Roleplay: state of the servers

Hello there! Im thinking about starting some roleplay to make the game more interesting than the last time I played (6 years ago). Kinda been looking into the lore for the various races/faction but i dont really know too much about the state or RP servers.

I read MG and WA are the best but looks like MG is full and WA is nearly so at the time of this posting.

Anybody can give me information about the other servers and how they are in terms of the population doing RP and so forth would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good new year people!

If you’re hoping for Horde rp, WrA is your best bet. There’s some on MG, but it’s very insular, not a lot of walk-up rp to be had.

Alliance rp is centered on MG and you can always find rp in Stormwind. There are plenty of guilds and communities that you can join for, honestly, pretty much anything you can think of in terms of rp. MG is where I’m based. If you can, I would definitely suggest making a toon here and dabbling a bit.

Whichever server you choose, it’s strongly recommended that you get an rp addon like TRP3 or CrossRP (i think it’s called that) so that you can see people’s rp profiles.

Good luck! And if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me in game!

There is in fact a Horde RP scene on MG, it is active. IT is less focused on random walk-up rp, so much as more on running stories and d20 events. We offer a wide variety of community events and content as well.

To better tap into the Ic RP Horde community, there recently was a new discord Pro-Horde community made to help the Horde network, rp, and promote rp. There is in fact a community D20 adventure going on tonight on MG Horde.

I’m not sure which faction i would do. I’d likely start with human though since well we all are lol. It would simply be easier to relate and write, I will check out both servers though and at least observe before I make any decisions, thanks for your help people.

Although I did still have my question about the other roleplay servers too incase both turn out to be filled. Or too laggy.

From what I’ve read (no personal experience), the other rp servers have low populations. I saw this thread Earthen Ring (RP server) so it looks like rp still exists on them, it just might be harder to find.

Also, if you decide to go with a lower population server, there’s nothing stopping you from joining various communities or discords that are centered on MG or WrA and still participating. It just means that you’ll have less potential walkup/casual rp.

As no one has mentioned it yet, I will just throw it out there that Emerald Dream is an option.

To be up front, ED has fewer roleplayers than either MG or WRA. However, we are still a fairly high pop realm, the factions are more balanced than either MG or WRA, and we do still have roleplay. It is more guild-focused than walk-up. There are a decent number of both Horde and Alliance roleplay guilds, and it’s not hard to get plugged in if you ask around in trade - someone will point you in the right direction.

I think at this point I have played on all the major RP servers going all the way back to vanilla. I am really picky when it comes to RP. Not because I am an RP snob but because I grew up playing D&D with great DM’s and I’ve worked in the table top RPG industry as well. I’ve played both Horde and Alliance and I can say that I love Emerald Dream more than anything.

I’ve been apart of multiple RP communities gaming over the years from one game to another. Their is something special about Emerald Dream that makes it shine over all the rest. I think for one it’s grounded, I’ve yet to see any sort of God moding, or people breaking lore to suit their own narrative. The people overall are pretty nice and friendly. I’ve found that even the non RP’ers have a respect and reverence for those that RP.

Try it, you might like it.

TinyurlDOTcom/wowsoa is the Soldiers of Azeroth discord. We are one of two discord servers that actually has a way to write stories in Discord also. I personally don’t care if you are new to RP or what server that you play on. If you have any kind of questions, come to the SOA discord, talk to us. Come join us on one of our weekly events. Don’t hesitate to ask us for help, that’s what we are there for. Their is also an RP guide that I wrote, pouring my years of experience from playing table top role playing games coupled with my professional experience as well.

Sounds like you missed out on ED during the main WSB era. I left ED because of the godmoding, lore breaking, and lack of respect to rpers.

Oh I hear you. Our guild was apart of an RP group on Moon Guard that was a collection of guilds. They called themselves the Grand Alliance. At the time in the game there was no truce. We went and did FOR THE ALLIANCE with less than half a raid. They needed all their guilds to even get a raid for Antorus. The way their leader talked to me after we did it he seemed happy about it. I even offered to take him next time along with some others.

Next time we all got together and I RP’d what our guild did we were tossed out. They claimed their was a truce with the Horde and at that time their definitely was not. Later I found out that they considered themselves rulers over the Alliance. I also recently found out that the Grand Alliance is one of the names in WoW lore for the Alliance.

I am right there with you as far as god moding and breaking lore. I found out an easy way to deal with it. Use ignore and don’t bother with them anymore. RP with those that make you happy. Surround yourself with those kind of people and enjoy the game.

Also ED has a new community discord called the Soldiers of Azeroth. It was made for everyone. I just wanted to do something nice and help people out. It’s a place where everyone is equal. TinyurlDOTcom/wowsoa is the Disc. Come hang out, you might like it. The people that seem attracted to it seem pretty down to earth. The people there are amazing. If you come hang out with us let us know if you need any help.

We’re doing weekly RP nights every Tuesday from 8 to 10e est. Next week we are having it at the World’s End Tavern in Stattrath. If you or anyone else off of ED is interested in showing up let me know. I’ll be running a raid in the group finder tool to help anchor people that want to come and RP with us.

Everyone is welcome to come join us. RP belongs to everyone.

Moon Guard Horde also has Coalition of the Horde, which also runs D20 server events. The project is for all those of Horde races, even characters / players with neutral leans, as MG Horde has a rather sizeable base of neutral characters, be it Argent Crusade, Earthen Ring, Cenarion Circle, or even just mercenary groups. They are -not- a neutral server project but uphold the current in-game armistice, and rather run events that deal with other forces outside of faction conflicts. Their moderator team consists of staunchly Horde as well as a couple of neutral individuals, as they believe that such alliances make the Horde stronger.

When I joined various Moon Guard Discord servers dedicated to roleplaying, I got pretty standard rules. Don’t harass people, don’t violate TOS, don’t post NSFW content. Easy to follow and understand and everything made perfect sense.

When I joined the big WRA roleplay Discord the ruleset was uh, interesting. Not sure if you’re familiar with the term “extremely online” or “terminally online” but it was like someone was carrying around arguments they had on Twitter around their head 24/7 a day. It’s not that the ruleset existed to maintain order in the community, it was that the ruleset existed as a way to label people as acceptable targets for harassment. Not very promising.

Based on that alone it’s really hard to recommend anything but Moon Guard, I haven’t really experienced people like that anywhere on the server. People are mostly chill and just want to roleplay, it’s not an extension of their Twitter beefs.

The server is a total mess. Hangout in the cathedral square enough and you’ll see it for yourself. MG is known for pornshire more than it is RP. Having played Horde on WRA I can tell ya that the same people that run those WRA servers that you love are playing ally on MG. They have their own servers too that are just as much of a disaster too.

Echoing what many others have said.

MG for Alliance, WrA for Horde. Both have diverse communities. My recommendation is to find a good guild and a group of friends and stick with them, avoiding random walk-up RP in cities, because that’s where the crazy people are. Server events are fine.

Going against the grain: Moon Guard Horde is still an exceptionally active community, it’s just smaller than WRA - and in my opinion, significantly less caustic than WRA. Look into The Coalition of The Horde, to start. The Moon Guard neutral events discord is also A+ for finding X-faction server events.

WRA is great for Horde walk-up RP, but I have my issues with the community there on the whole which I’d rather not air here.

I may have to check this out soon. Was thinking about making a new Horde toon but I also had some lackluster experiences on WrA last time I played there.

Moon Guard and WRA are where good role players go to die. They were the bomb back when Gamespy was still around. They did a report on how amazing MG was. I remembered it and decided to check it. It’s full of godmoders, lore breakers, egotistical narcissists, and sociopaths.

I how I wish that wasn’t so, but it is what it is. The people on MG play Horde on WRA. We’ve had an influx of people from both servers on Emerald Dream. They were tired of all of the above not to mention how prevelant the cybersex community was, and I’m not even talking about Pornshire there either.

I played for a very long time on MG. I played for a while on Horde side on WRA. It’s just the same song on a different day. These people also “RP” like the game is some chat room. As much as I love RP the drama queening got old fast. I can’t say I miss that one bit.

I fell in love with ED the moment I got there. There are a ton of RP’ers here. Horde is loaded, Alliance has some, and their is an RP group that’s started up. A community that focusses on RP PvP which believe it or not, is probably the healthiest form of RP. However if PvP is not your thing that’s ok too.

We had a gathering just last night, and we’ll be doing it weekly. Feel free to drop by the Soldiers of Azeroth Discord. If you’re interested in RP there is even an RP guide that I wrote. I have been playing D&D and other RPG’s ever since I was a little kid. I’ve done some writing professionally in the table top RPG scene. I wrote the guide for people that have never RP’d a day in their life. It’s intent was to help others.

If anyone wants to check it out, please feel free to do. I’m on often as my paladin here, so also please don’t hesitate to send me a tell. Whether you are on the Discord or in game, feel free to ask me anything you like, and I will help you out if you need it too.

“Good night and may the light forever keep you!”

Given the state of the lore, the game, and my own friend circles I don’t think most good RPers even play WoW anymore. I only just came back after years away to check out Dragonflight but am barely RPing anymore. The rest of my friends play FFXIV now and I was doing so but am on a break from it after the latest expansion was meh.

Man. You really hate MG and WrA lol

I literately have no idea what sort of ED you’re talking about. Did we poof a decade into the past? Even further? If so how did you do it cause I got scores to settle. If that new discord is doing good work, more power to you. But ED has been my home since 2009/2010, I’ve seen the best and the worst and ED has been on a very slow and long decline since 2016. I don’t even mean to sound doomerist about it - I’ve been one of the most vocal and active people trying to keep RP and ED alive and active despite the writing on the wall. Glad you’re having fun, but ED is not what ED was and MG/WrA have both retained their large and healthy communities.

There are definitely people leaving MG/WrA for ED though. I know because I’m one of them. I was a VeCo transplant to ED when most of the big RPPVP guilds on VeCo moved to ED during WotLK. Played there for many years until xferring to WrA after I felt the RP community had finally been run off of ED by all of the zerg guilds. I’ve played on both MG and WrA from WoD-late SL and finally just got tired of reading TRPs that were zombie hookers and overtly sexual furries. If having a smaller rp community on ED means I never again have to read a TRP profile that describes some vulperas “knot”, then so be it, ED until the day I die.
