Possible that the old server was merged or doesn’t exist anymore?

No realms in Retail have been merged or deleted.

Can you see any of your characters if you check the Item Restoration service? It can show all characters across all licenses (and game versions) under your Battle Net. Perhaps it can find your lost characters.
