I wish that the strangers cursing at me online would be a little more creative. Is that too much to ask?
I’d prefer them to say something like, “You arrogant skunk, get kicked by ducks!” so at least I could laugh before /ignoring them.

What is the ‘r’ word?
Freedom.
As much as I hate to admit it, this is spot on. Everyone would, in fact, be in an uproar if terms in this thread were different. Welcome to the age of selective outrage.
More like welcome to the age of thin-skins and virtue signaling.
I can’t argue that either.
I used to say this. As an insult, a playful jibe, an adjective to describe a particularly irritating rule or situation. It was part of my daily vocabulary, almost, something that had become rote by repetition.
Then I had a little girl with Down’s Syndrome come into my life. She’d never know what that word meant, not really, not enough to fully grasp it. She was one of the most genuinely caring people I have ever met.
I have since worked over a decade to scrub it from my vocabulary. Not for her. Not for anyone offended by the word. But for myself.
I don’t want to be the kind of person who uses that word derisively, flippantly, jokingly, or for any other reason other than stating a fact or using it in its much-less-popular definition, which is common in manufacturing. Because, to me, at least, that is equating a dumb thing or situation to a person with a mental handicap. And Emily was far from dumb.
The dude shouldn’t have to see that word if he doesn’t want to. I hope he can find an add-on for it. That it isn’t already filtered is a bit ridiculous.
There are a lot of people in this thread defending something that nobody is trying to take away. He outright states that he only wants to filter it as with other offensive language.
And yet I’d bet cold hard cash that some of these fools want to ban WTS posts from LFG, or carry ads from /2.
GG, GD.
If you had read his post you would see that his intention is not to change peoples behaviour, rather he wants to censor the word for people who have the bad language filter on.
I agree with him and don’t see why anyone wouldn’t.
I’m also noticing a lot of people throwing tantrums and ironically calling the op a crybaby because he doesn’t wan’t to deal with their crap.
OP, I recommend the add-on Listener. Enter the slurs you don’t want to see into the notify field. The client will beep at you, flash, and highlight the offending word green.
Report it every time. Eventually people will start eating silences for their bad behavior.
Wanna combine our Chaos Bolts together to bring down anyone who uses any disability or mental health as an insult?
I have demonbolts, but sure.
Both hit hard
Raid shadow legends?
There’s a language filter? I must have turned that off ages ago.
Be nice if the WoW community just … wasn’t a cesspit for this sort of crap, but I’ve been on the boat long enough to know better. … And to know that it isn’t just WoW. ![]()
Best you can really do is report and move on - it’s a real shame you have to deal with these sorts of people, especially while pugging, but there’s nothing much that can be done with it. It’d take a gigantic and very expensive team to properly moderate this sort of behavior.
As gatekeepy as it sounds, the best solution to this sort of thing is to find a decent, accepting community, or a few friends, and stick to them like glue. You can’t really prevent the ugly side of the community from coming out, but you can at the very least insulate yourself from it - if you need to.
Doesn’t this also apply to people who start slinging the hard “R” the moment the slightest thing goes wrong in their dumb, fantasy videogame? :v
I find this difficult to believe for many individuals…
Why hasn’t Blizzard added the ability to make your own filter list? I would have thought that preferable to having an addon parse all chat.
OP, whatever you do. Don’t join the pvp forums, if you don’t want to see toxic behavior.
…Okay
An odd premise to start us off with.
Grab a chat filter addon.
Or tell your daughter to just ignore them cause these people that’s trying to rile her up.
Personally, it just seems particularly lazy to use a mental disability as an insult, and you shouldn’t pay it any mind, they don’t deserve it doing it that way. You pay it no attention and the word loses bite, cause it’s just a silly word.
Offense is taken, not given.
Exactly.
You ignore it.
Fair enough, though i would still recommend her to just ignore those words.
Edit: Before anybody inevitably accuses me, i’m in support of this idea cause to his credit, the mature language filter is optional. The silly words on the internet doesn’t bother me much, but i know not everybody is like me. That said, being support of this idea and simultaneously suggesting to ignore those silly words aren’t mutually exclusive.
Edit 2: Also, yes, i know people like to type around the chat filters, L i k e t h i s, or Ťĥīş. You can blacklist those in your chat filter addon, but it is easier option to simply ignore it, since you can have the excuse of just them speaking nonsense to you. At least, that’s what i would do if i were in your shoes.
Put yourself in a bubble and shield yourself from all the negatives society throw at you. Even the ones that don’t physically harm you. I get it, we all have emotions… I’m living though an extremely tough time right now having lost my cat of 15 years so I know how it’s hard to just get rid of these emotions. I’ve gone through life being bullied and belittled for all sorts of things. If there is one thing that I have learned through all this it’s that emotions are just that. Nothing more, nothing less. They can’t kill you or physically harm you unless you let them dictate your life. We need to learn how to absorb the emotions we feel when we see something negative. Not create legislature to help grow a bubble that shields us from seeing such things. Ying and Yang is something we should all learn about. We need balance. Absorb the emotions to counter balance… Center your chi…
