No truer words have ever been… typed.
What helps is that we work in the tech industry. So, our customers are people who are generally intelligent enough not to care about expletives. Soccer moms aren’t exactly our market. lol
I’m not sure. And there’s no way to know for sure either, since discussing these things is against the TOS. But if it’s basic swear words that don’t involve homophobia, sexism, racism or threats, I believe it should just be a case of mute and move on.
Companies do. And why wouldn’t you? Limiting what people can talk about eliminates distractions from productivity. And in this context eliminates people from feeling alienated and leaving. More money In theory
This isnt a secret
“Blizz is censoring us because capitalism!” is definitely a new one, I’ll give you that.
I wasn’t referring to the context of us and I edited my post to speak about us
I feel you are conflating different things. Am I offended by naughty words? Absolutely not. I could probably make a grown man blush with the way I talk. HOWEVER, I also understand that Blizzard (or any business) is within their right to remove me from their premises if I speak, or act, in a manner they find disruptive. It’s not about me being offended, it’s about recognizing people’s right to have their own rules in their own home.
That puts the onus of responsibility on the person not breaking the rules, though.
I’d rather people learn how to behave in public than keep having to mute some teenager practicing his new gamer words in Trade chat.
I’ve thought about that. If I could make a wish, and cause every stupid person on earth to not be stupid anymore, would I?
I came to the conclusion that no, I would not. Even though it would greatly benefit our species.
Why? I enjoy watching it too much.
I don’t talk down to my friends, we give eachother censored word though. Try that in a reasonable way in WoW and you’re banned, people are so fragile these days. Imagine reporting over words, sure if they’re threatening to end your life but insults or general trash talk like there is in sports?
Kinda pathetic.
Sometimes you just wanna watch the world burn.
I think, for me at least, there is stupid and then there is STUPID. Like dumb is funny and that is cool and all, but dumb can also be dangerous and that’s where I draw the line.
Can’t we fall somewhere between?
I do think both sides have points. To completely discredit one side is silly. At a certain point you do just need to toughen up and move on, When the violation in context is small or Inconsequential.
Obviously blzzard can do what they want… but can we all admit offense is wildly subjective…you cant please all sensibilities.
You’re capable of forming sentences so I feel like you might be capable of wrapping your mind around the concept of private vs public if you try really hard. Here, I’ll help: if your foul-mouthed friends and you want to be in a guild or a group and chat how you like, you can do that as much as your little hearts please.
Do it in Trade chat? That’s the equivalent of yelling profanity in a shopping mall. Less kosher.
If you are getting banned over what you said privately to your friends… I hate to break it to you, but it’s your friends that reported you.
Yeah, bro, that’s it.
We can’t handle the mad truths you’re handing out.
Yeah, that must be it.
I don’t have that spell. I must be in the wrong spec.
This IS falling between. Blizzard doesn’t auto-block profanity from being typed (which we know they have the technology to do) so that you can speak in private company however you like as long as all parties involved are willing.
But do it in public and you run the chance of being reported for being disruptive.
I see nothing wrong with this.
The key here is the mixed company. In public channels you’ve got everybody from kids with single-digit ages up to people north of 50. In private spaces where you’re familiar with everybody involved and you know is comfortable with your preferred manner of speech, go for it. In mixed company however don’t expect a warm reception.
Here is my opinion: I think it is a silly rule, I don’t think there is anything wrong with generically used spicy words (ie not directed at someone, ie go you-lnow-what yourself), that said… it is what it is so I am going to abide the rule and point out it is, in fact, a rule… regardless of my personal opinion on the matter.
Trade chat gets controversial and then eventually trash talking begins, I don’t use curse words when I’m talking trash but if their friends decide they don’t like it or losing an argument. They report spam to achieve their version of victory.
Well, a smart person would stay out of that. Controversy and “trash talking” has nothing to do with Trade. I don’t feel sorry for anyone getting banned for being stupid in public and never will.
