Replacing Onyx Annulet (BM)

Preface: I’m a scrub.

I am new to running sims and have been reading guides on gearing. Most guides say that the [Onyx Annulet] from Forbidden Reach will be replaced quickly… but I am having a problem with that.

I am currently wearing my second ring as [Loop of Pulsing Veins] (haste/mast) and have simmed all the other non-versatility rings I have picked up at ilvl437 and the [Onyx Annulet] always beats them… by quite a lot when simming on Raidbots.

What am I doing wrong? Should I or should I not be replacing the Forbidden Reach ring?

PS. My Onyx Annulet ring says ilvl424 in-game but on my armory profile it says 443. I also don’t quite understand this if anyone can enlighten me please. Bug? Could this be the issue with simming?

I’m still wearing mine too for the same reason.

its still BiS for a lot of classes tbh. Like 10-15% of most classes damage.

I’m still wearing mine on both of my bm hunters. It’s going to be BiS for some classes/specs probably until next season… Or until they nerf it.

I was in same boat. I read all those guides and asked questions on the forums too. Wowhead said it would be replaced quickly, but I think those were written before Blizzard boosted the ring. If you’re siming higher than listen to that data. Guides are just there to help point you in the right direction. Ultimately you know your character better and know if you are making the right decisions.

The 443 item level is a known bug. Not sure why they haven’t fixed it yet. Rather than use “Load from Armory” on Raidbots, use the Simc addon. It will give better sims.

BM is highly reliant on secondary stats, which is why the Annulet was barely BiS when it was relevant.

I’m not sure why your sims are showing different, but I replaced the Annulet with a 428 ring in the first few days of 10.1. Sims showed it being about a 200 dps increase.

Thanks. Yes, I am using the /simc addon to get the string to paste in Raidbots. Still getting used to simming and I think I am just scratching the surface of all what it can do.

As I have couple extra 437 rings (mas/has, crit/mas), I might just work on dummies and see if I notice any difference.

Thanks all for the replies.

I ditched mine a while ago. The damage may be good but we need secondary stats and rings have a big budget for that.

Oh they certainly do say that!!! I likely wont be replacing mine for a while. Dont fret, youre not doing anything wrong.

I run sims, for a base idea. The rest (imo) is up to me. Under 700ish dps increase, i weigh the two items together and then decide.
That ring is absolutely insane for BM.

Also if you check my toon, i s4ill have raz 418 heroic bow. (Super lucky!!! Got it from the first heroic reward for mythics in S1 (like December i think))

On that note, i simmed all the range weapons that drop in aberrus and none compare, or replace mine unless theybare arpund 437 (and then the increase varies basednkn which weapon, due to stats.) I love me crit and mastery.

I am saving my shadowflame crafting pieces (1 half each week) to make myself the crafted dragonhunter bow (at 437 with mast/crit) my sims have that bow finally overtake the raz bow. However, only when it nears 437 is it even worth it.

I have crafted: shoulder/belt (haste set)
Wrists, (wjth a prison pocket because no mast/crit bracers dropped in season 1 mythics) ring, (because i like the teleport effect) and had a neck (not lariat, the haste set bonus is 2 embellishments l. And imo its better, more haste is faster barb shots. Which in turn can synergize well wkth procs if specced) replaced the neck withnhigher ilvl which works, needed to free up 1 of the 5 slots for crafting for.bow at end of the month.)

Shoulder
Belt
Bravers
Ring
Bow in another 1 week.

Sorry for wall of text! Hope it helps.

Hunters for the win!

For gear comparison, i go to raidsims? (Dont thjnk its mrrobot anymore) and use gear compare. Can tell it what new item to compare with, and customize it. (Stats, sockets, embellishments, enchants) 5hats how i know if the shiny is really a shiny :grinning:

According to Raidbots, my 437 Loop of Vitriolic Intent w/ socket, after being enchanted and gem’ed, outperformed my Onyx Annulet @ 424 using Desirous, Prophetic, and Storm stones in a single target scenario by 300dps. Obviously considering the 3 target proc from Storm, it is probably still behind a bit in multitarget fights. I dont see how it wouldn’t be an auto replace with any best-stat ring @ 441 or higher for any scenario.

This is all according to Raidbots and pertains to my MM hunter, who is sitting at 438 w/ unbuffed 36% crit, 27% haste and 18% mastery.

Problem is you can replace that storm with ice and gain 2k dps…

I’m not raiding Mythic and I have terrible luck with rings, I’ve made peace with the fact that I’m going to wear onyx forever. It is just as bad as we all told blizzard it would be when they first implemented it. At least the grind is tolerable.

I want to make a second one so I don’t have to go back to the island for aoe.

Edit: another thing worth mentioning is that stats only work when you use them well. Passive damage procs happen on their own - playing well not required. So if the passive damage proc outperforms on the sim, it is going to wreck it in real world scenarios, where your attention will be divided with mechanics.

Sims will tell you to replace it as soon as your haste and/or crit reach a certain %, because they will outweigh the value of the annulet procs. Try replacing some of your mastery pieces. Took a while to replace it myself.

So yesterday (Tuesday reset), I got my 4 piece and got my ilvl up to 436 with only Onyx Annulet being at 424.

When simming my [Deeprock Loop] (haste/crit), it now beats it by about +300.

When playing with target dummies (multi-target), maybe it was RNG, but after five 2min bursts, I was always higher with the [Onyx Annulet] by a few thousand dps. Could also be my non perfect rotation.

interesting, last time i simmed it it was simming better than a 337 haste crit ring

I’d imagine it depends a lot on the rest of your gear, as well. With an overall higher iLvl, you start benefiting less from static damage procs and more from stats that increase all of your damage.

Reevaluating my own sims, the annulet is now competitive with 424s with good stats. When my overall iLvl was closer to 420 it beat the crap out of 437s.

yeah it was quite a while ago im sitting at 437 now but will be replacing tier next week, ill have to sim again

So I just read this Blue Post in the general forums. (Hint, it doesn’t sound like good news for us.)

Looking forward to checks notes, replacing an old ring from last season being nerfed for less DPS for a newer, fully upgraded ring from the current season.

I’m assuming you mean a 437 ring, because it would be something if it was worse than a 337 ring.

Seriously though, it depends entirely on your stat distribution. When I was looking to replace mine, it simmed higher than a crit/haste ring as well. That was because my Crit was already at 34% and my Haste was at 31%. When I simmed a Crit/Mastery ring, I gained nearly 1.2k in DPS.

The synergies of BM make secondary stats highly impactful. The Annulet lacking secondary stats might sim well, but they also make the spec feel bad to play.

You aren’t comparing it to fully upgraded rings. A 441 with socket is a considerable upgrade over it.
