The issue with comparing the two is that the pandaren were intended to be neutral off the bat, whereas the blood elves were meant to be a Horde main stay. The fact the Alliance got the Thalassian elf model at all is going against the original intent, should not have happened, and quite frankly, nightborne shouldn’t have been model swapped either. Faction identity should have been maintained.
High elves should not happen. Void elves shouldn’t have happened.
There have been plenty of Alliance high elf NPCs across Azeroth since BC. Even if the spotlight is on blood elves (and rightfully so), high elves have a long history with the Alliance.
Yeah and Alliance shouldn’t have gotten spacegoats and Night elves and Humans shouldn’t have looked like caricatures. A lot of things shouldn’t have happened, but here we are.
At this point the devs should tell these whiney tantrum throwers to shove their demands somewhere the sun don’t shine and then cease to acknowledge their existence. It really has gotten ridiculous.
I get that, but that is not “damage”, that is a legitimate statement and if anything suggests High Elves weren’t something we would be expecting any time soon.
Blood Elves were legitimately the greater majority of High Elves, they are essentially one in the same.
To be fair that statement was if I recall correctly a bit of tongue-in-cheek. Yet if people really did want High Elves that bad, they did realistically have the option for it, the exact same option the High Elves made in lore.
This is basically the same situation as the Nightborne I think, although personally I don’t think this really counts in anyway towards a High Elf argument.
Both of these races just missed the mark, Nightborne because it was nothing like the NPC race, and Void Elves because they went for an expression of uniqueness instead of similarity with a main protagonist.
The Void Elves one though I feel was at least addressed in lore and had a reasonable causation as their forced void manipulation was not the same way in which Alleria mastered her void powers (which was also over a much greater period of time)
Again though I don’t think that can be taken personally, they simply missed the mark. It wasn’t a deliberate slight, Entropic Embrace for example they wanted to be visually impactful, with armour a change of skin tone wouldn’t necessarily be impactful or noticeable at all.
So are Ogres, Murlocs, Vyrkul, Tuskarr and many other races. That doesn’t mean anyone deserves or should expect them.
The fact that they are even consenting to try and make some amends should be something people are grateful for not offended by.
None of these feel like slights to me, nor Blizzard “throwing the first punch”. As I said before, I feel that this injustice is mostly perceived and then manifested through those who feel slighted.
To somewhat summarise things (and feel free to correct me if I miss something or make a mistake) - Players have wanted High Elves for awhile
Blizzard acknowledged and said “unfortunately they aren’t unique enough” ie High Elves predominantly became Blood Elves and are available in game already as a playable race
Alleria returned as the first major “High Elf” character we have seen in a long time
Void Elves are released, but players are upset that they are a) not High Elves and b) don’t live upto the expectation set by Alleria
Umbrage breaks out across the community and spills into the forums
New skin tones and hair customisations are released for Void Elves to appease the community
Players still aren’t happy
Void Elves randomly get given Dark Ranger customisation (which obviously doesn’t address any concerns)
Let’s talk real for a moment. High Elves will never be released as a stand-alone race for the Alliance. Either they will get them through the subrace system or through glyphs. Alliance-players are, after all, a second class player faction which is build upon compromises through and through the past years.
Either way, the “damage” is done with the Void Elves and Blizzard’s constant going back to revisit the original concept. I have no doubt they will get more Void-options but giving how they prioritized straight up the High Elf options is absolutely telling.
The Nightborne had similar issues but they are not the same. But the male model is not a copypaste, it’s an edited and more slender looking Night Elf model to reflect on their life in their safety bubble. What NB lacked were customizations which got covered to a better deal now and the third or fourth revision of the heritage armor belt, I honestly lost count on how often they had to adjust it.
And this is exactly what people didn’t want to experience. A low-effort race which isn’t nearly identical to the poster child. Imagine the playable Zandalari Trolls not standing upright but having the same back as the Darkspear Trolls, with the reasoning, that a Loa cursed them. It would be basically an insult if such a thing went through but luckily though we are the blessed faction, so we never to need to worry about such things. Our characters lack customization but they aren’t deformed or compromise races.
I agree with you here. The whole Void Elf-race is a miss and should have been introduced later into the game’s life cycle with an actual void expansion, where they do matter.
It’s almost spot on, until the end.
I think that the Void Elf players are/were initially happy but several persons out there love to instigate provocative situations on both sides. Remarks like “Quel’thalas belongs to the Alliance” and “you are not a real High Elf” basically cemented the people’s immaturity and pettiness to a new level of cringe.
I still believe this is a payback from the developers for all the people who cannot give the topic a rest. It makes no sense to give the Alliance these options but perhaps they simply want to say one simple thing with this: The Alliance has High and Blood Elves and that’s why they can also be Dark Rangers.
Void Elves are Blood Elves, and Blood Elves are High Elves…
or in otherwords: Void Elves are High Elves.
There is zero physical difference between a High Elf and a Blood/Void Elf, especially since the only thing that made them different, High Elves having blue eyes, is a customization choice players can choose these days.
Just merge Void Elves and Blood Elves already. Make the race Pandaren neutral. I think we’re at the point where Lor’themar can admit he jumped the gun on banishing Umbric and his followers for studying the void, and can acknowledge that having some void experts around to protect Quel’Thalas would be a good thing, so long as they’re kept away from the Sunwell.
Actually Void Elves were prior-Blood Elves that were investigating the void.
So really your argument should be ‘Void Elves are Blood Elves, and Blood Elves are High Elves’ – However, unlike the Blood Elves - Void Elves don’t have a different name from political purposes - They were altered biologically & cosmically, they are for all intents and purposes a different race. Much like the Nightborne are to Nightelves.
Blood Elves are High Elves. Their namesake has NOTHING to do with the fel or their eyes.
They’re simply dubbed ‘Blood Elves’ to honour their fallen people against Arthas. Every ‘High Elf Aesthetic’ added to the game will be given to the Blood Elves, because in actuality it’s a Blood Elf Aesthetic. It’s like comparing H2O to water.
There’s absolutely no difference physically, culturally or biologically between High Elves and Blood Elves whatsoever - they’re one and the same.
"In honor of the blood that was shed throughout this kingdom, in honor of the sacrifices of our brothers and sisters, our parents, and our children, in honor of Anasterian… as of this day we will take the name of our royal lineage! As of this day, we are sin’dorei! For Quel’Thalas!” - Kael’Thas Sunstrider
We know the Nightborne are a different race to the Night Elves, and there is lore sources to back them up being as a different race.
Void Elves how ever, there is no lore sources to back up to claim them as a new race. Transformation can take place with any of the races, doesn’t exactly mean they’re a new race. Void Elves are pretty much High Elves, just infused with the Void. Still the same race.
