If they want to introduce Spellbreakers as a class I won’t complain (except for it probably being another elf restricted class)
If its got a void spec, Darkspear Shadow Hunters would make a lot of sense.
Even discounting the probable elf-only restriction, I feel like death were knights already serve as the mage killer class. “Mages fear our kind, with reason,” to quote the unholy trainer in Acherus.
Hearthstone incidentally realized the Spellbreaker fantasy through warriors when it themed each class around blood elf/Scourge lore; I’d rather that carry over into WoW.
I feel like it’s a big deal in the reflection that the Horde have a lot of leadership or renowned heroes removed from the playing field — Either by being corrupted, banished or simply killed off in some form or another
Slaughtering Halduron to flip a coin on to the treasury of “Whoa this is a big threat!” seems kind of wasteful and yet another renowned Horde character sacrificed in their mass grave
I’d LOVE for Rommath to school Jaina.
Finally give Blood Elves or Nightborne some oomph on the Horde — It’s rather shameful we have both and neither were able to match or hold a candle to Jaina in BFA
People try trade off the Alliance holding most the cosmic power scales with “Well the Horde have the arcane, obviously!” — but as evidently seen, that’s a load of fly-ridden dung-infested crap - as Jaina & hUmAn PoTeNTiAL triumphs all over the elves pathetic excuses of magi with ease.
Spellbreakers have also appeared in Suramar. They would be unique on the WoW spectrum of playable classes in that they are a gish/spellblade. Shamans are conceptually similar—a comparison at a glance might look something like warrior/ascetic/elements vs. warrior/sybarite/arcane. Death Knights are not comparable at all in theme. They’re necromantic juggernauts who basically exist to serve the role of inverted Paladin.
Ultimately, I don’t really subscribe to the notion that Anti-Magic Shell would discount there being room for Spellbreaker any more than I would Purge or Grounding Totem.
I’d love to see some kind of arcane melee class.
Anasterian during the 3rd war went out to fight Arthas in melee while also casting spells. Sword in 1 hand, staff in the other while wearing armor. He wasn’t a Spellbreaker, but he also definitely wasn’t just a mage.
Making something out of that with Spellbreaker as the tank spec would work really well. We saw a variety of Spellblades from the Silver Covenant and Nightborne that could be a DPS spec.
I’d just really like any new arcane using class. Having just mage that does a single role feels so limiting.
No, he isn’t. Alleria never wanted the job and was missing until Legion, and she’s firmly on a different path now as Space-Ranger-In-Chief. Vereesa left Silvermoon before the Third War, and more recently moved away from Dalaran, casting doubt on whether she’s even still involved with the Silver Covenant. Neither of them were in Quel’Thalas when the Scourge came. Neither of them helped defend the city. Neither of them helped rally survivors after Sylvanas died. Neither of them know what it is to be Sin’dorei. Lor’themar proved his worth during that crisis, rallying the survivors and keeping some sense of order until Kael’thas arrived, and Halduron was at his side the entire time, proving his worth by saving Lor’themar’s life and acting as his second-in-command while Kael’thas figured out what to do next. Halduron has been Ranger-General of Silvermoon for more than twenty years now. It’s his seat.
Yes, which was scrapped entirely because it was a terrible idea and made no sense for his character. Rommath is loyal to Quel’Thalas above all else. He had his chance to betray everyone by joining Kael’thas in Burning Crusade and didn’t.
Those are all terrible ideas and would make for a terrible expansion.
He used a bow a few times on the Isle of Thunder, including a moment where he comments that he’s still got good aim. He used to have a click line about being able to best Nathanos at archery.
No matter how you want to slice it, he’s not in someone else’s seat.
It’s his seat, by right of both ascension & followship.
‘Ranger-General of Quel’Thalas’ — Not 'Windrunner-General of Quel’Thalas’
Origin of the Ranger-General of Quel’Thalas Title: Roughly five hundred years ago, a group of similarly dedicated fighters formed and officially took on the name “Farstriders”. Their mandate was to protect Quel’Thalas far beyond its actual borders and look after high elf interests all over Azeroth. The commander of the Farstriders was given a unique title: Ranger-general of Silvermoon / Quel’Thalas.
The title itself predates the formal establishment of the Farstriders, and the only reason it was passed down the Windrunner line in the first place, was because it was first given to a legendary ranger named Talanas Windrunner; who eventually passed it down his descendants – who were dedicated to follow in his footsteps …
Following the death of Sylvanas, the Farstriders themselves had elected Halduron Brightwing as their new ranger-general; especially in regard to his deeds & heroism in the war against Arthas and the Scourge — So no matter how you want to justify or paint it, Halduron holds more right to the seat than Alleria or Vereesa currently do; in correlation to what the title both represents & holds merit towards.
I think the implied conceit here is that because of how Blizzard writes stories and develops characters, he’s in someone else’s seat.
Just me hoping Spellbreakers or something ‘spellblade adjacent’ will be the ‘new class’ announcement for Midnight. Like you mentioned they even appeared in Suramar now. Since the idea of Blood Elves and Nightborne merging has been floated, like a Spellblade class seems like thematically a nice symbolic representation of that. Like the Farstrider aspect of Lor’themar meets the Mage aspect of Thalyssra.
I’d still take Necromancers (Lich especially) in a heartbeat over anything else, but I wouldn’t be sad by any means if Spellbreakers were announced. I just hope they have the forethought to bake in access for non-elves.
As an aside, Alleria’s decision to disinherit herself as ranger-general is a pretty major part of her backstory. That she chose the Alliance over Quel’Thalas was acknowledged in the text, both by her critics and herself. Alleria Windrunner [Ranger-General of Silvermoon] would be a pretty major betrayal of her character.
The blood elves electing the leader of the blood elf hate group their ranger-general, on the other hand, would only be a rather hilarious and inexplicable betrayal of themselves.
That she chose the Alliance over Quel’Thalas was acknowledged in the text, both by her critics and herself.
Its less that she chose the Alliance over Quel’thalas and more that she didn’t want to have to listen to her mother for her entire life. The Alliance wasn’t even a thing when she first left I’m pretty sure. After the war came to Quel’thalas it was less the Alliance versus QT and more that she chose vengeance against the Horde and ensuring they couldn’t do more harm to the world over turtling in Quel’thalas forever.
I am gripped with dread at how bad The Windrunner cavalry moment is going to be.
If you’re really sressedout that way, and not just making hyperbole for effect, you should probably quit the game.
While it be neat, I do not know if they are going to put any class stuff out before TLT earliest. I think player housing is the big box feature, perhaps along with a huge character creation update for all the Thalassian elves (and who knows, perhaps the mystical troll beard).
No, he isn’t.
But, he is. Vereesa is literally, ‘Ranger-General of the Silver Covenant.’ She’s already a Ranger-General. It was a hereditary title (one of the dumbest lore tidbits ever, but here we are).
Yes, which was scrapped entirely because it was a terrible idea and made no sense for his character. Rommath is loyal to Quel’Thalas above all else. He had his chance to betray everyone by joining Kael’thas in Burning Crusade and didn’t.
We don’t know why it was scrapped. Blizzard never commented on the why. All we know is that it existed, but was never implemented. Point is, they considered Rommath to be a traitor enough to go so far as to record voice lines for it.
Those are all terrible ideas and would make for a terrible expansion.
You do know which game company’s forums you’re posting in right now, right? Terrible ideas and terrible expansions is what Blizzard DOES. Heck, just the fact that, ‘Uniting the Elven Tribes,’ was a narrative element significant enough they brought it up at Midnight’s reveal, is rather telling that they don’t shy away from terrible ideas.
But, he is. Vereesa is literally, ‘Ranger-General of the Silver Covenant.’ She’s already a Ranger-General.
Of an organization that has had nothing to do with Quel’thalas for years.
Of an organization
Nope.
Its an inherited title. Calling her the, ‘Ranger-General of the Silver Covenant,’ would be no different than calling her the, ‘Lady of the Silver Covenant,’ or, ‘Matron of the Silver Covenant,’ etc…
Its stupid lore, but just because the lore is dumb doesn’t mean it’s not canon.
Funny because every bit of lore around it says it’s a FORMERLY inherited title. Which likely means Halduron does not have to give up being ranger general of Silvermoon.
When Sylvanas died at the hands of Arthas, the Farstriders elected Halduron as their new Ranger General. And I doubt they would just hand it over to Vareesa just because she’s a Windrunner.
