Question, why isn't maintenance done in the overnight hours?

we’re in after hours. most people are at work. servers are less busy now than they would be at 9pm, or 1am est.

Depends on the depth of the task. Simple updates yeah could probably be done overnight. But it’s a global game there’s always players that’ll be impacted.

But if it’s more major work overnight might not be an option. See the other thing with us players bickering over maintenance we don’t know what the maintenance work entails.

I think people go right to picturing someone just clicking and update button and that’s all it is.

Sometimes it likely is but not always.

Also working for a hospital in IT we’ve done day shift updates plenty of times . As it is just needed that much you can’t wait.

So because they are too lazy and tight with their money, Except when it comes to Exec bonuses or pay, we have to put up with terrible business practices.

Look id understand if night maintenence was not a common thing but it is and most companies that are global do it according to either their HQ or largest consumer base which in both cases would be the US.

Every shipping business has a night crew, every warehouse has a night crew, most IT jobs have night crews.

And this is a job that can be done remote if they invested the buttloads of money they like to tapk about back into making work from home offices it could create an even better workflow

because this means they have to pay for night workers. And who wants to work at night? No body lol.

After hours is a known concept even for games. And if it isn’t happening, you roll back and try some other time; you don’t just keep extending the completion time.

Whose night? There are 38 time zones in the world.

I take it you’ve actually never interacted or been with people who work nights. Theres plenty of people that either make it work or it actually works better with their daily schedule

Probably the place where HQ is or bigger economic pull is. Most cases being the US.

Ok then why was it darn near impossible to find folks for overnight shifts in the food industry I worked at?

I know it was the food industry. But, it does feel like most folks would rather work mornings in any given business. I loved working nights. I just got sick of being the only one doing it.

working weekends is another biggy. Alot of folks don’t want to work weekends. Heck alot of people now just don’t want to work. Specially if you can get that tik tok money for less effort.

The entire reason maintenance is done when it is because there are in truth very few of you playing in that window.

3am PDT is 8pm AEST. Oceanic Peak Traffic. Why bring servers down during peak times for Oceanic players?

I keep telling people that. The US is NOT the center of the world regardless of what arrogant people want to believe and wish was true. I live here and the US is well behind the developed world in a lot of ways. But that’s beside the point.

Nobody should have preferential treatment. The maintenance schedule is based on when there are the fewest number of players region wide. Without consideration to where they are. Pure numbers.

I work as a DBA and System Admin. Downtime and how to handle it is something I am familar with. My objective was to minimize impact to a 24/7 business. Things have to go down and “someone” is getting impacted and thus a reason to cry about it.

I also am a human with a life. I couldve pushed back more than I ever did because even if I was doing late night 3AM work, I was still expected to be in the office for my “official” 8-5 shift.

Blizz is a billion dollar organization with resources I can scarcely fathom. I was a 1 man show. It isnt a good argument that the poor humans “need” to do work during daylight hours. No doubt they base the time(s) that is most cost effective for the business, their IT partners, and the projected downtime and the impacts to players as a whole (not to mention the need/urgency). At this point, the mere knowledge that maintenance is at/around these hours for the last 20 years may be just a given and no other real logic put into it.

Because you do have to pay more because at a food service youre dealing with alot more drunk and druggies.

Oh I know its so awful having to make the multi billion dollar business pay night workers a little bit extra but i promise you cut down the Execs bonus by 1 percent and you have a team payment package ready to go.

timezones probably. it’s 3am somewhere when they do the maintenance!

Wrong. And they already do it at 7AM so at least they know what after hours is. What’s being stated is it should be more after hours than 7AM … like say, 3AM. Furthermore, they should not just keep adding more time to when they’ll be done. If it was supposed to be over at 9 or whenever, and it doesn’t work, then you roll back and do it some other day. You don’t just push it back and back and back and back … on and on.

Nope. They are running their business responsibly. They are doing the work, when their team is scheduled during normal working hours.

This game is not like or similar to other random businesses. What times do other MMO’s both current and historically do their maintenance? Its generally a weekday, during business hours.

This is not s shipping business or warehouse or an IT department. While there may be some minor similarities, even IT jobs run a skeleton crew overnight, to just be present to work on small jobs, and make sure nothing completely breaks.

This feels more of a personal thing for you. Creating a narrative to justify your feelings.

People have lives and families such as you OP. Do your job at night lol

Can someone explain the solar system and time zones to OP? Cheers.
