I see many folk bemoaning the timing of planned maintenance.
I’ve always wondered why they don’t do maintenance at 3am? It would likely cause less upset players.
Every company I’ve worked for, any maintenance that is going to take a service offline is always done outside of business hours, normally in the wee hours of the mornings.

Yeah I know my internet company does it at night
Netflix does it at night
Most companies do it when the least amount of people will notice, like at night when most people are sleeping

Because 3AM for you is the start of prime time in Australia. Sorry but this is a world wide game. The US is not the center of the world. They do it at the time that impacts the fewest number of people in the entire region.

Nobody wants to be working at 3am dude… and in reality, 3am for who? This game is LADEN with people around the clock man.

So, stagger the maintenance by region.

I wish they would do it at different times. At least once. So many of us can only play in the mornings and that is always the maintenance time. Can’t you screw up someone else’s time even once so the rest of us can not be the ones affected literally every single time?

It’s part of the gig for most sysadmins, dude.

This. I’m an American, but we live in Japan for the moment, and maintenance usually takes place between 1-2am here.

They do. Europe is a different region and has different maintenance times.
This region includes the US, Canada, central/south America, Australia, and New Zealand. It’s all one region. Everything is interconnected. It has to all go down at once.

Yeah but this argument doesn’t hold water unless you’re going to try and pretend the AUS market is significantly bigger than the US market.

Lets go over GDP and disposable incomes across the world. Might see why companies cater a little to much to the americans xD

To be fair… we are.
But we aren’t the only WoW players. I think the maintenance schedule is based on when the devs wake up and get to work, not when it’s convenient for the players.

There are more people from Australia playing the game during nighttime in the US, than there are people from the US playing at 7am pacific.

One thing to note, importantly… is that maintenance is done on a Tuesday… early… when the majority of the world is at work or school. Does this make sense now?

So, you have a system diagram of Blizzard’s infrastructure? It would be easy to cron jobs to run at specific times on each server and have an admin check progress and QA the patches.
Your right, If they did it to impact the least amount of people in the region then why would they do it at 9-11am CST? That makes zero sense at all. American’s and Canadians make the the majority in NA. And not everyone works from 9-5. Infact more people dont then do. So its impacting my time. But im use to it. 20 years of it made me realize they will never change the time.
I doubt this for the simple fact the Ocenaic Realms have like 10 options or something. The US realm list alone takes actual scrolling to get through. There is also a reason why both the Ocenaic and Latin realms got merged into the US region for LFG instead of staying local to their own. On their own, they just lack the populace to sustain a healthy game environment.

Yea, let’s solve this today… once and for all. That way… 10 different armchair sysadmins won’t have to post this next Tuesday like clockwork…
Well considering Blizzard (and Microsoft for that matter) are located on the west coast of the United States then yeah, it is the capital of the world. Now, if there was a company in Japan or China I imagine they would want to do their maintenance at the dead of night in there time zone.
