PvE gearing is Superior to PvP gearing

Title. This isn’t about vendors, or seperate itemization for PvP and PvE gear. I get it. Blizzard wants all gear to be good throughout all forms of content (ignoring itemization differences). We won’t be getting resilience or PvP power back either.

But why is PvP gearing inferior to PvE gearing? I’ve recently been doing some PvE again, after nearly 10 years (Ulduar!) because I needed the essence from Mechagon. Gear drops like candy in PvE. People I group with are barely able to play their class in a scripted setting yet they’re pushing 430 item level… meanwhile, players that choose to gear through PvP (again, ignore the vendor issue for a moment) are left behind. We’re left behind in terms of itemization options, we’re left behind when it comes to rate of progress.

Why?

Many people in the PvP community have a sneaking suspicion that it’s about trying to avoid a situation where PvE players feel forced to PvP for a gear advantage. The problem with that, though, is that PvPers are forced to PvE for gear instead. Why can’t gearing through both avenues be roughly equal? Again, this isn’t even about RNG, vendors, or any of those other issues. It’s about one simple fact:

Gearing through PvE will always yield superior results in today’s iteration of WoW.

Blizzard has stated many times in the past that this is not the intent. When can we expect changes?

At this point, the question should be can we expect changes at all?

This is the second expansion in a row where PvE gearing and gear in general is far superior to that of PvP.

they had it right finally in WoD imo, the gear scaled close to equal in combat, then they kicked that format to curb after the expansion, I don’t get these devs sometimes.

It’s always been a problem.

The “Elitist Jerks” of the WoW scene don’t want to be manhandled by PvPers.

Now that they’re actually in charge of the game, you see PvP drop off almost entirely in terms of “pinnacle prioritization” and you’ve got two mountain peaks, with PvE being the much higher and more highly regarded one.

I personally don’t agree with how they’ve managed the game, and I really do think that the top PvPers ought to be the scary ones in town, while the PvE players need to take a step back and realize that, even at their essential peak there’s not a lot to be done with “competitive” raiding like any of the other, much more wildly successful, directly competitive games out there.

In other words, the indirect competition (pve) has been given kingship while its direct competitor (pvp) suffers in its shadow.

There’s an obvious imbalance.

Yep, WoD gearing system was nearly perfect. Too bad they are too stubborn to bring it back.

I find this quite hilarious as the game director is literally the guild leader of a guild named “Elitist Jerks” lol.

This stems from the substats on pvp gear sucking and the fact you can only farm 2 pieces of pvp gear a week. Lets say you want to stack all haste versatility then the last thing you would want to gear from is pvp because you cant pick your substats. especially when you can get unlimited drops in pve a week. If they did it like mop with substat reroll it would be fine but still far faster to gear pve. Pvp has become a joke in this game and has been since wod scaling and the introduction of arenas dampening.

This isn’t even about taking shots at pve or the devs for me it’s just about basic equality in the game where they made a clear effort in the past (wotlk, cata, mop, wod) to make both gearing paths viable but then abandoned that philosophy for seemingly no reason and without explanation.

It’s really disheartening.

Most people quit wow because they don’t have time for it anymore, according to blizzard’s statements regarding their internal data. I personally quit raiding because it was too time intensive (3-4 nights a week in my old guild) in favor of arena (1-2 nights a week with a friend or two). I quit for over 9 years after that before coming back. I’m here now, I want to enjoy the game - and I do enjoy the gameplay - but I can’t help but notice that players running relatively mindless content are outgearing me and are enjoying an advantage in my preferred mode of content because they ran through a few dungeons that are, by any objective measure, really easy.

The effort to reward ratio is completely out of whack. Again, I feel that it is entirely because blizzard doesn’t want to make PvE players feel “forced” to PvP for a gearing advantage. the problem with that is that now PvP players are forced to PvE for gear, and Blizzard doesn’t seem to care.

They don’t.

people who play endless hours of pvp should without a doubt be rewarded good pvp gear, just like someone who plays dungeons a lot for good pve gear.

I made a post about this in the PvP forum with a video linked that shows Ion’s philosophy towards PvP gearing.

In summary: They are okay with forcing you to be a Mythic Raider to participate in high rated pvp.

This games been out since 2004 and youre just realizing this now OP? Well i am certainly sorry it took you so long. Now its time to get over it and move on, nothings changing.

This is a level of blind that even Ray Charles can’t comprehend.

This may or may not be off topic a bit, but I really miss the old honor vendors and grinding honor. Gearing up alts through random bg’s used to be how I spent 90% of my WoW time. Get a full set of current season gear, play a few games… and then start gearing the next alt. You just repeat until the next season comes out.

It was fun. It gave me great replay value. There was nothing wrong with that system and it genuinely makes me sad thinking back to those games and looking at what the game is now.

Nah you’re wrong. Blizzard seems to think you had a hard time finding the vendor. That’s why they made a PvP building with a weekly RNG loot crate for you to open every Tuesday.

I fail to see the logic in this.

They think we can’t find a vendor yet somehow having to pick a piece of gear via a quest where you actually have go to an NPC is more intuitive.

Well for me it is. Best solution is to get back pvp gear and pvp vendor.

But for sure I understand the frustration about the current game loot systems.

My advice to you is to either disreguard it and do like you did before. Or to play another game. Blizzard clearly doesn’t value you as a respected costumer if you mainly pvp. I remember watching Soda pretty much just leaving the game forever after doing wqs because of ap/legendary farming in Legion. It’s just dumb systems made to grab the most money they can with the overjustification effect on casual content.

There’s nothing really to do about it. And I feel next Blizzcon for me is gonna show Blizzard true colors for their futur. Spoiler I expect more than 1 phone game.

There is no indication they have made any effort to make this happen. My conclusion? It isn’t what they want.

They want mythic raiders to win at PvP by virtue of having the best gear. It’s basically free wins at PvP as a perk to the golden children of wow.

Me? I dusted off a level 100 who I twinked during Legion to do some mount runs this week. His last piece of wod PvP gear is his ilvl 144 +87 versatility trinket.

I miss PvP vendors.

I don’t think the devs view the game in separate compartments like others do. They seem to see every aspect of the game as one single progressive unit. People who solely do random bgs and people who do normal/heroic raiding are always going to be behind the people churning out multiple +10 keys a day and mythic raiding each week. People who aggressively push to 2100+ at the beginning of the season and continue to play 50-100 matches a week are going to also potentially get some decent item level and itemization. The devs probably vision people using every avenue to progress. Doing M+ keys, rated arena and raiding.
