PSA: Flagging is NOT the replacement for downvotes!

Imply vs infer

Not in this society…

Then it isn’t very common, is it?

The issue isn’t that flagging or moderation exist. Its the preposterous grounds that things can be modded or flagged for because the CoC is so vague.

That assumes there was a legitimate reason to flag it in the first place =p

Sadly, we can’t really delve deep into the moderation side of things without breaking the rules or I would explain some stuff as well.

Most of the time LFR thread are mostly trolling like this one Why does LFR drop gear?. Most of time trolling could just be replaced by posts that main goal are just to cause division/anger in the community with no real constructive point. Linking a video of asmongold and saying look at this could also be considered trolling (and mostly advertising), since its a subject that really cause people to lose their mind.

Personnaly I agree that “trolling” could be removed as a reason but I feel they keep it to give themselve a reason when some post don’t fall in one of the other categories.

So individuals aren’t accountable for losing their own mind, its someone else’s fault?

Agreed. It appears to just be a catch all reason.

True or false - it was still possible in the original Forum version to report posts or comments. All flagging does is virtually give you a little flag icon to click on and report the offending (or non-offending) comment or post and if a lot of people flag it, it goes grey and is noted as being flagged until its investigated.

Probably the only thing I’d change is this “greyed out notification” thingy. It’s a bit like the result of the old Downvotes. Don’t take away the option to downvote or flag, just don’t show that it has been. It’s sort of like the internet version of sending someone to Coventry. If the outcome isn’t visible, perhaps more people will just not bother going after that outcome.

True. Reporting a post would give you a few options or categories to chose from and then a text box to enter comments.

Appears to be accurate. One of the big changes tho, is people are using the flagging option as a replacement for the downvote option. Certainly seems to be much more flagging going on now.

What also needs to be happen is restrict accounts to like and flag a post only once; as it stands, I can switch to any of my 27 characters and file a separate flag to your post and give a separate like. If each characters acts as a different entity, you can see what kind of a problem this can cause.

Blue already said that there taking action against those that are false flagging others. That those caught false flagging would get a forum vacation.

Uhm, people warned about this before blizz brought out the new forums. If blizz didn’t think of a way to prevent people from “dislike flagging” then that’s on blizz.

I think the issue is that instead of “report,” it’s called “flagging” now.

I think the icon needs changed to a little :warning:️ symbol called “report.” And the options should be as follows:

  • Language - extremely offensive language
  • Harassment - bullying or shaming
  • Code Violation - against CoC
  • Incorrect forum - belongs in a different forum

And at the bottom of that in bold, it should say:

Reporting is for code violations only and should not be used to disagree. Any misuse will result in disciplinary action.

That may help to clarify what we should be using it for and maybe more clearly define the reasons.

Thoughts?

Good idea.

Not a bad idea. I hate not being able to report that something is just in the wrong forum (like Classic threads). Harassment is kind of like trolling though in that there are many different interpretations as to what harassment is. Someone said they think my idea is dumb = harassment? We know from the game that harassment has a lot more than that to it, usually with long term issues. Also, I wouldn’t put shaming in there. People say “oh he used my armory to shame me” and sometimes that’s true, but often people are just trying to point out inconsistencies or flaws in an debate.

Code violation/guidelines (GD actually has some extra rules outside of the CoC).

Hmm. So maybe consider harassment bullying and threats?

Wanna bet?

Hmm? Not sure I follow.

The elusive ‘Reply to’ button strikes again!
i.e., meant for the OP.

Oh well…

Not just auto gray threads will lock down for 24 hours if flagged enough and unlock after that time. What if anything are the mods doing in those cases? If enough flags are happening, to gray out a thread for that amount of time why aren’t they saying anything?

But… I am the OP.

I’m still confused! lol

IMO egregious overuse of flagging should dilute one’s flagging power… in other words, the more you flag stuff, the less weight each flag has. Someone who flags at the drop of a hat will eventually get to a point where their flags have zero effect.

It’s a sort of “boy who cried wolf” system.

Might be a lot of coding to try to do that, though. It sounds a bit more complex than what I’d expect from Blizz these days. But I could be wrong!
