PSA: flagging is NOT a downvote button

Oh you are talking on the OLD forums. Yeah I remember those threads. I remember seeing like 3 people complaining about it and all of their “who they are” was getting them disliked by people in those threads. I had a few suggestions to them.

  1. The forums are not your diary.
  2. The forums are not your therapist.
  3. If you write your posts in a way that is annoying, people may dislike it strictly for the style and not the context.

Of course the idea that they were being followed around also discounts that their posts may have just been disliked by people reading those threads. I also remember the debates over what the dislike button was for, if it was for disliking a post or if it was to use instead of reporting a post in violation of the ToS.

I’m pretty sure the the posters reporting know exactly what they are doing and it doesnt have anything to do with “just wanting to dislike or downvote” something.

I dont think the number of reports or flags would decrease with dislikes being added because a dislike is just one more click, and flagging a post means maybe a mod will get rid of it or the poster which is more powerful than just voting against something.

Seems like you got what you were looking for, snark and all, and you know it.

Afraid someones feelings will get hurt. Of course getting your thread zapped is just as bad, if not worse.

I read this as flogging and got worried.

This PSA is worthless. People will still flag, regardless of what OP says about it not being a “downvote button”. Flagging is literally the new downvote button and I am not surprised if “certain” people abuse it, lmao.

Some PSA from a random person isn’t going to make the situation any better.

Might as well start teaching a Lion to eat a plant, Lol.

They need to start suspending those that flag just because they disagree with somebody’s opinion. It might happen on occasion but they clearly don’t crack down on it. Or they can come up with a system that ignores the flags instead. Abuse and your voice goes into the trash.

A certain person who used to say she was quitting 8 billion times used to use the forums as a Facebook page. But those aren’t the folks I’m talking about.

They really weren’t.

Seems like you have nothing of value to add here. And no, it’s not what I was “looking for.”

It literally isn’t.

That actually means CMs monitoring the situation.

Now, it’s an anonymous way to silence someone for any reason and it’s likely to get 404ed because of the lack moderation and easier to just delist or outright 404.

Like the mega 80s thread. :frowning:

because obviously disagreeing with something doesn’t mean you can dislike it

I save my reports for actual trolling.

100% agree that the flag reasons need to be more specific. Having “could be offensive” leaves it open for anyone to claim they were offended by it, therefore, not abusing the flagging system.

Don’t try to justify your misuse of the button.

If you are flagging people you disagree with, you’re not using the button for its intended purpose.

This has got to stop. I had two posts flagged recently by someone alt hopping–which is a seperate, if related issue. Both were reinstated after the fact but it just wastes the moderator’s time. Time that could be better used dealing with actual issues.

They should honestly track the flags if they don’t already and just start discounting those from users that they find constantly flagging posts that don’t break any rules.

They have to check flags though. If somebody continually flags and the posts keep getting reinstated they should either have their flags mean nothing or get a vacation. I actually like them losing the privilege of having a voice more then a suspension.

or you could act like a grown up, and use the report function as intended.

You’re 100% right, but you’re never going to get agreement on this because there is always a subset of people who believe that the many should be able to silence the few, and go figure, those people would be more likely to gather. They will never get banned because it’s too easy to lie to someone looking to just close a ticket and move on. Express your controversial WoW opinions here though and let reports be damned, that’s literally what the forums are for. While true I’ve never seen anyone get banned, I’ve also never been banned for a “community downvoted” post, it just says someone removed it.
