Post-Mortem Analysis: Why Wrath Classic Didn’t Live up to the Nostalgia

…you forgot to mention “the social/community aspect of the game no longer exists” in your list of reasons??

Seems to me that’s a pretty glaring difference between 2008 Wrath and 2022 Wrath. Yes, the botting situation got waaay worse between then and now and Blizzard did nothing about it/let the bots operate unopposed, but to me the BIGGEST thing that makes Wrath Classic “not the same” is the erosion of the social/community aspect and how it basically no longer exists in the “modern” versions of the game (retail, Classic, etc)

Wrath was never a good expansion. Dreary zones. Annoying quests. Death Knights are horribly designed. Leveling was completely ruined.

Yeah, the wow community is probably the worst community in MMO history. The less we have to interact with pug types the better.

The community was decent until logs/gear score/item level became a thing. Meters were always trending in that direction, if only blizzard would have read the tea leaves and disabled meter add ons.

Not to mention things like weak auras and unnecessarily complex macro strings. They really never addressed some issues where coder/tech people have a huge advantage over say, everyone else.

People didn’t want Classic Wrath. They wanted 2008 back.

You’re crazy if you think there was a solution to remake WG 2008 in classic. Realm population densities are way different, faction balance is non-existent outside of Grobb, there was no solution outside of an instanced bg.

You got RDF in the phase it was necessary (frost badges required for tier) and when it was originally released.

I think they dropped the ball with the ilvl changes and inflated importance of Ulduar. The Ulduar phase was too long and the gear was too good. Following up 6 months of Ulduar with 4 months of ToC where a lot of people were meh on the rewards just killed the momentum. By the time ICC was out I was just content to kill the LK a few times and call it.

It didn’t help that to get the rewards in ICC you needed to also run the daily dungeon crap for more frost badges. Went from nothing to do for the last 1.5 phases to daily chores.

The Ulduar changes came about because Blizzard never felt one of their best raids got a fair shake. It’s once again Blizzard pushing it’s own agenda on players rather than letting the players tell Blizzard what they think is fun.

Classic has been cursed from the start. Vanilla Classic was cursed. TBC Classic was cursed. Wrath was cursed. Cata will be cursed.

#NoChanges was the reason.

The real answer is cata didnt ruin wow by turning into retail. Wotlk did. Combat is trivial in wotlk.

Rdf kills community just as foretold. Players turned from rpg fans into competition speedrunning sweatlords.

People lied for a decade saying how good wotlk was. Skandered cata for 10 years.

People wont admit they were wrong. I saw it for myself. I no longer care to hear how wow was in the old days. It was all lies and half truths.

wrath 2008 was a new game
wrath 2023 is 15years old game

you can never expect something to give same feeling after being used for 15years.
if you wanted the awesome wrath in your memory then you need to find a time machine

How did you ever see any of the raids then?

I think a main reason is when Wrath came out in 2007… that was it, just Wrath. There wasn’t a Classic version, a classic hardcore, a Classic plus, a retail version, and then Wrath. The WoW player base had only one version of the game to play. Also there wasn’t many other great MMOs out there as there are today. Mainly though back in 2007 if you wanted to play World of Warcraft, you played Wrath, not 5 different variants of the game

Thats a lot of words wasted when you could have just said “Original Wrath had 12 Million Subscribers, Classic doesnt even have a fraction of that and it showed in every aspect of the game.”

yes it is a great expac with fun rotations, hybrid builds, can outskill people in PVP but to be honest I had more fun on priv servers. There were no boosts, gdkps, and people would invest time in their character so they would fly to the summon stone & not rage quit so easily

wrath this time around did not feel remotely close to the original, they tampered with too much & botting was ridiculous. There were gold buyers and the odd DK bots but GMs were active & would shut them down & scare the living crap out of people

there were raids every week, the population at its peak was maybe 6-8 thousand? The attunement meant that people would run their alts through naxx, uld etc. and even Uld was buffed for more HP on bosses

it was a great experience, the only thing you could get with donations $ were heirlooms and mounts/tabards

Its not wrath, thats all that needs to be said. If they would have made Wrath and then people didnt stick around then people can say it didnt live up to the nostalgia. Titan Rune Dungeons (mythic + lite) is a big reason i didnt like it and the thing is you dont need this dungeon difficulty at all. It served no actual purpose but to try to get retailers to stick around and many of us hate retail so making the game like retail is going to ruin the attempt.

Not to mention it pushes the game community towards the toxic side.

And doesn’t accomplish the goal it sets out to do, making dungeons relevant the entire expansion.

Source: people are running FoS, one of the few entirely unchanged dungeons in Classic WotLK for their emblems every single day.

I got everything out of the expansion that I expected.
Just wish they would have banned all the people selling boosts in arena for “gold” and “subs”.

The developers gave WoTLK almost zero support. Bugs taking 6 months to getting fixed or blatantly tone death takes on difficulty.

Never forget warriors being able to 2 hand wall for an entire season with broken ilvl scaling due to the horrible ulduar ilvl bump.

Wotlk was left to die by the developers who were playing hardcore instead

There’s still at least 2 incredible obvious glaring bugs on Sindragosa and we’re getting crickets.

All ive been doing is running FoS. No point in running anything else.

Agreed.

pre-SoD i started running randoms for the extra 49g and badges to round out my heirloom collection but i don’t even see the point in that. The gamma+ queue is overrun with boosty bois and its awful and devoid of talented players currently.

FOS or bust for 5 badges I don’t even need and 100g.
