Please start handing out permanent silences

Yeah this won’t be abused at all. RCR is already being abused and it requires a high volume of reports.

that’s like only things in chat on my server. I don’t mind.

And [skill name] word - jokes ofc

I think it’s mostly automated at this point. If they are really egregious send in a support ticket with a screen shot of what they said. I’ve sent them tickets for highly offensive names on the forums in the past (it was a name referring to hatred of a group of people.). They will actually look at a ticket.

I’d rather play a game where some raunchy chat is let slide than a game where I have to worry about being banned every time an overly sensitive 23 year old who can’t handle the internet happens to be online.

And I don’t say that because I spew garbage in chat all day. I don’t. I just don’t like over-moderation. I think Blizzard’s weird amount of attention given to “toxicity” in Overwatch was and is stupid too.

Blizzard is not even anywhere close to reaching the point of over-moderation.

A company like Hi-Rez Studios is, yes. They ban people like they’re the plague, and for saying the most normal things half of the time, but because somebody was offended–even jokingly offended–there’s your ban for ‘x’ amount of time.

Blizzard Entertainment could assuredly find a middle-ground if they cared to.

And yet this makes me happy, I feel the need to sit in town and report all the offensive posters in /trade now. It like gives me a reason to turn it back on.

Yeah, see, I don’t trust them to do that.

That sounds like Hi-Rez Studios level of banning, lmao. I play Smite quite frequently, and have received a few silences myself, so I should know. xD

silences are reviewed and applied by a human.

…screenshots are not accepted as any sort of “evidence”.
rcr logs the offending line of chat.

True, but I send them anyway, to help them find the correct log if anything. Sadly I have a video of my character on a mount that was removed from the game, but since I did a Server transfer in early TBC the logs of me having that mount, or completing the trade in quest were erased, and they felt bad that there was nothing they could do, even with the video evidence of my character riding it.

I don’t even read trade chat anymore.

@OP, I generally agree. Of course blizz would need to be circumspect. I wish realms still had GMs moderating - I do miss them in WoW.

But Overwatch is thriving and has a stellar community…

It will never happen, OP. Anonymity reveals who people really are and all their petty insecurity and plain stupid meanness just gets puked out on chat. Blizzard can’t afford to police all that nastiness.

Just turn off trade when you don’t need it. The vile stuff used to make me cry, honestly. But now I am older and know that people who spew nastiness get back what they put out there. My responsibility is what I put out there, which isn’t perfect by a long shot, but I try everyday to do better.

An author once said that you have to think of hateful comments and insults as slimy slugs. People can hand you a slug but you do not have to swallow it.

There is a permanent silence. It’s called ignore. If someone says something you find so disgusting, you report them and then you silence them. Let Blizzard dole out punishments as needed, but you yourself have the tools to permanently silence anyone you like. You’ll never see what they say again.

People still use trade chat? I haven’t seen it used in months.

Anyway. They do, but it’s an escalating punishment that gets to that. So report and /ignore and enjoy the game.

Why couldn’t you just use the /ignore or leave the trade/general chat? :man_shrugging:

I mean, if i’m tried of all the nasty stuff on there, i just leave the chat. That person being annoying? i block 'em. Or i just wouldn’t even pay it attention.

Because then the person saying awful things has no punishment for saying awful things and continues to do so, until the community/channel dies or stops talking. Wonder why people don’t talk in random dungeons or interactions any more?

Just put them on ignore and move on.
