If someone gets silenced for saying sick things on trade chat.
Please, I’m tired of racism, sexism, sick and nasty jokes. The rules are there, but they need to really be enforced. I won’t even repeat some of the things people were saying today. Does reporting even work?
[Forum Moderator Note: Ironically, or unsurprisingly, this thread was filled with too many inappropriate comments, which are no more allowed on the forums than they are in any in-game chat channel. Please continue to use the Report and Ignore functions provided for in-game chat as well as the flag functions provided for forum posts, so that we can continue to take appropriate actions.]
Report and mute one person, even permanently, five more will take their place.
Welcome to WoW, a game with so many people and many ways to chat with all those people.
This is just a silly thing to be upset over.
someone is in trade talkin about coronavirus and i’m just wondering when he’s gonna get his lifelong ban
edit: this is a joke. I’m taking the whole “sick things” from the OP literally and used the coronavirus as a prop for the joke. Now please leave me alone.
Sadly there’s little you can do outside of reporting them. Just report them whenever you see it, and trust in Blizzard to handle the rest. There’s a lot of disgusting people out there who will unveil their true racist/vulgar thoughts because it’s online, and that’ll always be the case. There’ll always be more and they’ll always be out there, but thankfully Blizzard has put in tools to allow you to filter them out, use them as best you can. In time you’ll have filtered the good chunk of them.
I play on one of the biggest pop servers around. I have trade chat on. The most “disgusting” thing (quotes are important here) is people linking an ability, prefaced by a certain word that refers to a certain body region. In fact, they’re doing it right now. They just used [Unleashed Power] and [Torment]…
What kind of servers do you guys play on where you see racism ? Especially with any kind of regularity.
I just want an account wide ignore list. If I ignore someone on one of my characters I want it done for all of my characters and for everyone of the ignored person’s alts. It could be hidden so we do not see that person’s bnet name just so the person is ignored. Just give me better tools to ignore people is all I ask for.
To you maybe. I don’t mind people discussing a newsworthy event like Kobe Bryant or the Coronavirus epidemic. Trade chat is the town square for WoW players. If what they talk about doesn’t interest me, I simply do not participate.
I think Blizzard should do a better job of handling it’s online communities.
Channels that players get put into by default, such as General and Trade, should have rules that actually get enforced.
If you wanna say things 99.9% of people would never say irl in a crowd, you should have to go somewhere else.
People who behave with some modicum of civility should not have to bend over backwards to avoid you.
The fact Blizzard let the default public chat channels in WoW devolve so much is a sad thing. People only abuse it because they know the punishments are a joke.
Sadly, I don’t think things will change at this point so if you don’t want to see it you have to isolate yourself.
Trade chat is just an un-moderated joke at this point full of spam, scams and people trying to incite trouble.
Well if that’s the most vulgar/racist thing you’ve seen said I’d say you’re very fortunate. I have a couple toons on Proudmoore and other servers, but I mainly play on Moon Guard (which is what my main is on here). Yes I’ve seen what you’re talking about. But people do get caught up in many day to day conversations about politics, or whatever else may be going on in the news too from time to time. A lot of the time those conversations lead to racism or just downright vulgarity. A more recent one I’ve seen is people joking about how WoW is going to need a great purge because Shadowlands will add true minority customization (blacks, asians etc.)
Yes. It is working exactly as intended. Silences scale up exponentially with each successive infraction. This means that people who make the occasional off-color joke don’t get “perma silenced” as you put it, but that repeat offenders who do and contribute nothing but vitriol will gradually find themselves in timeout for much, much longer periods of time.
Yes, they do enforce the rules but people have to actually report the folks who are breaking them.
Right click and select the proper category. That will mute them for the duration of your play session so you don’t have to see what they type. It also takes the chat logs and attaches them to the report for the GMs to review. It can take time for them to review, but they do get to them.
The penalty starts out pretty mild at only 24 hours, but doubles each time someone has a silence applied.
Here is an example of the typical escalation.

If someone feels a Silence was not earned, they can appeal. It takes only a few minutes at most for a GM to review the chat log attached to the penalty.
Also keep in mind, while Trade Chat is the title of the channel, that is a suggestion. People are free to talk about other things so long as they follow the rules governing language and spam.
This applies to all the public facing channels.
What you and your friends say in guild or private party, are less regulated because you have to join those voluntarily.
EDIT - and yes, I do know people who are silenced for months or years. Fun fact - if you get silenced in any Blizzard game, you can’t currently even create a game in D3. There is a bug that prevents silenced players from playing D3 at all. Some with long silences are a bit upset about that.
Just keep it off. There is no legitimate reason to keep it on anymore. I just went through a town on an alt that I forgot to shut it off on. Bunch of edge lords making fun of someone dying. This game makes me really dislike people sometimes.
