Please fix archaeology

Okay bud here we go again, Player power is locked behind a grind that is enormous, tedious, and many players feel obligated to do content related to player power at the cost of fun. That leads to those players having a real bad time, their concerns are valid. No where did I state that it should be easy or a hand out, I have stated that grindable player power should be obtained deterministically, you chose a number so silly it would take upwards of 500 hours of grinding to get there.

I will say, cata fishing does pick up later…there are some cool zones where you can fish up volatile fire, bolts of embersilk and boxes with greens and blues (sometimes epics) in them. And it counts towards the guild achieve to unlock the raid feasts. Definitely rn fishing has like no purpose… hell i might even do a tiny bit of fishing once cata starts just to help the guild get the achieve. Definitely just gonna do it in between rep questing and dungeon queues though.

Oh! That’s actually good news then, that’s just like Classic fishing with the Mithril Trunks… Thanks for telling me now I’m actually looking forward to Cataclysm fishing!

The difference is you are comparing it to things like azerite power. Which is 100% different because its a scaling neccessity.

This is a 2 week long item that is marginally better than anything else and makes almost no difference in the long run. If you really want it grind for it, but because it is unnecessary, if you dont want to put in the time don’t. Think of it as similar to thunderfury bindings, and things like sulfuras. Lots of legendary good items. Not everyone is going to get them. And most people never will. How is that any different? Thunderfury is bis for classic and pretty damn good through most of tbc. Does that mean that it should have a bad luck modifier? Or is it that rarity that makes it special and worth grinding? Rare things that arent a requirement being a grind is fine. My tone would be completely different if not getting the archeology items made progression impossible or it was a barrier to entry. But it’s neither of those. So youre making an issue out of nothing.

where did I say that?

Edit: Also it’s completely different from anything inside raid, because lockouts.

I’ll give you a little heads up too… tolbarad near the ghost docks area. 4 of the salvageable junk pools spawn. And twilight highlands to the west up in the mountains, these fire pools spawn that are like 3-9 volatile fire per pool. Good luck my brave fishing buddy lol.

Ah apologies, the azerite comment was from a mage in another thread. My bad.

But, the only difference is you can farm it constantly instead of only have 1 chance per week to get it. People have been farming invincible for years on retail without getting it. So no, it is not different than raid gear. Except that it is arguably more accessible. And, things like thunderyfury are straight up Bis. Which means if you have a problem with player power coming out of lots of rng you should despise those as well. You want the item you farm for it. Some people farmed all the way from mc release into tbc every week for bindings before they got both. That is an equal if not greater timesink for more impactful player power. And all of this just loops back to the original point, this is 100% a player issue. If that 2 weeks of 12 ilvl is that big of a deal to you. Put in the effort and go for it. But go in knowing there is at least a decent chance you wont get it. If you arent ok with that just do it in your freetime to see if you get lucky. If you never find it, it makes 0 difference in the grand scheme of things.

Side note, if you google it, a dude on retail just found it on his 3902 solve a few months ago, Solely for the xmog. Some people get it, some don’t. And that is completely fine. It is why rare things exist. And as i stated if this was in any way gatekeeping raids or hindering progress id be much more on your side. But its essentially a vanity item with very little overall impact. People just went in with the expectation “ill definitely get the 359 i want” and when they didnt they lost their s**t.

I dunno man, I remember back in classic farming the heck out of plaguelands to get the best epic gear for my warlock. The darkmoone fair necklace if anyone remembers. It was grindy AS HELL but I knew I was on track to getting it. I knew every mob dead and item dropped was a step on the path. But with archeology it is totally random. That doesn’t feel good. It is like hoping for triple 7s on a slot machine. It is just a luck of the draw thing that shouldn’t exist except that it keeps people hoping and being frustrated. Screw that noise. I hope they change archeology and make it a straight grind, not this lottery winner jack

I understand that sentiment. But, the idea of archeology is not to exist soley for the purpose of the 359s. They are basically a random reward you can get while using the profession in its intended way(exploring the new world for max levels, making some gold, and learning some lore).

The current obsession over getting these super rare items is what is causing the problem, not the profession itself. Archeology is not supposed to be like a main profession where you max it out and just get loot. It is more like fishing, you do it a little bit at a time as a time killer, sometimes you can get something cool like a pet, or with fishing you can do the event for the heirloom ring.

If the key point if the profession was the 359 gear, itd be a different story. But you are supposed to do the profession for its other reasons and maybe stumble upon one. It is inherently different than grinding a rare quest item, or a direct gear progression.

I understand the frustration of going for something and not getting it, as i said earlier im at over 800 solves with 0 359s, but the upgrades you get from it are so minimal, instead of bashing my head on it, i just do it in between queues or when I’m bored. The entire culture around “i need this weapon shiny 359 purple” is the problem much more than it being a grind.

If youre burned out on arch, dont do it anymore. Youll have pretty much the same dps and a similar weapon in a week, and as a dk an upgraded weapon in 2 or so if youre lucky

gratz! how many alts did you do? my one alt with like 50ish dwarf solves is yet to see anything purple :[

If you really think that archaeology shouldn’t be farmed this hard because “that wasn’t the intent” then you should support rolling back all the epics that have already dropped and gating them behind 525. People would know that the grind isn’t worth it in the few days they have between leveling, spamming heroics, grinding rep for the relevant factions, skilling up professions, and leveling alts. That would be in line with the “intention.”

As it stands, any player who is concerned with remotely competitive raiding is a chump for not trying to get the thing that Blizzard added to the game while there’s not much else to do. Allowing people to get these items in pre-patch is what’s breaking their original intention, so if your argument doesn’t include fixing that mistake then it’s disingenuous.

The alt thing is pure tinfoil, wasting hours to cap again just to have the same chances as before lol

Does anyone actually think this is good game design?

Obviously since people love deterministic things on lockout, how about each day, every dig site is only available once per day (still gotta get them to pop up though) and a vendor that sells everything for specific fragments.

Since your above average daily locked BIS items are usually a month or so to obtain, the epics should cost somewhere in the ball field of 20,000 to 25,000 fragments.

But of course you can still roll the dice if your feeling lucky! Fixed easy!

Is this where we submit our worst possible “suggestions?” Thanks Hoofman, I was looking for a place for that.

I really hope a dev doesn’t see that, I don’t wan’t to be responsible for this if it comes to pass.

So gonna break this one down. Do agree they shouldnt have released it in prepatch as i said before. But it is a 450 requirement for the weapons (always has been). And now that it’s out, it is what it is.
Also, you do not need these items to be competitive in raiding is the main point here. Now, it comes down to if you want them go for them, for the very hardcore the grind is worth it no matter how long it takes, but the items you get from arch do not make a significant difference. And with how available wow information is now, everyone went into it knowing they are very rare. It’s just everyone thinks theyll be the lucky one to get the rare drop in 30 solves. So when they arent they get upset.

I would also argue part of your argument is flawed. I think one core reason blizzard released arch is to give people something to do, and to get people that werent interested in releveling out into the updated world. Cant really blame them for the degenerate behavior that followed lol.

For a cosmetic item that you can endlessly farm, yea… people do that all the time in wow. I will give you it’s more annoying than most since you have to fly all over, and that man was an extreme outlier. Was funny to read his post though.

I don’t think it’s good design to have to spend 1000 hours doing an insanely monotonous and repetitive task to get any item, cosmetic or otherwise :person_shrugging:

I’m really torn on this here. Archaeology is cool in that you can complete it and it’s a great activity for prepatch but the playerbase is so brain-rotted that they’re self-harming on it. It’s obviously the players fault, but it is Blizzards job to save us from ourselves. But also this is such an insanely low amount of utility. We’re getting nerfed raids anyways so it’s not even like it’s needed to help progression.
