I made a bank scout toon named Herpestitis, is that problematic? Corona is latin for crown and there’s a beer which arguably more people had in mind with their corona named characters than this virus. Blizzard made light of the swine flu epidemic that killed over 170k Americans before it fizzled out by using it as a debuff in northrend. If you don’t find it funny ignore it and move on. Your moral policing is not wanted nor needed.

In general it’s OK to be offended by something, but the vast majority of what we see today is “sympathetic offense.”
That is to say that they believe it would offend people, in general, and take that offense onto themselves. They might not actually care about it personally, for example “I don’t care but”. A lot of people, a lot, assume that because someone could be offended then it’s offensive and shouldn’t be done.
Even if no one is offended.
My friend, who’s part Asian, makes mild racist jokes about herself, and she got yelled at because “what would someone of Asian descent say!” Her only response was like… nothing I think it’s pretty funny. So does my Asian dad.

Humor is a clinically approved and effective coping mechanism. If you don’t like the names then block them, and magically they will disappear. Stuff like this is aggravating, because it can be solved with a little social maturity and the block function. This is the equivalent of wanting steak removed from the menu because someone you know died choking on steak.

I’ll tell these people what people spammed us with on wowhead: Sometimes, people need a joke in these hard times.
Do I agree with it? No. I’m livid at wowhead for their joke. But other people seem to think making jokes about the virus is better than letting it control you.
AKA If it’s good for the goose, it’s good for the gander.
Edgy names, getting something past the Blizz censors, that kind of thing has always been good fun. I have named rogues Backdoors and priests Kinkynun on several servers. This COVID-19 trend is just another facet- not about seeking attention, as sticking it to the Man a little. I saw a priest named Covidnurse and thought that was well-done. I recommend that OP find a game where he plays with NPCs only, and not other humans, because clearly he’s too sensitive to hang with actual human gamers if this kind of thing causes him to take umbrage.

Corona is also a word in spanish meaning crown, which is something relatively common in fantasy settings. So yeah, banning that word would be quite troublesome.
They had better take out all vehicles because people die in crashes, all water because people drown and oh yea all weapons in a game called WARcraft
