Player Housing Can Save World of Warcraft

I want a gothic mansion in Telogrus.

Space mansion.

If you read the full post, then, you would find that I am in agreeance with you. You call it “directing mentality,” and I, quite literally, call for a change in design philosophy. Visit the section titled philosophy, and see if that isn’t exactly what you mean. Their design philosophy needs to change all around, and implementing this feature in a true holistic way would be the beginning of admitting their philosophy has hitherto been deeply flawed.

I know you meant this sarcastically, but, yeah, why not? If there’s a large demand for a feature, why not consider it?

After all, a lot of people really do love pokemon pet battles.

I wouldn’t give too much credence to the resident sh*tposter

Have you ever seen HGTV?
They had those extreme home makeover shows where they had like 3 days and only $50,000 to fix up a house before selling it.
Sure they went over budget $20k, but then the owners were able to sell their 4 bed 2 bath so they could move into their new 5 bed 2 bath since they might have kids some day.

“Housing will make WoW dead!”

Logs into FF14
Teleports to Limsa Lominsa
Sees an ocean of people roleplaying, on the auction house, and crafting, as well as chatting

Wow, what a freaking wasteland, housing really made this place a ghost town.

I’m kind of in skim mode today because my eyes are spazzing out IRL, but

Not sure how that translates to player housing but okay…

Especially since Blizzard will give an instance portal for each side… Okay, everyone’s house is inside. You can invite up to 4 of your friends to visit but no more. Want more space, that will be 200,000 gold.

The community could easily host competitions for housing based on x and y restrictions or theme. Blizzard themselves could even host these things if they wanted to.
We have transmog competitions. I’ve participated and judged a few over the years. This is no different.

House decorating - surprisingly - can have a competitive element to it.

Rift has famously fierce housing competitions that play more like the Great British Bakeoff where yes its a competition, but its good vibes only.

Wildstar had a large number of them as well.

Just being silly. Those shows drive me insane but every Dr. in my area has that channel on in the waiting rooms, or did before covid.

Sure… However, to get this in the game, you have to translate these competitions to income for Blizzard. Are people going to buy furniture packages on the online shop?

I am not against housing really. I doubt I’ll participate more than is required to progress whatever expansion it is included in but not against it. Blizzard on the other hand is against it and won’t implement it unless it improves the bottom line. And don’t say “People will subscribe for housing.” Why would they? If all they want is housing there are hundred of life simulators out there that don’t have a monthly fee.

I appreciate the well thought out post from the originator of this thread. I’d love to see player housing included as part of the game.

For me, in its current state, WOW is less and less appealing to play for several reasons.

Rather than being negative towards the current state of the game, I’ give my thoughts on player housing.

  1. It’d be optional, and not tied to legendaries, character power, or anything that gives an advantage. If the players who only log on to raid or knock out their mythic + choose not to partake, they shouldn’t be penalized. Don’t tie it to the mission table, or any other advancement. Mission table may give you a cosmetic upgrade or something, but make it purely optional. Make it a choice, not a requirement. Perhaps add a second way to access mission tables, maps, ect. Again, not a requirement, just an additional way to access content.

  2. Everything in WOW is a grind-I’m fine with “you need lumber/stone/skins” or whatever to upgrade your “home” It would encourage the use of alt’s to do some mining/skinning, or whatever (might actually make ore or skins worth bothering to collect to auction. As it it, there is no call for them on the auction house. Or, resources to upgrade your housing could be available to all. With the current events in the world, adding something that everyone could do if they chose to, may add significant playtime to the game.

  3. Make it continuously upgradable. Not, “grind this out” upgradable, but cosmetically upgradable. I’ve played a different game off and on where if you found and killed the rare animal, you could mount it on the wall if you chose to do so.

  4. Make them not tied to raids or mythic dungeons. Having a place to put that trophy for completing a raid would be fine, and maybe encourage the more hardcore players to participate.

  5. I think it would be a “fun” things for more casual players. There isn’t a lot for the “filthy casual” like me to do during this expansion. I’d love to see more fun in the game for those that mostly play solo. Currently everything feels tied to mythic + and raiding. I’m dealing with a health issue that requires me to avoid stress. Mythic + and raiding are stressful to me, so I’m not doing much of it.

I don’t think it would be something that difficult to implement, we’ve already had garrisons and lodges.

Perhaps it would attract some of the playerbase that has left to the game (I’ve had real life friends quit playing lately because they feel like everything is just tied to improving gear, and the fun part of the game was gone.

My off the cuff $.02. Take it for what it is, just an opinion from a long time player who thinks that this expansion is lacking.

Good luck to you all, stay safe!

Why would they subscribe for housing in WoW? Because they love WoW, and they love building in WoW- in this case. I outlined in the original post how housing makes money in other MMOs. In-game-shop housing items you can buy with real money, credits, etc, and players buying wow tokens to get gold to buy items from AH, vendors, ETC. The economic possibilities are endless.

Yes. Very yes.

People will also buy tokens to be able to afford the more expensive plots as well.
If the Gilnean mansion costs 1,000,000g… well, either people are going to farm for it and increase played time metrics, or buy tokens for it, increasing overall revenue.

These features print money.

“Only a few people do them.”
They’re usually the whales.

You have more vision that I do… And probably more vision than Blizzard. Like I said, it will probably be a single house in Stormwind that has an instance portal. Horde will have a hut in Orgrimmar. There won’t be a need for a Gilnean mansion. Everyone will start with the same square box inside the portal.

We have the Farm and Garrison to see that the level of customization will be minimal.

Imagine a system that truly carries over from expansion to expansion, that doesn’t require constant balancing, but adds immersion to a game desperately in need of it again.
