This does make what professions can already do worthwhile. That is the central profession point. You say player housing isolated players, I’m saying Garrisons isolated players, and real player housing in every other MMO on the market has inspired social engagement. That is my experiential position, anyway

I get the idea, I think the issue is that it would take essentially an expansions worth of development time to make good and implement.

Even then, is the end goal to just sit in your house and look at your collections? I think the major issue with the game is it’s lack of meaningful social interaction outside of guilds. If this was somehow addressing that then I may be more on board with it being worth the development time.

I encourage you to look at some of the examples I mention with other MMOs. I argue that it precisely can make meaningful social interactions and has in every other MMO

100% this, every MMORPG i’ve played with player housing even when all the (external) houses are within the same zone it still isolated everyone since it destroyed the concept of hub cities

I might agree, some would say the same for all MMOs now. Im arguing for a better design philosophy to remedy that.

I play Rift. Rift housing features monthly contests, gatherings, sharing, community engagement, developer intervention, discord channels, and forum activity. These are not descriptions of an isolating feature

Yea. If I was going to even attempt to make it work, I’d have ‘housing’ be quite literally a shop in a main city or something along those lines. Or, make a guild or community house of some type where players can add to that space.

It just needs to be more fluid in some way. As in, I’m passing through the city and I see something and now I want to interact with it.

That’s all well and good for sure. Again, what you’re saying is fine, I’m just more of a pessimist and don’t really see any room for this stuff. We can’t even get the basic stuff right currently, ya know?

Like, professions right now are just pathetic compared to what they once were. In Blizzards efforts to ‘simplify’ the game, now most of the professions offer nothing past the first few weeks of the expansion. It’s not lazy, it’s just its something they don’t care about any longer. Professions are kept in the game simply because we have always had them. They don’t add to the player experience much any longer.

So take that line of logic and apply it to bigger things like your are suggesting here. If we can’t even do the basics right, how are they going to pull off more grand ideas?

How we pull off more grand ideas, im suggesting, is to change the design philosophy. Will they do that? Probably not. One can dream

Rift was a dead game within the first 6 months. Arguably anyone playing that game is there out of extreme dedication and thusly most features are bound to succeed due to the population carrying the game on it’s back regardless.

I see nothing in what you’ve listed that is a better “philosophy” toward game design, just shoehorning cozy game design into a game it doesn’t fit.

The solution would be to provide no accessibility to the house itself. Don’t let there be a bank, an AH, anything that would actually encourage a player to exist out in the world.

Just let it be cosmetic. Purely cosmetic.

Let us craft and sell stuff on the AH for it. Let us find treasures from the world to put in it.

I think saying that housing will “save” WoW is a bit silly. It will save some parts of WoW that are obviously feeling pretty rough right now, like professions. This has to be the absolute worst MMO for professions.

Housing that I could actively work on would be the content I played in retail outside of raid, and having something like this to do is necessary to keep me engaged.

Not saying housing is THE solution, but proper housing could be. Whatever they’re doing now just isn’t working for me.

And if you read the piece i note that the extend to which a game like Rift does thrive, is precisely because of these like-features. The dimension community in rift is ever-active and remains playing through all the years of otherwise nondevelopment

I want to wear my cosmetics not a trophy on a wall. That trope is over played.

Turning Rift into cozy game to justify it’s existence does not player housing in wow argument make.

Correct, it instead makes the arguement that housing is a feature that is one way to maintain longevity in an MMO atmosphere that is otherwise consistently hemorrhaging subscribers

So it makes the argument that when an MMORPG is dying, legitimately dying, try turning it into a cozy game to slow sub loss, but NOTHING about gaining subscriptions. Not worth the dev time

Im sorry that we are just fundamentally on two separate wave lengths, I don’t think your meeting my points fully and you don’t think my points have any merit. So that’s just that

Why not use this argument for pet battles being Pokemon?

Or having Transmog and character customization that isn’t a dress up game?
