I can’t use it the same way. In the past, I was able to advertise exactly what I needed:

I shouldn’t be muzzled just because I have a different provider for my cell phone or choose not to accept the risk to my device by adding software to it.
You still have access to guild chat, trade chat, discord, or any other various means of communication with other players to create groups and get the exact people you want.
Also, you and I both know that posting ‘need healer’ in your title, doesn’t dissuade people who are not healers from applying anyways
This is a non problem with easy and quick solutions that you can achieve with or without the authenticator

The player base has dwindled to a critical level. The LFG tool is more important than ever. Adding this policy, restricting communication with other players is assinine.
This is a free society, not some third-world dictatorship where all communication needs to be carefully controlled. Furthermore, this is a damned video game. They need to lighten up.
Okay, so I just decided to remove my authenticator and reconnect it.
At no point did it ask me to enter a phone number.
You only need a mobile number for SMS protection, which you can disable from the account settings page.
Here’s how you set up an Authenticator:
those are not compatible with the sms protect system.
News flash for ya buddy. Blizzard is absolutely a dictatorship. Their game, their rules. They did this to combat spam in LFG. From what I’ve seen, it’s worked.

6 out of 10 groups right now on Frostmourne Alliance are boost adverts for arenafans . net and similar. I do not want authenticator. So my LFG experience is worse and they havn’t fixed LFG spam. Revert the authenticator requirement, stop being lazy, and do your jobs and actually get rid of bots and adverts from your game.
Hell, pay a woman to do the job properly and pad your % female numbers for bobby kotick while you are at it!!! WIN WIN RIGHT?!
Literally never going to happen. It’s not even possible. Bots are always going to make a new account whenever they get banned and get right back to doing bot stuff

It’s heavy-handed and unnecessary. All they have to do is follow up on reported spam. I see 30% of the keys are still WTS, the same as before 9.1.5. Their deterrent that impacted 100% of the player base, to satisfy the small number of players who saw this as a minor nuisance, did not work. If they were going to be deterred, they would have already.
WTS runs in the LFG channel do not impact anyone’s game. They don’t inhibit you from joining or advertising your own runs. You can get pre-made group filter addon and set it to 2+ players and never see them, if you care that much. This harassment of the entire player base is ridiculous. It’s killing a game that’s already on life support.
One, Blizzard disagrees because posting them in LFG is literally against TOS.
Secondly, a lot of players disagree. It’s been something that a lot of the community hasn’t liked.
It’s not though. Having two factor enabled is objectively better. You also get other rewards for doing so.
Most people have phones that can use the authenticator app. After a certain point, not having hardware that is supported is on you.
It was necessary and it worked.
The WTS advertisements that are viewable now are coming from accounts that aren’t compromised, which means when they get banned the owners of them take a financial hit. There are also less advertisements than before and Blizzard can more easily get rid of them rather than playing a game of whack-a-mole with people who are constantly compromising accounts.
This is a good change.
People who refuse to secure their accounts have been put on notice. Secure your account. You don’t need to input a phone number to install an authenticator (I literally just removed and reinstalled mine to check, at no point was I asked for one). The only thing a phone number is used for is SMS protection, which is misleading because it doesn’t actually protect your account, it just notifies you via SMS when changes are made to your account. SMS protection can also be fully disabled via the security options menu before you even begin to set up an authenticator by selecting the option that tells Blizzard to always prompt authenticator approval on login.
Blizzard is not responsible for your laziness when it comes to tech and account security.
They should just do another run or two of the physical authenicators, then people who can’t use the mobile ones will have another option. It doesn’t have to be forever but for a couple months.

Having to change my cell phone provider is going to cost me real money.
I bought this game a long time ago. There was never then, nor is there now, any indication that I had to have a specific cell phone plan in order to access the full game. Unfettered player access is the real game. This is an MMO. They are depriving me access to other players in the game, by impeding my ability to communicate with them.
Furthermore, compromising my device with whatever software they prescribe is unacceptable. Most people use their cell phone for a myriad of purposes. If people don’t want to couple their cell phone with their game play, it’s their right. They don’t need to be coerced into it.
If I don’t give full access to my phone data and afford it full access to the internet, I am lazy? You’re an idiot.
