Persistent Green Circle Icon - "game data is being downloaded."

I’ve also been having this issue for the past few weeks and still have it occurring today even after the patch.

this has been happening to me since the day they released the prepatch prepatch download… ive been ignoring it hoping patiently it will go away with prepatch release… but its been going on for weeks now and its infuriating at times because it causes game freezing when it pops up.

Hey all,

We’re asking for clarification from the Battle.net team about whether or not the core of this issue was resolved. Now that 9.0 has launched and there isn’t a background download going on it’s possible that it’s cleared up, however if it was fixed it may not be retroactive.

Can those of you still affected try running a Scan and Repair again and report back to let us know if that clears it up now?

Thanks.

Running scan and repair now will report back.

Ran Scan and Repair. Issue is still there.

Scan and repair just fails. It takes forever to scan and then has a message that might as well say “whoops, stuff failed, lol”. Tried it three times.

Issue is still there, same green circle, same sound delay, same huge lag spikes.

Not sure if this info helps any, but just in case…

I did a full reinstall about a week and a half ago and had declined the pre-patch download until today. I haven’t had the issue since the reinstall and the game is loading fine today (after downloading the pre-patch) with no spinner or unusual lag.

Could it be file not properly updating with the current file(s) , and not overwriting something that was downloaded from the bad patch? Or have you guys still having the issue already done a reinstall?

Thanks again for the confirmation for those that tried the Scan and Repair again.

Since the repair is not working that likely means the install is corrupt beyond repair.

The last resort fix for those still affected would be to do a full uninstall and reinstall of WoW. Make sure to uninstall all versions (Retail, Classic, PTR). I’d recommend manually deleting the main World of Warcraft folder as well before reinstalling, just to make sure there’s no left over data or folders for the new install to piggyback on.

This seemed to fix it after I uninstalled all of the versions of WoW (Classic, PTR, Beta, Retail). I did not have to delete the actual wow folder for what it’s worth, but your mileage may vary.

This is very disappointing to hear.
I’m still experiencing this issue and my only internet option where I live in the Pacific Islands is metered and data costs $3 per gig, so downloading the entire game again will cost me around $200, awesome…

scan and repair didnt fix it here either - looks like a complete reinstall it is…

This has been happening for me since September. Honestly been trying to ignore it since I can’t figure out what is has been trying to download

Downloading a full install 80 gigs or so again. Hope it fixes it this time. :frowning:

“Our Battle.net engineers have identified what is causing this issue and are working on pushing a fix out.”

So much for that, hey?

Here’s what I did when I was having the issue if it helps anyone at Blizzard pin down an issue that might reoccur: (Sorry if this is a bit long-winded)

  1. Fresh download/install WoW 8.3, PTR, Beta, and Classic on new pc a few weeks back from Battle.net Launcher, then copied my WTF and interface folders over from old computer.
  2. Played game on new pc during 8.3, got persistent green spinner “Game Data is Being Downloaded” and frame hitching, etc
  3. Scan & Repair downloads a few hundred MB, Issue comes back, “Game Data is Being Downloaded”
  4. Tried another scan and repair, same thing
  5. A Week or so later, I see this thread, rename \Data\ Folder and redownload wow retail only (still during 8.3) and tell launcher to never automatically install updates
  6. Restart WoW and Issue goes away, play for a couple weeks with great framerate and no green spinner
  7. October 13, 9.0.1 hits so I swap to the old \Data\ Folder and rename the working one in case I don’t have to redownload 20GB (or more), downloads a few hundred MB, says it’s finished
  8. Start up game, “Game Data is being Downloaded”
  9. Scan and repair, same thing yet again
  10. Uninstall wow beta and PTR, scan and repair, same thing
  11. Just now I swapped the Data folder back to the newer download that is wow retail only, and it downloaded 20ish GB patch data to get to 9.0.1.36230
  12. Issue is gone entirely, framerate is great and no green spinner. Here’s hoping it stays that way.

So if you do a fresh redownload, it should fix it, but you may want to hold off on the PTR/Beta just in case that is the issue.

Joining everyone else on reporting this issue after 9.0 prepatch.

I have been having the green circle “data is being downloaded” issue for about 2 weeks now and am disappointed that it is continuing after the prepatch launch.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling WoW as well as doing the scan and repair function, neither of these have fixed the issue.

This isn’t much of a fix is it? How can we trust software that corrupts itself out of nowhere and needs to be fully reinstalled?

That is not a proper answer or solution, there are users who uninstalled and installed as basic troubleshooting and it did not fixed their problem. Would you provide us with a proper solution for this issue done by your side?
