As a new player, one day I sat down and went to the website created an account and wanted to download the ESO gameā¦ my expectation coming from 15+ years of MMOs (wow, wildstar, rift, SWTOR, aion, guild wars 2 etc) was a simple buy + subā¦ I didnāt find that and after ~30 mins of reading couldnt find the answers or a content created guide to lead me down the pathā¦ so I decided not to engage with it.
Thatās unfortunate.
I mean, buying and subbing to the game is definitely simpler than half of what you listed.
Tis a shame, itās an amazing game.
It genuinely looks good, but I refuse to buy half the game and find out the rest is behind a paywallā¦ I accept that it is not what ESO does but they were not transparent about that which means they could (and may do so in the future).
Due to the ever growing hype I am going to try to push through the early FF14 levelling on a trial account (my wow sub runs out in 8 days) but until ESO brings out a GOTY edition or some way for me to get the entirety of the game (like wow gives away up to the previous xpac now right?)ā¦ I wont pick it up.

If you buy one of the newer expansions, youāll get the previous expansions as well.
So, looking at Steam now, the Blackwood expansion ($59.99 version) gives you the new expansion, all of the previous expansions and the base game. GoG often has sales for digital keys as well so you could find it cheaper.
Mind you, thatās five expansions and base game.

The fact that even in this one thread a poster above has said āyou donāt need a subā then followed it up with āto get the DLC story missions you need a subāā¦ really muddies the waters. I am not buying it or supporting a business model where that kind of shenanigans goes on. Wow is bad enough at hiding in game information and mechanics in 3rd party sites and wikisā¦ if the pricing information is also as hard to find I would give wow the flick too.

It comes free with your sub.
While youāre subbed you get monthly currency you can use to buy said dlc for use when your sub is inactive.
Thatās literally it lol.
Youāre holding on too hard to the dlc thing and ignoring the ridiculous amount of content you get from the buy to play model.
Consider the dlc a bonus for subbing.
The pricing info isnāt hard to find it is literally all on their site.
Buy to play gets you base and expansions, sub gets you more as a bonus for loyalty.
You lose no content by not subbing since the dlc has no bearing on the actual story or expansions at all.
Players flocking over to ff14 because of other reasons. Iām waiting to see what WoW evolution becomes, but if it continues the same route regardless of the situation. Iāll probably be leaving too. Iām not sure if we will ever see this game bloom properly.
