Paladin endgame

What are paladins like endgame when it comes to pvp, raids, 5 mans, etc? I keep seeing that they are 100% expected to be heal bots and/or buff bots when it comes to pve and the only viable spec in pvp is holy. Is this true? I want to make a defensive focused tank in both pve and pvp but I feel like I’m wasting my time.

They are healers

People often confuse “viable” with “optimal.”

Yes, as a Paladin, you’re most optimal position is as a healer. Your set bonuses, (aside from Judgment) all emphasize healing. They are arguably better healers than Priests, especially for PvP where your tankiness matters.

But Prot spec is perfectly viable for 5-mans, especially the Undead ones. It’s just not optimal. You also won’t be main tanking raids due to a lack of taunt and spell power tank gear, which is fine if you’re okay with that.

My advice is play what you want to have fun and find a guild who will let you. There are plenty. Or make your own.

Is a prot/holy or prot/Ret hybrid build viable in pvp and/or 5man pve?

You can either be carried as a Ret or Protection or play a Healer. This is the choice of all*(except warriors) hybrids.

It’s kind of one or the other.

For PvE you would want to go Prot/Holy for Consecration in the Holy tree. For PvP probably Prot/Ret for a Reck-bomb? Or you could go Prot/Holy and be a tanky healer, but it would be a completely different build than the PvE tanking build.

You’re going to be expected to heal usually. Unless you group with friends who are okay having you do other things. Paladin tanks are okay for some stuff but they’re never really viable for raid tanking because of bad itemization and lack of a taunt.

In pvp… you’re not going to have much fun playing a tank in pvp in vanilla.

Prot PVP is bad in classic pretty much period. EVEN for warriors. Paladins can do ok tanking in 5 mans, and can be decent offtanks in some raids situations. Most guilds seeking perfect optimization will force anything with a heal button to spam it. I flatly refuse to. I earned my spot as ret in Vanilla and beyond, I’ll do it again and haters can suck my holy horse’s hind end.

My experience as a pally in Vanilla was:

  1. Log into BG
  2. Find a warrior
  3. Follow warrior around
  4. Heal warrior, as needed
  5. Enjoy the show

Is this spec good for pvp…?

it’s mainly for pve - but it’s the same spec as deep ret for pvp - simply use Seal of Command with a slow 2hander there instead

Everyone will love you if you play Holy.

Everyone will want to replace you if you play Prot or Ret.

The choice is yours.

How ya’ll gonna watch all these 20 man groups and 55 groups downing Rag and Onyxia and think anything more than a pre-lobotomized condition is required to raid.

These are some false requirements ya’ll are comin up with.

“Pallies can’t raid”

smh

Ya’ll can’t math.

spelladin dps is apparently competitive but have fun farming a bag full of MCPs

How much 5 man “end game” content do you think there is? There is no M+ in classic, the end game is raiding. And prot/ret is not a viable raid build, you will be healing.

You heal a bit.

Replace Windfury Totem with Blessing of Wisdom, and your future will be clear young Paladin.
