Overwolf is a cancer we cannot allow in Wow

It’s just that I can’t see given how much innovation comes out of Israel that they wouldn’t have strong agreements with most of the West over IP, etc. I didn’t know that about their copyright law though.

I don’t use add-ons, so this doesn’t affect me at all. :upside_down_face:

Its not so much where the company is located, but WHERE they do business. So really Blizzard could in theory challenge them in any country where the service is provided to find a more favorable court.

So they could have a case in the US as they would be doing business in the United States.

Wouldn’t it be amusing if Blizzard suddenly decided to host all the WoW add-ons…

Oh well looks like I’ll be dropping Twitch too when this change happens. I can not stand ads! I get that some games live off of them, but the minute I get an ad in WOW I’m done! I pay way too much money to play this game to have to deal with ads. Hell its dumb enough that people log into a fantasy world to debate real life…SMH!

It’s okay.

Overwolf is dying out on their own.

There won’t be in game ads. :man_facepalming:t2:

Proof.

My journey to this thread began when I started getting “no permission” popup (Administrator’s Permission) windows on my extraction attempts for the Questie addon, which said popups did not happen before 3 days ago (and I have been using Questie for 2 months). One of the authors, Eatyafood, replied with a link to Overwolf. I went to and read through the Terms of Use. Then I got more curious about the company, read the Wikipedia article, and a Forbe’s article “Should You Use CurseForge?” that said the company’s reputation is mixed, then clicked on a link from my search engine and now I am here. So after reading through about 10 replies or so I am now reluctant to download Overwolf . I do not mind paying a small/reasonable fee to any addon/mod authors for their work if asked for on any addon I use in my gaming, but I definitely am not willing to risk my gaming laptop by opening it up to any malware. For the time being, I will read more about the company and not download Overwatch.

Update: I just this moment tried to update Carbonite, same thing happened, and I have been using Carbonite for years. Does this mean all my addons are going to need “Administrator Permission” to use?? I am not liking this!

No addon should EVER need “Administrator Permission” it is likely you have another issue causing this.

As for the CurseForge app from Overwolf I’ve been using it since the first day of the open Alpha with zero problems.

I’ve been around for a pretty long time on this game. Speaking from experience (of both playtime and having used Overwolf in the past), I can tell you that it has indeed been known to infect people’s PCS with malware. While I can’t attest as to whether or not it still does so, I can confirm that it has done so in the past.

CurseForge is handy, but Addons existed before CurseForge.

If Overwolf makes a new CurseForge, one more than likely stealing my personal information, I will simply go back to doing things manually or use another add-on manager app if one comes out.

Overwolf’s behavior reminds me of how WalMart acts: they changed everything in the marketplace by flipping the business model, which is now the industry standard. Used to be production companies determined the pricing of their product. WalMart brings the manufacturers to their headquarters in Little rock, Arkansas and basically arm twists them into accepting prices in WalMart stores below what it costs to make an item, at a loss to the manufacturers. This harmed many manufacturing companies to the extent that companies like Rubbermaid had to shut down one of their manufacturing plants in Illinois (if I remember correctly) causing a major job loss. They also do not want competition, which is why they target smaller stores for extinction. That, along with the fact I am very familiar with WalMart corporate culture, having once worked at a WM store, is why I refuse to shop at WM or SC stores. The more I read about Overwolf, the less I like what is happening.

Everything CurseForge is already Overwolf. And the whole “stealing my personal information” is just ridiculous.

They’ve never stopped me from using adblocker and they won’t stop me from using third party addon managers.

Why’s it ridiculous? A company with a bad reputation for creating bloatware (which is one of the nicest, most neutral things I can say about it) decides to take a product that they acquired that already works great and either scrap it or revamp it for something that can’t really work better… but differently.

No thanks. I don’t trust it.

I am wondering though, since Overwolf is based in Israel, what International Law governing online business or Internet activity, if any, would apply to the situation?

What is it you think they would try to steal?? As far as bloatware Twitch had more.

Also what product are you talking about?

Just no. It was ugly electron pile of crapware, bloated. Just try wowup or ajour, now these are elegant and convinient.

Bloatware =/= malware. Trying to say Overwolf is malware is the same as saying Windows 10 is malware because it has Edge Browser built-in when you only want to use Chrome or Firefox.
