So is this just another angle that WoW is getting dismantled?
Including add ons that a lot of use to obtain certain things? Which are very important. I know more people use them for raiding etc. Just sayin’ tho. Or is this just more greed compiled on top of more greed?
I kinda seen that coming a mile away when I seen this posted on wowhead a couple months ago. Someone mentioned downloading from independent sites. Personally I am not comfortable with that. So I hope this gets addressed.
Anything adding an ad filled overlay is NOT getting my support.
Especially one that complains if it’s closed. I want to run it to update and then close it with NO background processes. None. This would hit their data collection so it’s be a no go.
A program that you can’t shut off completely is a virus as far as I’m concerned.
I understand where your coming from that Overwolf is restricting the thrid party’s mod manager’s to utilize curseforge, and that is an anti-gamer thing to do, as well just trying to monopolize on the… mod manager market i guess…
But can i be honest here? i’m just not that upset at this.
My only solution to those manager using people is to teach them how to manually install them.
it’s really not that difficult. Tedious sure, but it’s not difficult, especially since you can select all the zip/rar files atferwards, plop them in your addon’s folder, right click extract here and delete the rar files atferwards. Infact i would agrue it’s better then just pressing a button to have it update for you, because you will be doing the process and ensuring everything is in place. As well teaching you how to install mods without a manager in general.
The installation part would actually be fairly easy to write a little script/app for — basically boils down to checking if the extracted folder contains addon files or if it’s a folder of folders and then copying the contents to your addons directory. Then the only tedious part would be downloading the addons, after which you drop the archive files onto your little script/app for it to do its magic.
only time i ever had issues with the installer for the twitch app was RIGHT after classic and it got confused between classic addons and retail addons lol.
You remember back when people used Horse drawn carriages? They are better than cars because of the added connection to the horses! Never mind the car is better in pretty much every other aspect, lets cling to this one point and forget all the benefits we ALREADY get by using cars. The horse-drawn carriage is better!
Ajour is the addon manager that I switched to. I like it so far and I want it to keep working. https://www.getajour.com/
I’m looking into a Ghostery subscription for total device ad and tracker blocking. https://www.ghostery.com/pricing/. I’m hoping that it’ll block ads from companies such as Overwolf. Ideally it won’t be needed and addon authors will make their apps available elsewhere so that I can continue to use Ajour.
Maybe it’s because i’ve been doing this for a good while now, but i have about 40 addons installed and i rarely needed a mod manager to update them. And the few times i did (Minion by the way), it kinda screwed up the updates. So i just stuck to manual installs/updating.
So have I, I run more addons than you, and blizz API updates force the need for updates all the time for me. Manual update is literal nightmare fuel to me, and as an IT person, I am MORE than capable of doing it all manually. I don’t, because it sucks, and telling people to do that also sucks.
