That’s… interesting.
That being said, if we take Ion at his word (the spirit, if not the technical phrasing), this simply isn’t currently planned. And I have been pleasantly surprised by how people are taking that.

To be clear, I don’t think that’s what they’re doing here.
But I do think that, in a cross-faction world, more factions are an interesting possibility. Especially narratively.
For example, it would be great to have the Pandaren break away from both factions, taking the lessons learned back to the turtle, but divesting themselves from the petty wars. Or we could have had the Horde boot out the Undead entirely due to Sylvanas. Or, as you state, we could bring in the so-called Mongrel Horde.
They could probably use platform mounts like HoTs.
Suffice it to say, they could make it happen if they really wanted to. And if the community would accept it. I can’t imagine the uproar on the forums if that new Dragonspawn player got a rare mount that he couldn’t ride.
In short, it’s technically possible, but I don’t think the players as a whole would tolerate them.
But what would be the point? Create a race that needs special means of travel when they have tons of unused bipedals that don’t require any of that?
For fun. Centaurs are a pretty cool race in fantasy. Sort of like playing Orisa in Overwatch.
Or like playing red xiii in final fantasy 7. Sometimes you just want something different.
I think the most major issue is that it removes a major reward factor that the developers use for the player. Mounts are a carrot that they use very often. It wouldn’t feel good to get that rare mount drop when you’ll never be able to use it.
I mean on my mechagnome I can’t use gloves, boots, bracers transmogs etc. If you opt in to play those races you opt out of certain stuff for the fantasy. I think the same with centaurs. They could have like pegasus versions or like dracthyrs a visage form to be more human for flight models too. And include platform mounts for the big forms.
Personally, I’d be all for it. I just don’t see Blizzard going for it. They’re always trying to protect players from themselves.
Didn’t stop orcs being playable.
I mean blizzard just decided to give us a dragon race. They solved the mount issue with visage form. I don’t see why centaurs can’t have a visage form too for stuff like flying.
(Edited it my first draft was overly unfair to the op I altered it to be less jerky, if you saw the first draft op sorry)
I saw the exact video.
I took not nearly as dramatic as you interpreted it.
No allied races right now we are just focusing on dracthry
That means what it means they are not thinking of anything beyond getting the game out.
Nothing unique there makes sense.
Ps I hate autocorrect
As was mentioned in another thread which was very interesting, he said no “Allied Races” are planned… nothing was mentioned about “Core” races….
Tuskarr still may be playable with a unique starting zone and everything, the whole core race experience, completely new skeleton/rig not borrowed from other races.
Ofcourse this is speculation by fans, but he choose specifically to say Allied Races…
So there still may be hope of further races to be added that’s not Allied, Especially going back to that old leak that accurately guessed Evokers, Dragonflight title and more, mentioned a further race was going to be added!.
To be entirely clear, he was specifically asked about Allied Races. And that leak mentioned a pre-order Allied Race, which is MIA.
Suffice it to say, I want more playable options. There is no better content in the game for me. But I also have to take what Ion is saying at face value. Even if there is some technicality of language to exploit here, any interpretation other than, “There are no Allied Races currently planned,” is simply not true to the spirit of what he is trying to convey here. And based upon that, I will express my disappointment.
Others may express that disappointment with sheer denial, and that’s fine, too. But, I do think that those people are simply delaying their disappointment. Moreover, can you think of one example where the “wait and see” mindset was actually vindicated?
More to the point, no matter how we express it, we ultimately all want more playable races: allied, core, or otherwise. They should be a regular feature. And our playable selection should be brought in line with the actual lore of our factions.
Because centaurs that transform to ride on a horse wouldn’t exactly be true to the centaur core fantasy. That core fantasy would have to be contorted to fit into the mold of gameplay requirements, and I doubt that would be worth the hassle.
It would be like adding a Bard class in WoW. Sure, it’s possible, but Bard is a support class and there is no dedicated support role in WoW. Yeah, you could force it to be DPS or heals, but it would no longer be true to the core fantasy of the class. In which case, you may as well not even add it in the first place.
Bard can be a healer/with damage boosting. Doesn’t have to be just buffs. Since if you think about it healers are already supporting there team. Healing with music magic and dealing damage with it would be nice, bard’s fantasy is in it’s song’s and telling stories.
An example of this could be Sona from League of legends, and Lucio from Overwatch. He heals and speed boosts his team. So does Sona.
A centaur could simply have a cultural ritual to maybe turn into something else for flight. Or the use of magic. Which is enough justification for anything in wow. Magic. A centaur getting wings and turning into a pegasus centaur or eagle hybrid could be feasible. Turning there body into an elemental form like lightning/wind hybrid to fly would also be nice.
Like I said, it’s possible. But if you need to contort and compromise on the core fantasy of the race to that degree… why not put that effort into implementing something that isn’t compromised?
Again, I would love to see playable Centaurs, Dragonspawn, Naga, and other races that stretch the definition of “humanoid.” I just don’t see Blizzard adding races they know would be compromised from the outset.
Well that’s a bummer but not totally unexpected since they’ve decided to add a new race already. I got plenty on the old wishlist though for when they add them again. Though it seems like from Ion’s hedging that we may see them later in the expansion.
Meh to Mechagnomes already do that. They don’t wear boots, gloves, wrists, half of pants for mogs.
For me that is a similar situation. And we see with dracthyr they have some similar limitations. But they made up for it with customization.
Blizzard for bard also made there versions of it in other games like Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm. ETC is like a bard tank. Blizz’s version of stuff could be fun. Etc was a nice bard tank that healed allies and buffed nearby minions. A bard class could be simlar in WoW.
Wow already has alcoholics as a class/spec lol.
I made a thread on the topic some time ago…
Ultimately, I think we failed the test. Or Blizzard took our “diaper gnome” reaction the wrong way, and threw out the baby with the bathwater. Much like they did housing with garrisons.
