They’d have to designate support specs to make it viable and completely restructure the existing 1/1/3 party set up that has been ingrained in the game since WotLK.
It is unreasonable to expect that to happen, even if it would be for the best.
And do you honestly think that the current developers would make a class complex enough to “feel like playing music”?
I think they’d be able to actually do that if they wanted but I think it will be more likely that they’d fudge a healer or dps spec into feeling supporty without being a dedicated support.
When I say 'feel like" I mean “make the spec’s combos like a rythm game” instead of “you’re literally playing a flute.”
I just don’t think they want a support role at all.
As DPS, it’s easy to gauge your success based on how fast that boss dies.
Tanks are a bit more binary - is everything hitting you and you’re not dying? Good job!
Healers - did anyone die? Nope! Well done. And some minor meter play, as well.
How do you gauge your success as a support? It’s a lot more difficult to “game-ify” a support role. If you’re doing things right, you’ll just have other people that are very pleased with themselves. Maybe you popped a cooldown that resulted in that Rogue doing some crazy damage during a boost window, maybe you spotted a struggling healer and helped to top up their mana, maybe you even debuffed the boss before a tank buster and saved the tank… it’s a relatively thankless job, and WoW’s developers really detest that for whatever reason.
It’s not that I inherently dislike the other classes that are often offered… I just don’t think they fit with WoW’s current iteration. And yes, I do often push a pro-dragon agenda.
My read of the current team is that they really want to forge their own path. Odds are, whatever the next class is, whatever it is, it’s going to subvert all of our hopes and expectations, for better or worse.
I have to agree with this. The original concept of support was great. Being a paladin at that time it was cool to be able to do (to a lesser extent) what other roles do at the drop of a hat.
Tank died? Throw on your shield and grab threat. Lol… well, once Righteous Defense became a thing anyway. Before that it was Seal of Fury.
Healer died? Assuming you aren’t already the healer and, c’mon, everyone wanted to to heal, you can back off and throw out heals to get the group through.
DPS died? Well, do what you can, but it’s rather weak at times. Bursts were fun, but about it.
RIFT is a game that did the support role right, at least early on, idk about now. The fact that the dungeon queues required a Support role in the team was amazing. I wish we could get that here.
