FFXIV generally understands that it’s characters need to be appealing and barring that, at least interesting. Most of the characters don’t have a ton of depth but they’re at least two dimensional which is still greater than WoW’s tendency to make characters with zero dimensions to them.

They make games to stroke the ego of the developers, they don’t give a crap about shareholders. If they did, they wouldn’t have been bought out by another company. That is why they double>triple>quadruple down on stuff players hate, then when they do fix the problems, they never admit they were problems and either say the crappy feature was meant to end at that time or suggest we weren’t ready for their brilliance.

I’m sure they’ve still got good writers on the team somewhere, they just chose the wrong ones to take over for the Endwalker patches/Dawntrail.
My understanding is there are two main writers for Dawntrail that each wrote a different half of the expansion. One’s previous work on FF14 includes a bunch of minor storylines and job quests for past expansions, the vast majority of which were forgettable with no standouts like Ishikawa’s past work on the Azim Steppe or Dark Knight/Rogue quests. And the other writer’s only non-FF14 writing credits are for a yuri visual novel series. I’ve got a list somewhere with the specific questlines they both worked on but I can’t find it at the moment.

It is this way in real life because there is a lot of historical baggage relating to women’s treatment and perception within society. This is a fantasy setting, which completely lacks that historical baggage. Your analogy is poor.

The new partnership with SBI might also be one of the reasons why the Endwalker post patches and Dawntrail hardly feel like Final Fantasy anymore. The difference is so drastic… I really had to push myself through the MSQ in Dawntrail because it reminded me more of Dora the Explorer than the awesome story you’re used to from that game. The post patches with the never-ending pity tour for Zero were already bad enough. Not to mention how cliché and predictable everything has become. I really hope they manage to turn things around and bring the quality back up.

Of course Blackrock and ESG are going to be a massive influence, but the truth is that most game devs LOVE pushing their political fetishes onto everyone.
