These are all excellent points and extremely valid criticism of the new system. It’s half-baked and alienating.
Except, no. Your empowered bonus would be gone too. You’d drop to 4 stars.
I didn’t like the old one, but I HATE the new one.
I was okay with the old torghast on live. It was a neutered version compared to where it was in beta.
The new “improved” torghast is just worse from my view. At least there are rewards but everything else just drags the entire experience down.
I liked chilling and going at my own pace as a Rogue. New torghast doesn’t respect that class fantasy.
I am not a warrior charging in or a Paladin with bubbles. I am a Rogue that needs planning, restealth and waiting for CDs.
why would that be the case?
i think i sorta like new torghast.
i am a super casual player.
i just ignore the timer, you can still make progress in grinding out the tower knowledge with less than perfect runs, and the more you get, the easier your next runs get.
the drops and the new cosmetics are an added fun thing to try for and exactly what i wanted to help replayability
casuals also have other means to get cinders too so you dont really need to stress too much about getting them all from torghast. you can still progress to upgrading your legendaries, but it will be slower, and frankly thats fine because the patch cadence is so slow that 9.2 might be out around christmas
I agree completely with OP, the scoring system is terrible. I just saw a perfect example of how it can lead to events that are completely counter to the gameplay that makes Roguelike games fun.
In my last run, I got an anima cell near the start of floor 4 that only gave me one power choice. It was a power I had already chosen previously, so I had two choices: take the duplicate power and lose 15 bonus points, or never take another anima power for the rest of the run. I chose not to take any more powers and ended up passing by three more anima cells. As it turns out, not taking any anima powers was the correct choice, because I finished with a score of 203. If I had taken the power I would’ve dropped from 5 gems down to 4.
It is absolutely absurd that the scoring system as it is can lead to situations where not taking anima powers is the objectively correct gameplay choice.
I enjoyed Torghast before. I don’t run Mythic+ because I don’t like timers. I find that hurry, hurry, hurry mentality to be unfun.
I liked being able to solo Torghast and know that I could go to the bathroom. I could answer to phone or speak to my husband when he came in the room.
I hadn’t played in awhile so I decided to do a layer 7 run yesterday. (I have cleared layer 8 before). I got a 100% completion bonus. 3 stars. I tried to use Empowered. I only got a couple of points for time. I got a few of the random bonus things. I just went through and methodically killed everything and certainly tried to get all the urns (I did that).
It was very unfun to complete it 100%, not having any problem with the boss, not coming close to dying. And, it said I wasn’t could enough to go to layer 8. But – in reality – I can clear layer 8 because I have done so.
Something that was once fun for me is now stressful. And, as someone who could routinely progress to the next layer, now I can’t do it easily unless I try to play in an unfair way.
Oh there was one run I thought I might get the bonus for having over 500 phantasma. I had carefully saved it as I didn’t think I needed to buy anything more to kill the boss. I was correct. Of course, I had to torment where the treasure guy randomly spawns to steal my phantasma so, of course, he spawned while I was killed the boss and I couldn’t kill him in the time period so I didn’t get the bonus anyway…
Congrats on your run, but you could not have gotten 5 stars if you were truly taking your time or undergeared.
Empowerment Bonus, Hunter, Daredevil, and Executioner are all time-sensitive.
Umm, no you can’t. You would need some of the time-sensitive bonuses, or to be extremely lucky with what the 3 randomly generated floors contain. Defenders of the 9.1 Torghast timer just keep disproving their own point once they post screenshots of their score breakdowns.
This is absolute garbage. I thought I went at a good pace, but only got 3 stars (as heals). The entire concept of requiring a time for torghast runs is so horrible it is beyond belief, and it is embarrassing beyond there are folks here defending it.
Fyi - until this garbage patch, I have literally never once missed a single week of max layers of torghast, and I completed Twisting Corridors floor 8 the first week possible. I cannot belive how terrible this 9.1 system is. Honestly it makes me want to not even attempt to upgrade legendaries and just raid log.
They require you to kill things quickly. They do not require you to not AFK or to sprint through every floor doing mass pulls like a sweaty gogogo esports elitist.
You are contradicting yourself. As a general rule, you do in fact need to beat the timer in various ways to get a flawless score.
Do you think that the people who don’t like the timer are going to AFK at the entrance for 10 minutes and then all of a sudden do an uber pull and speed clear the entire floor in their overpowered gear? Some players are going to need to do small pulls, and can only handle one elite at a time.
Admit that you like the new Torghast. Admit that you like the timer. That is fine. But you can’t claim in good faith that the timer doesn’t matter, or that it is feasible to get 200 points while taking your time.
people here have literally already posted 200 point runs with like 2 points from time
I intentionally AFK’d 20 min on floor 5 on that run. /shrug
That would have been 4 stars without Executioner, Daredevil, and Empowered Bonus, which are all timer-related. Thank you for proving my point again.
I agree that timer just ruins it. Can I just bloody well enjoy my meal - why do they consistently insist I have to shove everything down my throat as fast as possible and then act like we’re ingrates because we didn’t enjoy the food.
GET RID OF THE STUPID TIMERS!!!
I don’t really understand why everyone is up on the timer, considering you can just do torghast as normal and get all the soul ash/cinders you need out of it and completely ignore the scoring system at the same time. The only thing the scoring system locks is the higher layers and some cosmetics behind the scoring.
Furthermore, if you really want to be technical about the bonuses, daredevil isn’t gated by dps like executioner is, since you could take as long as you want to dps down both elites evenly. Overall dps doesn’t matter for that bonus, just that they both die within 10 seconds of each other. Considering I got a 220 with daredevil ignoring time, that means 210 pts overall, still a flawless run, which still means you can take as long as you want.
lol, you just want to be stubborn and that’s fine. If you hate it just say that, but don’t say this is a barrier to players because of a timer.
Executioner - Floor 5 boss killed in under 40 seconds
This is a DPS check and has nothing to do with the time component of your score. It’s a bonus objective that can be obtained if you choose to pickup epic anima powers and stack ones that are good for you. Some of the bonuses seem mutually exclusive but this one is not related to getting a good time.
Daredevil - Defeat 2 Elites within 10 seconds of each other
This is a coordination thing. It’s not a DPS check. It has nothing to do with the time component of your score. You just have to slowly DPS down two elites until they are both under 5% health , kill one, then kill the other within 10 sec. If you’re a DPS class with good cleave (shadow priest?) you probably get this bonus objective without even thinking about it. If I coordinate and take my time I can do this on my holy priest. So no, this one is NOT related to getting a good time. 97% of your timer score is already determined by the time you reach Floor 5.
Empowered Bonus - This isn’t explained well on wowhead (and of course Blizz tells us nothing). But this is a separate line item from the time portion of the score. It seems to be that it’s based on doing stuff after you hit the extra-action button. You could just pop the button after you clear the trash in an area and break a bunch of urns in rapid succession. I did say rapid there so I’ll give you some point that this one is “go fast while using it,” but it’s not important. I only got +13 for this and you’re complaining it’s a timer-related barrier to success. I could have gotten ZERO for Empowerment and still 5-gemmed that run with a 204 score.
