Hozen would be quite easy to fit in lore-wise as well. They already stand with the horde, and if people don’t like the fact that they are short lived and not very bright you can make the playable ones a new group of Hozen that the Monkey King has “uplifted” for a lack of a better term. Much like how he got a group of them to grow wings, and refuses to tell us how.
So, this one is just me here, but I’ll just focus on two if most the lead ups are potentially true as to what might happen with the whole ‘The Light, it Burns!’ expansion.
For the Horde…
Ogres
This one is less of a new surprise group, more mixing elements we already have received to explain how it crops up. Ogres who came over with the Mag’har during the evacuation of Draenor find there are, in fact, benefits to not being stuck under the orcish boot. An ambitious ogre Magister decides to, while the Horde as a whole is occupied with the Fourth War and Shadowlands, moves to Dustwallow Marsh to see these ‘Stonemaul’ who are a part of the Horde.
Mortified to see how far his main timeline kin have fallen, he (and those who came with him) get to work drilling the locals and get the used to living in more than just caves and holes, starting to build what the magister deems an ‘acceptable’ town. After the shadowlands, the quest to unlock them involves this Magister sending word to Baine, requesting a seat on the council to represent Ogrekind. After questline to figure out how that occurs, most questing involving ogres ends up being the magister’s underlings acting on orders to ‘Consolidate’ their people and bring them back to heel (in a Rome-esque manner). The primary climax of the storyline being something in Feralas at Diremaul.
For the Alliance…
Arrakoa
So, lets be real here, they still lived on Draenor too and unlike ogres, we at least had male and female models for them. While this wont be quite as set as the ogres, their story of joining the Alliance would be, in part, as refugees whenever Yrel does a thing. They would be the last of the not subjugated Arrakoa from the world, forced to as an entire peoples find a new home. Storywise, their recruitment would involve the Alliance thinking their flock moving into Duskwood is some sort of invasion, only for the player to begin finding they’re all refugees.
From there, recruitment is largely the Alliance trying to figure out how to best help them, only for the Worgen, with a recently reclaimed Gilneas, to extend the hand to help settle the majority of them while they adjust to Azeroth. From there, most quests involving Arrakoa would be them adjusting to the new planet, people they might have openly clashed with in WoD, and even the possible establishment of their own settlement.
There are multiple instances in the game in which Mushrooms (and beings made of mushrooms) are portrayed as sentient beings.
See: Sporregar, Sporeloks, Sporelings (Both in BC and in WoD), Sporeling Miners (Ashran + Slag Mines), Boss: Fungarion Furor, Q: Spores and Losers, Marasmius and Mushroomancer is a title.
Playable mushrooms please.
I want Gilgoblins to be their own race because GOBLIN DRUIDS.
They are close to nature and could use the Zandalari forms – turtle for aquatic gob tank!
I’d be so happy if we had that and Goblins got monks, too.
PS: I’m a Goblin now.
It wouldn’t be too far out there that they were with the trolls (when they discovered the Well) just long enough to turn into night elves before returning to the underground. From there, changed a bit more.
Lohkash your scenario for Arrakoa is honestly one of the best ones I’ve seen. I think that’s actually pretty unique and would be such a cool plot point.
For the Mushroom people I know there’s been a group of them that have been recurring in every expansion since WoD. They could be a neat neutral race!
I like the idea of gargoyles. Not sure how that could be implemented but it would be a cool thing to play as.
One thing I’ve noticed is the difficulty of races for the Alliance.
The more beastial we go, the more dethatched we have to make the allegiance for the Allied race to make it work. Sethrak is a popular choice, but is defeated by the relevance of the plot between Horde and them. Arrakoa are a neat choice, but are defined by an empire of tyrannical views. Their flightful people and the decrepit, flightless selves are in an eternal struggle of class.
And the Alliance are in this strange form of never going too far from humanoid themes. The Horde is accepting of beasts as they often invite the underdog or the unwanted into their fold. While the Alliance retains this sort of “homogenized” grouping. Even the Worgens are just cursed humans in the end result. We have to look at some different ways to take the Alliance themes and make it a difficult trust, but a needed one.
I propose Naga. Though cursed elves, they are some of the most ancient race in Azeroth. They have a high faith in Azshara, N’zoth, and have blooded history across Azeroth. But the primary reason I offer this is the defeat of Queen Azshara can shake the faith of the Nazjatar, and the loss of N’zoth can further drive the people to revolt and seek to mend their former hatreds.
The Night Elves could make this shaky trust in the Naga, who have ties to all seas. Kul Tirans and Night Elves could work alongside these beasts while realizing they deal with an enemy who owes allegiance to a greater, deadly force. Their trust can only go so far.
I’d focus on adding races that are already in the factions first. So I’d add:
Alliance: Broken, Jinyu/Ankoan, Furbolgs. Also frostborn dwarf customization for dwarves, and regular hair colors for void elves to allow for high elves.
Horde: Ogres, Hozen, Gilgoblins. Also, Taunka customization for tauren, as well as a few green skin tones for trolls so they can be the revantusk forest trolls.
New races for the factions:
Alliance: Arrakoa, Ethereals, Vrykul.
Horde: Sethrak, Mok’nathal, Mogu
Neutral/Could go either way: Saurok, Tuskarr, Mantid, Saberon
Pipedream: The gargoyles from shadowlands, but I heavily doubt we will get anything from the shadowlands.
Ooh! Ohh! I want those mushroom guys for both sides! With cross faction chat, but it all translates to various audible screaming!
AAAAAAAYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHH!
Alright, so this might be a relatively unpopular opinion: but I want Grummles. Just imagine all the trader based RP that would come around with them. And you can’t seriously tell me that the Grummles wouldn’t have expanded to the rest of the world either. I’d say make them neutral, like the Pandaren, and let them pick their faction.
Perhaps centaurs, mogu, and furbolgs would also be quite interesting - along with the likes of the Tol’vir and Naga, though the issue with a lot of those races I listed is that they’re not generic two legged models and that would be a lot of work for Blizz. That and we don’t have a ton of lore reason for them to suddenly want to sign on with the Horde or Alliance.
Though an interesting thought that just came to me is that maybe it would be curious to say that after the events of the last expansion, the Alliance got the Tol’vir as an allied race while the Horde got the Mogu, saying that each side contributed more to the defense of their particular region for whatever reason. Maybe that’s just me being a fan of those particular races, but I think that’d be well neat.
While most of those could work and I’d love to see them as playable, I doubt centaurs would. If I remember correctly didn’t they hunt the Tauren for sport, only to be stopped by the orcs and trolls? I can’t see that gap ever being mended. The usage of centaur skin rugs might turn them away as well.
just make all races playable :))
Why limit ourselves, gang? This is supposed to be the WORLD of Warcraft. Not a few provinces of Warcraft. Furbolgs, Jinyu, Taunka, Satyr, don’t forget the Ramkahen down in Uldum…Gnolls, Dryads, Nerubians, Wyrmkin, I dont careeee. Throw em all in. And for goodness sake can I please make a male Draenei that is thin like Velen and isn’t built like a brick sh@t house?!?
I like the Tol’vir and Centaur but I don’t think they could work with the 4 leg thing. Mounts couldn’t work for them and I feel like armor would be a nightmare to model. At least with Naga their tails can just wrap around the mount and they don’t need leg and feet armor like Mechagnomes.
I do like the Mogu for the fact they’d be relatively easy to implement. They share the same model as Draenei and they have females already (the two bosses from ToT). Just add some customization options to them and they’d be good to go.
Eredar being tolerated by the Lightforged/Draenei and Fel Orcs being tolerated and not forcibly cured/purged by the Warsong would be grounds for civil war. I’m game.
That’s entirely fair, and not something I’d considered when I talked about the Centaur, but that’s a good point. And when it comes to what Auhgag said, that’s fair with the four legs. I hate that you’re right, I really do, but you are. Its why its just a pipe dream, but god would it be a really cool thing to have done and to see. Make the four legged races their own racial mounts that we can hop onto the back of like druid travel form.
I have so many opinions on this.
First off, I think Allied Races are fine as is. The races are culturally distinct, history is different, etc. The only exception would be lightforged which is a process anyone can do.
Allied races are just races without a starting experience- which i think is great for these races similar to main ones, but distinct enough themselves to be considered more than mere customization. Mainstream races can be used for very unique races.
Id like to start with races already in each faction.
Horde: Drogbar, Hozen, Ogres, Taunka, Sanlayn, Forsaken Elves
Alliance: Jinyu, Frostborne Dwarves, Broken, High Elves
There may be some im forgetting but I’m in a rush to write this. I think its a disservice to add many of these to customization. They miss out on so much lore and story.
I will post other races i think make sense storywise at a later point
With Jinyu I think it would be better if they were meshed together with Ankoan. They’re extremely similar but the Ankoan have some unique looks that I think would be cool for players to have.
Loxodon.
I don’t care how just get it done.
