Well, I would count 36-38% Vers. as a “special gear set”, as it takes a lot of time and good RNG to be able to build a set with that much Vers. on short notice, especially considering that a lot of older gear couldn’t even have Vers as a stat.
But you are exactly right about Vers. being the key for some of the challenges for the defensive benefit, especially for certain specs. I was only able to finish the Feltotem challenge by stacking Vers. and Leech, and using tank trinkets and enchants from old expacs, because the unavoidable damage was too high to heal or self-sustain through, even if I interrupted attacks and dodged AoE appropriately.
This goes back to my argument that the only issue with these challenges is the numerical tuning. One-shot mechanics are fine, but unavoidable damage sources should not be killing you in seconds when you have so much else to worry about.
They reallly bungled the rollout for sure (incompetence).
This is a much better way to do it the next time they do something like this… to keep most casual players happy:
all players scaled to a standard “template” of stats/secondaries inside the instance
whatever borrowed power (Legion leggos, Legion talent tree, Artifact traits, etc) was relevant to that expansion is “enabled” inside the instance/encounter only
all cheese-y TW gems, old-expac trinkets, and OP legacy items (ex: Unbridled Potion) just disabled altogether inside the instance
Drums still allowed, since not all classes have lust
^ This way the challenges/scenarios would be about skill and doing mechanics properly rather than a “pay 2 win” model with DPS checks so tight you “need” those aforementioned TW sets, TW sockets, or cheese-y trinkets just to have a decent chance.
I also think the mage tower is REALLY poorly done, and I’d love for it to be better. Anyone I’ve talked to about it has heard nothing but me saying how terrible and unfun it is.
The only thing I was commenting on from the very start is this whole attitude of “give me or I unsub!!!” Those kinds of ultimatums are childish and pathetic. There’s a difference between wanting something to be better and saying so vs. that whiny childish mentality that everyone who isn’t 12 should have grown out of.
With that said, making old content relevant is a great thing for the game and they’ve done it, but their complete silence on that very fact really ruined this.
Nowhere during PTR, up to release, did Blizzard ever mention the fact they want old stuff to be relevant. Not until a developer note attached to a hotfix note.
This should’ve been a stupidly easy win for them. “We’re making old content relevant again by letting you optimize your strategy through old-world gems, recipes, enchants, etc.” would’ve been massively amazing.
Instead we got silence and a mess that was nearly impossible to do with, as they called it, “normalized” power and difficulty. None of it made sense and it was a mess.
Why would they need to when players have been making Timewalking sets since the inception of that content? There are dozens of guides that have BIS lists for every spec in the game.
Me either, besides this rehashed 9.1.5 MT I’ve never touched timewalking stuff… like literally ever
I’ve never even done a single “complete 5 Timewalking dungeons” quest.
I’m a current expac-only player that mostly vendors off or deletes old gear I don’t need anymore - and I imagine I’m in the MAJORITY of players since bag space is a thing and alot of gear is “soulbound” so it’s not like you can just mail it off to your bank alt for proper long-term storage.
TW sets historically take you from a “lol” power to “AHAHAHALMFAO” power. They were entirely unnecessary, especially for the casual player, but hey they made things quicker for sure.
With MT, they’ll take you from a “I’m so sick and tired of bashing my head for days getting nowhere” to “lol” power and are almost mandatory at this point.
God, BoP can die in a fire for gear. Fine for quest rewards, but that’s all it should be for, quest rewards and maybe ‘attuned’ artifact weapon things, but like…yeah…nah, BoP can take a long dive off a short pier into a sand bank
Yes they’re common and something well known by the community.
You have every iteration from players in full BIS TW’ing sets to those who just used things like old Lego’s, Azerite pieces, the Heart neck or just some random epic piece that you enjoyed back in the day.
This isn’t an elitist thing.
Why would Blizz need to mention something most players knew?
I honestly didn’t know about it because I typically just play to have fun/a good time, sometimes that means pushing myself a bit harder than normal, other’s it means just lmaostomping old dungeons for rep
So you’re talking about two different things. You said sets in your earlier post, and now you’re talking about using individual pieces. That’s a big difference.
Using individual pieces is not uncommon, but using sets is, especially ones that are gemmed and enchanted to the moon. Up until TW MT that is.
Off-topic - when’s the last time you went into a TW dungeon with food or flask, something that’s pretty much a necessity with TW MT?
LOL stop being so myopic. A set doesn’t have to mean every piece.
The idea of using old gear has been a common thing since the start of TW’ing so the idea that Blizz should have told everyone about the practice is ludicrous.
Do you use Flasks in high key Legion Timewalking? Legion M+ and the Mage Tower are NOT the same as your usual Timewalking Dungeons. Are you really that obtuse to think otherwise?
We need templates for this fiasco of the tower.
Good that they nerfed things, def. felt it.
From a person that done lot of original MT on different classes current rewards aren’t enough for time spent and frustration that MT gives . I will do it on prob my 3 healers and be done with it.
Do I want a mount yes but do I want to do tanking challenge @@@@@ no.
Its like DK in specific gear with all cooldowns as UH can get Agatha to 80% on opener. I in my gear max can do 92%. Kind of BS
Well time to update I suppose. After taking an hour away from the game I came back and beat the boomkin challenge after another 10 attempts so yay me lol. I still think it’s overtuned as all get out. I think nerfing the hands health by 20% or so should make the encounter more manageable while still keeping all the components of the challenge present. I’m really debating whether to even start the bear challenge or just wait until Blizz just nerfs it again. Anywho, good luck to everyone still doing the Mage Tower, my sympathies are with you
Show me the news post / release notes / blizzard preview where they ever said that was the intention of timewalking. If you actually look into it, the intention was to let players either re-visit old content or let new players who never got a chance to experience it the first time around experience it first hand. No where do they state that players need to farm BiS timewalking sets to do it (nor was it their intent).
