that’s probably a good choice.
there’s no reason to spend real world money on things which can be obtained simply by playing the game.

Sure. That’s true. There’s also no need for heirlooms at max-level. There’s also no need to spend time in a game other than for enjoyment 
I tanked a couple of Cata instances, and they were actually pretty difficult. That was a lot of fun, as they are some of my favorite instances in the game, and it was nice to see that they are tuned high enough to not be a walk in the park.
Anyway, I hope the OP’s concerns are resolved.
