Mount Farming, How Many Tries?

I remember farming Solar Spirehawk, and got it on like my 7th kill.

Then I wondered why I saw no one else riding one, only to find out it was a 0.01% drop chance instead of a 1% chance.

The finally buffed the drop rate, to 1% like most other mounts.

Jesus Christ, man.

If I had known the drop rate was THAT low, I would have left Rukhmar alone lol.

I only really go after mounts if there’s other stuff in the dungeon/raid I’m also farming, like mogs.

I already have several favorite mounts, so I rarely ever would go out of my way to get more.

Solar Spirehawk is still my ‘best/rarest’ flying mount, still glad to have it, but I don’t like to play just to play for RNG’s sake. The gameplay loop of doing old content isn’t what I’d call engaging, lol.

It’s still just as rare as my ZG tiger, with about 2% of the playerbase having one.

While technically true, I think you know full well the way I was using that word. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, I would like to say this isn’t just me being whiney. I already have most raid/dungeon drop mounts. I just genuinely think it’d be a good change for the collector community since most people don’t find running ICC heroic “fun” when they get literally nothing out of it anymore.

It would feel more “worth it” if there was a light at the end of the tunnel you could clearly see. Even if that light was 300 runs away.

1% drop rate is 1% no matter how many times you do it.
There isn’t any mechanic to increase your odds.
It’s 1% every time.

I’ve gotten several 1% mounts on less than 10 tries.
Others have been farming those mounts for years.
One player I read here on the forums has been farming invincible for 15 years now.

Just like flipping a quarter, it’s a 50% chance for tails no matter how many times you flip the coin.

I disagree, I don’t think the collecting community wants this.

People that collect like the chase or we wouldn’t be doing it.

And me lol.

My wee gnomish self yells at Arthas every week to give me his stupid pony… Lenny Bruce would blush at what I’ve said over the years.

Fair enough. Both sides of this are valid, honestly. One favors random chaos and the other favors order and an eventual end. Chaos is more fun to some, for sure.

For sure. But I also think there’s a point where it gets ridiculous and disheartening. Final Fantasy put a system in place to fix this, and people seem to like it.

But again, I’m not saying you’re wrong. But I don’t think the people who are in favor of bad luck protection are wrong either (especially the ones who are still willing to keep the attempts high, and aren’t just trying to get things easily handed to them).

Supposedly 1% drop chance.
Best guess, in the 90’s based off my 1% mounts collected.
I have a few that were in less than 20 runs, and others over 300.

The luckiest I have been was about 2 weeks ago when I did back to back LFR runs and got both the Abyss Worm and G.M.O.D

Worst were the World Bosses, until they drastically upped the drop rate, Shackled Ur’zul and Mimron’s Head. Those attempts were in the hundreds for each of them.

Key to keep your sanity in mount farming is never hope it drops. One can handle only soo much disappointment. Have Youtube playing something in the background as a slight distraction.

For me it was throwing a very public fit. Invincible, my last paragon mount, my last garrison invasion mount, my last island expedition mount, Blazing Drake.

For each one I stormed into my husband’s office and said I was done, completely done, eff those mounts, I’m sick of it, etc etc then once I got that off my chest, they dropped almost immediately after.

It probably won’t work anymore now that I figured out the pattern

I don’t count and i don’t farm stuff every week. Sometimes i just have mood to do some old content

The only rare mount i have is Rivendare horse

I have a guildmate that spent over 3 yrs trying for the Green Proto drake mount from the egg…he finally broke down and brought the one he has now off the BMAH when it showed up there…

Use alts.

Lots and lots of alts.

The best guess is there is no best guess. RNG is RNG. Good luck.

I wish there was a way to know, but like many have said RNG is RNG. way back in Cata I was leveling my first alliance character, got a dungeon pop, was VP, got DCed half way into it, was like “eh i’ll just go to bed” but reconnected quickly…the drake of the north wind dropped. My friend barely got it yesterday, where he gets to ride on the headless horseman mount…where I don’t have it…its NEVER dropped for me. Though I havent done that many Hallows End events in recent years. its still funny to think about.

another funny one I like to think about is, back in Wrath not classic, my GF at the time was also playing WoW and got TWO of the green protodrakes to hatch from those eggs from the rep grind there. I opened so many of those things on my toons, never got one. best part is the second one she got, i opened it.

It’s random… Ashes took me just over two weeks running about 20 characters. Rivendare’s Deathcharger about a week. The white hawkstrider, on my 3rd run.

Invincible? I still can’t see it on over 60+ characters, about 5 runs each. I may not see it in 10 runs or 20+++ runs on characters that can easily solo it. I may never get it, but its great for transmogs.:joy:

I wanna say it took me 23 months because I got exalted with them pretty fast and only one of those months was the 3 day eggs.

I have no idea why I was so unlucky with that guy.

I got fairly lucky with that one if memory serves me right. It was about…4-5 eggs I think? Been awhile.

That isn’t at all how statistics and probability work. You have an equal chance every time. Running it 50 times or 1000 times doesn’t change the odds. It’s certainly more likely that someone who’s tried 1000 times has received it but your chances don’t go up the more you try.

If you have a 200 sided die how many rolls will you need to roll a 1? Could be 5 could be 5000.

Best mount rate drop I got was getting Reins of the Raven Lord on my third go. The worst drop rate I got was Invincible which took weekly run lasting about 6 years total (did it on a single character by choice).

So anywhere from here to there imo.

My Invincible farming experience was only slightly worse, clocking in at 7 years. It was worth it though.

It was rough, never again, but getting that mount was personal. Glad you go it eventually!
