MMOs need to evolve

Unfortunately, the only evolution going on here is dumbing everything down slowly because “the pvp vendors are too hard to find”. (only one example)

I’m very aware of this. I actually play FF14. But it in no way shape or form has enough to draw a player like myself in. I play for character progression. Story is fine, but that’s a interactive movie at times. I don’t need 5 cutscenes in between every quest. It’s like pulling teeth getting through the MSQ. And the stupid thing is required.

Or people who don’t like staples/core components of mmos need to find a new genre to play in.

MMOs are fine as is. They don’t need to be changed because they don’t suit your tastes.

A fine way to kill an MMOrpg.
A fine, fine way.

I personnaly like the MSQ concept, sure there’s too big of lull between expansions content (50-60-70). But I feel the story should take that big of part in an mmorpg. And it felt very different than just mob grinding in wow so I understand people not understanding how to really react or enjoy that sort of content.

The trick is just to take it slow, like an episode at the time. And to take a break when you start getting bored. And I really liked that the game kinda forced you trought and didn’t offer free level boost that let you skip leveling, which is like welcome to the game now please don’t do most of its old content we don’t want you to see it or feel that you should do it.

MMOs are not fine, stop pretending it is. If it was fine or doing well we would have tons of MMOs to play right now. The only other MMO people bring up here is FFXIV and there’s nothing else. The genre itself has been in a steady decline. I don’t just care for WoW, I care for the whole genre itself. WoW needs a solid competitor so Blizzard can wake the hell up and put in some creativity and effort.

I do think WoW needs to start being a bit more creative and really pushing the box on their idea’s. Lately it’s all felt very, very safe.

Thing is, it’s hard to do a proper MMO now-a-days that isn’t automatically turned into a grind-fest, or littered with micro-transactions because the free fpshooter game with shiny cosmetics is eating that MMO alive 1000% over.

There are lots of mmos out there, you not liking them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. There are also several in development right now by some pretty big name companies.

People also mention ESO. We have New World, Ashes of Creation, and several others on their way.

It really hasn’t, companies have just begun to realize good mmos take time to develop and rushing them out the door will lead to disaster.

I don’t know how I got through those quests in between expansions. ARR was easlily the worst. In fact I’d say I despised it. Wow did this right imo. It put hundreds of stories across the world in the zones for me to discover and engage in. I remember younger me getting to westfall and solving a murder drenched in plot twists and secrets. I chose that. It wasn’t forced down my throat. I like having paths and choosing where to go. It makes the world feel big, like I’m some adventurer that’s part of the world and discovering it as it unfolds.

Now when I level new characters I try to go different ways so that I can experience new stories. I don’t need to be led around by the nostrils and forced story.

I also don’t think people understand that the MMO genre is out of the spotlight for now because people are shifting with the trends of the time.

I’m not saying you are wrong about wow, but I disagree that ffxiv is an example of success. It is no where near as popular as people think/claim.

Even if it’s dying wow is still king.

Because at this point it feels like you look at every thread and say “How can I tell everyone how great FFXIV is?”

Yes, people can enjoy and praise more than one game. You don’t seem to. When I see a Raelhorn post, I don’t exect any game other than FFXIV to be praised.

It’s been confirmed at more than 1.5M subs. So I don’t know how good it needs to be a sucess, but that’s pretty good for me. And yes wow is probably still king, but we don’t know anything about wow subs, but it’s definitly not at it’s best for wow.

There’s that too, but here is a list of at least 20 mmos that are either in development or about to release.

Whether they’re all good or not is a matter of opinion, but the genre is still alive and well.

Which is a fraction of wows last officially recorded sub count.

Ffxiv is a very niche mmo. No everyone likes the jrpg style. I guess my point was less ffxiv isn’t successful and more wow is still king.

I still play BDO, Tera and used to play BnS and FFXIV. I never said any where that I didn’t like any other MMOs. So stop assuming things. Apparently people here in GD white knight WoW and Blizzard so much that even if people ask for features from other MMOs, they’re ridiculed.

None are AAA and have no financial backing. They’re all crowd funded and we know how those end up. Ashes at this point seems to be a scam just like Star Citizen.

LOL where’s your evidence for these so called games in development? NONE of the big publishers like Microsoft, Sony, EA, Activision, Bethesda and Ubisoft have mmos in development

Possibly FF14 could have more subs than wow right now. the last official sub for wow are years ago lol. I’m just not pushing that far, but it’s a possibility. And FF14 is a very western mmo with jrpg roots.

Yup I don’t disagree, I just think some people don’t get that developing MMOs don’t happen at a flip of a switch and there are plenty of Companies who seemingly did not have the ‘‘formula’’ perfected to thrive. Too many fell because they relied heavily on micro transactions or combat felt bad or whatever.

Like you said, it takes time and for now, there really isn’t a list of MMO’s that seemingly do enough to bring in a bigger player base because ultimately the lot of people today look at free games, instant gratification, and stuff their favorite streamer plays probably.

10-15 years ago, it was all about WoW and the mmo-genre. Not so much now. I do find some upcoming one’s to be interesting. Don’t think though that I have it in me to commit to another MMO even if I quit this one. :stuck_out_tongue:

Blizzard tried turning their IP’s into Mobas - it failed.

You also can’t compare Mobas and Battle Royals to MMOs because those games are not persistent. Every time you start a new game, all the effort earned before means nothing because you start with a new character, level 1, with no gear.

No, you want a game where you can aquire the best gear playing solo, but somehow show it off in a persistent world to others. You don’t like the fact that you don’t do group content and yet are not rewarded equally by players who do that stuff.

Nice try.

I highly doubt wow is less than 1.5mil subs. Especially with classic launching this month, we will likely get a small bump in subs.
