I haven’t seen anyone post this, but here is the Map of Metal. Its a good place to roam around on.

^ My character’s secondary theme.
first time i saw Pantera was at a bar right when Cowboys from Hell dropped… some guy kept spitting on Phil while he was on stage, so Phil got tired of it, grabbed the guy by his shirt and beat the everloving bejesus out of him. bouncers threw the guy out all beaten and bloodied, and the crowd went wild
I prefer to listen to the in-game music when i’m playing, but lately i’ve been jamming Baroness, Mastodon, Neurosis, Myrkur, among others.
What do you guys think of this?
I normally feel that Hurdy Gurdy covers of more modern songs, especially Rock, come across kind of awful. Like, listenable, but you can tell it’s more of a “this person only knows how to play Hurdy Gurdy so they got as close as they could” kinda thing (or they’re pandering to a niche audience) as opposed to making a deliberate choice to play a song that works well with the instrument.
But absolutely not with this one.
(The drums help, too)
I admit I’m not the biggest Pantera fan, and it probably has something to do with the age / mixing of the original, but I legitimately prefer this cover over the original.
Týr, SKÁLD, GLORYHAMMER, Powerwolf and others…
Nah, they were just broke kids, I have been a fan of Emperor since the beginning, even saw them (him) live (basically a one man band). Once Ishan got some money the production got way better. Also when Peter Tatgren opened his studio in Sweden, the quality of Black Metal production got way better for most bands.
Death Knights/Undead are one of my favorites. They are so Black Metal! Blood, Frost, Unholy, Vikings (Vrykul). It’s just so kvlt. An ability back in the day called “Blood of the North” sounds like a full blown Black Metal album.
As for the songs, Heres a few albums that come to mind.
Dimmu Borgir: For All Tid
Dimmu Borgir: Devil’s Path
Darkthrone: Transylvanian Hunger
Gehenna: Seen Through the Veils of Darkness (The Second Spell)
I know some frown on good production for reasons totally unrelated to the quality of the music but theres no excuse for your album sounding like it was recorded in a toolshed these days. You can get a decentish laptop for less than a guitar amp now.
I listen to Enya.
There is a genre called raw black metal, where they believe production/studio isn’t real music lol!
Hotor I linked decided to do their last album raw, idk why. But previous albums were in the studio.
For some bands it’s a stylistic choice. I notice it a lot in the black metal bands that incorporate droning elements in their music and it just adds to the effect.
I listen to a lot of those style projects. Theyre rarely actual bands and are at best duos typically. Mesarthim are a great example of that. Ironically they dont use compression at all and the higher quality recordings are really good sounding. Unreqvited and Violet Cold are some other projects I love.
I think violet colds music is especially beautiful with the middle eastern influences.
