Megathread: Twilight Highlands Allied Races - DRAGONMAW Orcs and WILDHAMMER Dwarves

On that note, let’s get some votes going for UBRS and get the Dragonmaw Clan back into the consciousness of the modern WoW player.

Honestly, it’d be nice to have those as cosmetic options for orcs/dwarves that are already playable, for new races I would want something actually new not just ‘x but with y’. It’s why I think Maghar/Dark Iron/High Mountain/Mechagnome should have been cosmetic options for the existant races, not full seperate races instead of things like the Sethrak or the Yongol or the Taunka all of which have unique models not just a slight change on an existing one (yes, I know the Yongol and Taunka still use the Tauren rig, but the difference in looks between them aren’t just ‘tauren but with antlers’ like with HM, or ‘gnome but with prosthetics’ like with mechagnome)

Its not just cultural distinctions, its biological, for example mag har don’t have demonic taint in their blood.

Nightbourne are linked with arcane on an intimate level that has defined their evolution.

High moutain are blessed tauren and are technically supposed to be the superior tauren.

I think the Allied Race system is best served by expanding our options with relatively low-effort additions that use existing models, skeletons, animations and the like. The majority of additions have been things like Highmountain, Dark Iron, Void Elves, Mag’har - Kul Tirans and Zandalari were the exceptions to the rule.

There are stark cultural differences between these races that don’t make sense to simply add them to the “core” race. If you let the Durotar Orcs have brown skin, for example, you are contradicting the origin story for those Orcs (originating from internment camps populated by captured invading Orcs: all green) and creating an oxymoron by allowing the creation of Mag’har (meaning “Uncorrupted,” specifically untouched by the demonic pact) Warlocks (which have universally forged demonic pacts). Or you have Bronzebeard Dwarves essentially culturally appropriating Wildhammers for cosplay, completely leaving their actual culture (and physical appearance) unrepresented.

Don’t get me wrong - the game has room for other races! And they should keep them coming, as well! A few personal desires of mine are Ogres, Arrakoa, and Drakonids. But they should be core races that receive the proper care and attention. Leave the Allied Race concept to the easy wins.

True, but they’re not different enough to require a completely different model.

I’m just saying they shouldn’t be customization at all, as some ppl have suggested.

True. It’s so disconcerting to have so much of the Wildhammer cultural customizations, but simultaneously only having your Bronzebeard heritage acknowledged by things like the starting experience, racial city, racial abilities, heritage armour, racial mounts, and so on.

While I still believe that a half-measure is better than nothing at all… they deserved more than a half-measure. Particularly when the Wildhammers are much more culturally distinct from the Bronzebeards than the Dark Iron are.

I hope we get more lore options in the future that show more of an impact then just having more customization.

Like we seemingly have sandtrolls now and while I really like them and such, I could do with an explaination for how they joined the horde and some lore flag to state what clan I am in.

Like Bwonsamdi hates the sandfury trolls and doesnt guard their souls due to them using necromancy for labourers due to them being so desperate for workers.

Arguably Dark Trolls, as well.

Again, I’m always for more customization. But you do reach a point where you’ve muddied the vision of the race by just throwing everything in there. Generally, players understand why classes don’t get access to all the races; it’s because not all races are appropriate for evert class. The same can be said for racial customizations. Just as it doesn’t really make sense for Sand Trolls to be a part of the Island Troll culture, it doesn’t make sense for Wildhammers to be a part of the underground, cave-loving Bronzebeards.

We don’t.

The colour we got is from the Atal’ai jungle trolls.

Sand trolls have a pink undertone that our don’t have.

I agree with Grabbag.

I don’t think that skin tone or the darker one are for those tribes.

They’re just unlocked skintones for jungle trolls that already existed and are different from existing sand trolls and the one dark troll that still exists.

In that case, to be blunt, what’s the point? Why even put the effort in to giving players almost what they’ve asked for and being surprised when they’re not satisfied? The most egregious example is how we almost have playable High Elves. What is the harm in giving people exactly what they ask for?

Now High Elf fans are eternally frustrated because they’ll never get “true” High Elves, and the people that do like the Void Elf concept get a muted implementation that caters to High Elf fans who don’t even truly want to play the race.

That could be nice to add some Dragonmaw Orcs in Orgrimmar. We already have Wildhammer Dwarves in Stormwind so why not some Dragonmaw Orcs in Orgrimmar.

And of course, I want them as allied races too

They’re been oddly absent. We had Gorfax Angerfang rep the faction during Legion for the PvP appearance ceremony, and we saw the Vulpera assisting the Mag’har in moving into the Twilight Highlands… I wonder if the latter is hinting at something we haven’t yet considered.

I haven’t seen any diehard Sand Troll fans out there, but if they exist, I feel the pain. I can’t tell you how many times people have said that dRaGoNmAw aRe aLrEaDy pLaYaBlE because of the Blackrock and Shattered Hand Mag’har skins, which is completely wrong visually in addition to the lore being completely incompatible.

I agree with that. It’s just as bad as void elves with high elf looks and bronzebeard dwarves with wildhammer looks. They simply do not work very well with the stories either of these races have. Dragonmaw deserves better justice then that. Specially since dragonmaw isn’t a maghar, they drank from the demon blood like the other orcs to begin with.

I’m still dying for the MU Blackrock and Cult of the Damned skins for orcs as well.

But thank god we got three more shades of green with SLs, right?

I mean Alliance got high elves and we can’t even get all the orc skins that are canonically in the Horde.

Boggles the mind why they didn’t at least add the missing skins.

Because there is literally a guy at Blizzard who sits around all day sitting around thinking up ways to mess with this guy Grabbag.

Prove to me there isn’t, you can’t.

No we did not. Stop that non-sense now. Void elves will never be high elves story wise.

Yep. Utterly painful. Ironically, it has been more painful since Cataclysm. Prior to that, Dragonmaw Orcs in the Wetlands and Outland used the yellow skin I’m using here on Keldar. Then Cataclysm reintroduced them and gave them the custom makeover, out of reach of the playerbase.
