Megathread: Ogres as Playable Allied race

Dear, be careful. The high elf crowd LOVES to go rabid over the idea of getting ANYTHING but helfs.

My oh my, I thought we solved this when Blizzard explicitly told them that the High Elves are already playable and theyā€™re on the Horde.

Other than the Horde-aligned tribes.

Just gonna post my support for playable Ogres. While I think itā€™s more likely weā€™d get Mokā€™nathalā€¦ I would love to play an actual Ogre.

Two-headed Ogre Warlock, of course.

You know, I just remembered the quest in Dustwallow Marsh where you have to put to rest some fallen Stonemaul Ogres:

So I guess itā€™s possible to see some of these spirits somewhere in the Shadowlands, unlikely as it is. Even then, Iā€™m not sure what to tell them when they ask if we got their home back for them. Iā€™m still trying to figure that one out. ā† <

Iā€™m saving a character slot in hopes we get Ogres (and a few other slots for in case certain races become playable). If we get lucky to get playable Horde Ogres, Iā€™m planning to remake my Everquest 1 Ogre Berserker into an Ogre Fury Warrior. He was one of my favorite characters and means a lot to me.

So one of the loose ends from the Stonemaul Clan story is Mokā€™Morokk and whatever happened to him.

As a reminder, Mokā€™Morokk was the former leader of the Stonemaul Clan, put into place by Rexxar when he was leading the Stonemaul Clan. Of course, he gets a big head and proceeds to become a not-so-nice leader and was one of the big reasons the Stonemaul Clan never tried to get their home back (at first).

We ended up kicking his butt in Ogre combat, where he runs away andā€¦that was the last we ever heard of him. This was during Cataclysm, so a lot of time has passed since he was dealt with.

One of the ideas I had originally presented in the megathread was that he became the Gordunni King, as this would help tie the loose threads of Mokā€™Morokk and Dire Maul, but I found that the Gordunni left Dire Maul in the WoW Traveler book series. I also recently found out that the Gordunni eventually break away from and turned on the person that became their king, and while it doesnā€™t say what happens to them afterwards, it could be assumed that they eventually made their way back to Dire Maul.

So itā€™s still possible to work with the idea I originally presented. Mokā€™Morokk couldā€™ve been camping in the empty Dire Maul, things could have happened to prevent the Stonemaul in Feralas to move in and take over Dire Maul, the Gordunni couldā€™ve returned, Mokā€™Morokk challenged their present leader, and then he became their king. The Gordunni could then have become more aggressive as a result in trying to take over Feralas and also causing some general problems for the Horde. Itā€™d be a bit odd, since Mokā€™Morokk didnā€™t do much of anything to get the Stonemaul their home back but here he is making progress with the Gordunni, but it seems workable to me.

Whatever the case, with regards to Mokā€™Morokk, I donā€™t think he should get killed. Really, the best thing that could happen with him is that he ends up being the Stonemaul janitor, forced to clean and maintain the Ogre outhouses for the Stonemaul Clan. It seems like a fitting end for someone who wanted power. At the very least, he could be used again in the future as a minor antagonist if the story calls for it.

As for the Gordunni, I think with the method I mentioned, them joining the Horde as one of the Horde members becomes their king, likely one of the named Stonemaul Ogres, is more fun than just slaughtering them all. Besides, they seem to have some personality when you talk to them as their king and Iā€™d feel bad just killing them all, and if Blizzard went with the idea of multiple Ogre clans as the playable Ogre faction, it would just add some variety (and potential racials if different clans offer different abilities like the Zandalari and their loa). It also helps to give the Horde more units to defend Dire Maul, too.

Dire Maul and Feralas is something I want to type up a scenario of at some point in the future. I think if done right, events in Dustwallow Marsh and Feralas to reintroduce the Stonemaul Clan back into the Horde would be exciting and really awesome, especially if it ties up some loose ends and leads to playable Horde Ogres finally. Until then, I can only wonder what the heck the Stonemaul Clan has been up to since we last saw them.

Voicing my support for Ogres by bumping this thread.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm and time taken to make this-

Ogres would be played by under 2% of the playerbase. People used to request Goblins non-stop for RTS nostalgia and because they were a natural fit for the Horde (reasons why people want Ogres too). But not many people play Goblins and they wonā€™t play Ogres either.

Take a look at Kul Tirans - virtually no female models played. Male model is incredibly unpopular as well. Large, fat, ugly races donā€™t sell very well.

Also, Ogres are way too big to be playable. Why would you want to play a shrimpy Ogre? 90% of their selling point is two heads and a massive frame.

I think Mokā€™nathal is a better choice, because theyā€™re small enough to be playable while delivering the power-fantasy Ogres do. (Plus, unique animal-husbandry fantasy.)

Leaving my vague support right hereā€¦

puts it down.

I wanted to open a discussion on Ogre racials, as itā€™s something that I think could use some ideas.

One idea I did have is ā€œBONK!ā€ Basically, the Ogre bonks the mob/player on the head, causing one second of stun followed by a few seconds of a daze effect. Seemed like something that would be both useful and also humorous enough to add some character to the Ogre race.

Iā€™ve also been thinking about melee based stuns and WoW Ogres. I recall in Everquest 1, Ogres had full frontal stun immunity. Such a mechanic might be a bit overpowered in the context of WoW gameplay, not to mention that Ogres are easily stunned in WoW in general.

On the other hand, if Ogres got a special type of berserk racial, it could grant stun immunity during its duration while also providing some stat buffs, like haste and crit chances. Iā€™m sure there was ways to make it unique compared to the Darkspear Troll Berserk racial.

For another fun racial, Ogres could get a ā€œNAP TIME!ā€ racial in which they fall asleep for a few seconds to more quickly recover health, mana, and stamina (obviously not usable in combat). If awakened by a mob during this racial, they get angry and get some berserk-like stat buffs for a short duration. It would have a decent cooldown to make sure you canā€™t use it a bunch of times. Itā€™s a funny racial to think of, though I can imagine some groups trying to figure out how to get their sleeping Ogre party members to wake up to maximize DPS, so Iā€™m not too sure on how well this would actually work.

I also think something should be done with food. Maybe eating food for a few seconds leads to a content Ogre, where some slight primary stats would be added for a few minutes. A well fed Ogre is a happy Ogre, after all.

Lastly, there is the idea of different clans comprising playable Ogres, where you join a clan and get ability buffs based on that particular clan (similar to how the Zandalari get buffs based on what loa they follow). For example, Dunemaul Clan members could get a stamina buff while Stonemaul Clan members get a small percent chance to toss a stone or some object which causes a stun or daze effect. Obviously, you could switch between clans occasionally, as Ogres tend to forget who all is part of their clans or what clan they were part of to begin with.

Not the best of ideas, but I wanted to offer some suggestions. I do want to hear other ideas on Ogre racials, as there are some neat possibilities to be both useful and also fitting while being humorous.

So leveling another Horde Rogue character, I found some Ogre mobs that were able to be pick-pocketed in Frostfire Ridge. Since I was able to do that and I was already there, you know what that means?

Glyph of Disguise fun!

Interestingly enough, even though the Ogres were bigger than me, turning into one put them at a smaller size. Iā€™m going to guess this might be in relation to Ogres sharing models with the moonkin form of most of the Druid races. Iā€™ll have to try other Ogre mobs to see if I can find different sizes that work to do some size comparison. However, something neat about the Ogre model:

ā€œMe ride on cheek-kon ta bash dah lie-ence!ā€

Yep, the Ogre model rides mounts. I remember this working from one of the shaman stones in Frostfire Ride that has a chance of turning you into an Ogre. Also likely because Moonkin forms also ride mounts, so they share similar animations and such.

Now, how big is this model? Well, I did come across a Tauren NPC to compare:

So roughly Tauren sized. Also note that I had a 5 minute limit with the Ogre illusion, so trying to take a photo of the first Tauren NPC I found was annoying as they were walking away. One of the photos I did take looked cool, though:

Now despite being roughly Tauren size, I did take a couple of images of the Ogre in some doorways. I tried to find the smallest doorways I could in the small time limit I had. Here are two examples:

The second one barely fit. I didnā€™t have any elixirs of giant growth on me, sadly, to see how it wouldā€™ve looked. On one hand, getting the right Ogre size for players may result in them just waddling through some of the doorway (unless they design them to duck when going through doorways). On the other hand, Iā€™d be fine dealing with it if it meant we got playable Ogres.

I did take a few images just to compare this Ogre size to other races.

Not too bad in comparison to the Orc at the bank here.

Hanging out with the Pandaren. (Edit: I just noticed the two Pandaren on the left seemed to have crashed into each other while sparring. Theyā€™re fine, of course, but it is amusing I caught their animations at that moment)

Hanging out with the Vulpera.

I also took a couple of pictures to see what the Ogre model looks compared to other players.

Would look a bit better slightly more bigger, in my opinion. Also, yes, that is someone wearing a yeti suit there. They originally were several times bigger until whatever buff they had wore off. I shouldā€™ve taken a picture, but I was pressed for time and also wanted regular sized players around to do a size comparison.

Lastly, I did test a specific animation:

ā€œHmm, dis taking long. Dem fishy-fishes not hungry yetā€¦but tumbly be rumbly right nowā€¦ā€

Ogres can fish. Likely due to sharing assets with some of the moonkin, but still neat to see.

Anyway, that is all I was able to take for now. Iā€™ll likely do more over time and share them as I get ideas to test stuff or to show how Ogres would look around Horde cities and such.

One of the ogre rares in the Arathi Highlands, Kovork, drops a toy (think itā€™s near 100% drop rate) that lets you change into an ogre. It lasts a lot longer than the 5 minute rogue glyph and persists through combat if you havenā€™t got it already.

Also thanks for posting. You always take time to right out informative posts. Hopefully we get ogres soon with how many animations they have that are ready.

As far as the size that folk often bring up, in the Lore Ogres are supposed to generally be a little taller than Tauren from what I have found. Most of the GIGANTIC ones we see are large for gameplay reasons rather than for lore ones. Easier to see easier to see them as enemies.

I suspect if they did make them playable along with a model revamp most ogres in the world would be tuned down in size.

Oh! Thank you for this bit of knowledge!

So I got my second Horde Rogue character past Legion and into BfA, where I opted to use the previous Ogre model to see if there was a Heart of Azeroth animation of some sort. Originally, I thought I read somewhere that Ogres did not have a HoA animation of any kind.

As it turns out, they do have a HoA animation. I suspect it might be relation to the moonkin assets being shared which would explain why. I took a few photos to try to get good angles and lighting, as I only had one shot at doing this.

The pose is the same for absorbing the small fragments and during the portion where things go haywire and Magni starts screaming.

So what does this mean?

Well, at the current moment, not too much. As I mentioned before, this could be more to do with shared moonkin assets as opposed to considerations of Ogres being playable.

However, the current male Ogre model still has a bunch of work and animations already part of it. Iā€™m curious if it is possible to just work with it, add customization options, and be able to add armor pieces to an unarmored Ogre model to turn it into a fully functional male Ogre player character.

Of course, I know nothing of how WoWā€™s programming works in that regard, and Iā€™m sure Iā€™d go insane trying to study it. Still, Iā€™d be happy with the current Ogre model for male Ogres, and if it was workable in that regard, just female Ogres would need to be designed and created.

Anyway, I just wanted to share what I found. Definitely an interesting find, for sure, though I donā€™t take it as a hint for things to come, much as I want playable Horde Ogres.

A bit belated response to this, but while I do have the toy, I opted to go the Glyph of Disguise route for a couple reasons.

The lesser reason is that, silly as this sounds, using the NPC Ogre model I figured would be more likely to have the animations I wanted to test, in case the toy was coded differently (it likely isnā€™t). I also was planning to see if height was kept from turning into NPCā€™s, which it doesnā€™t seem to.

The main reason I went with what I did is that I felt that people would be more interested in seeing an Ogre model that wasnā€™t completely covered in armor, mostly the helmet. Just seems to be more fun to see the Ogre underneath the mask, in my opinion.

For those wondering, this is the mob that drops the Ogre illusion toy:

Who drops the following toy:

Which looks like this:

There are two other Ogre illusion toys, which were rewards from the physical WoW card game that was released many years ago. I assume the only way you can get them is via ebay and luck.

I did also find a consumable that tailors/leather workers can make, but given the comments were around 2006, Iā€™m unsure if this is still in the game or not:

To my knowledge, those are the only Ogre illusion toys/items in the game. It shouldnā€™t deter Ogres from ever becoming playable, in my opinion, and the toys could still exist if playable Ogres do ever become a thing.

Regardless, itā€™s fun to use illusion items, but it doesnā€™t beat being the real thing.

I wouldnā€™t expect Ogres to be really huge, but I would expect them to be a decently big size (at least a bit bigger than Tauren).

I think I recall in Everquest 2, Ogres had a skill called ā€œCommanding Presenceā€ where they grow 20% in size that lasted as long as you wanted. They could always just give Ogres a racial that does that, either for fun or as part of a buff. If anything, they can say that the Goblins shrunk them down slightly so they would be able to fit in doors, not weigh down airships or mounts, and not take up space in Horde bases. Would make some sense that Ogres could break out of it temporarily to be bigger (berserking Ogre racial example).

You could also just have the size increase be like Commanding Presence in that you can become a big Ogre as long as you want with restrictions in this big form (canā€™t ride mounts, etc). As long as players couldnā€™t grief others with it, which I think there are ways to make sure they canā€™t in that regard, it could be a possible solution.

Just a fun thought, is all.

Oh Iā€™m no hero. Iā€™m just a nerd with a keyboard and maybe a bit too much free time (when college permits it). In terms of Ogres, Iā€™m definitely no Rickflairwoo. Still, Iā€™m glad people do like what I post in the different megathreads. ^^;

That would be neat!

the average size of an ogre is 8ft tall, that is smaller than the tauren and zandalari average of 10ft tall

If they ever be playable zandalari size would be completely fine.

it pissed me off for a long time that those itens were cad game related, hate that kind of stuff, gladly we have the kovok toy now, sadly the cd is high.

I found an interesting quote on Wowpediaā€™s Horde entry, taken from the ā€œVolā€™jin: Shades of the Hordeā€ novel:

ā€œIā€™ll tell ya what de Horde is. De Horde that me anā€™ Thrall built. It be a family. When de whole world try ta put us down, da family come anā€™ pick us back up.ā€ ā€” Warchief Volā€™jin

So what does this have to do with Ogres? Well, a couple of things.

The obvious thing is that assuming the Stonemaul still havenā€™t reclaimed their home, the Horde really needs to go back and help them with it. Then again, we donā€™t know what is going on, since we havenā€™t heard from them since Cataclysm. Still, the Stonemaul are part of the Horde and are really proud to be part of it, so it would be good to check on them to see how theyā€™re doing and assist them if needed. Aside from helping fellow members of the Horde getting their home back, this would increase the Hordeā€™s security in Dustwallow Marsh with another base in the area.

The other thing is that with Sylvanas no longer warchief and the Horde moving towards a form of democracy, I feel like the chances of Ogres being accepted among the Horde should increase. This considering Thrall is part of the Horde council and Rexxar, where ever he went off to, is also still part of the Horde in some fashion. Youā€™d think some of them would remember the Stonemaul and at least heard about their help in Feralas and how they owe the Horde a lot. At the very least, the Stonemaul Ogres should have a place on the council if the idea is to make sure every member of the Horde has a voice.

The point is if the Horde is going back to a ā€œeveryone is familyā€ stance, then a good start is checking on the Stonemaul Ogres. Otherwise, itā€™s a bit hypocritical to say that quote above and just let the Stonemaul continue to struggle, again assuming they havenā€™t reclaimed their home.

On that note, I should see how to request an audience with the Horde Council. With being the Horde Champion and having saved the world a few times, youā€™d think theyā€™d listen to me as I try to support certain races to become members of the Horde. Hopefully theyā€™ll give me the time of day and actually listen for onceā€¦

I could see ogres joining horde officially with Rexxar showing up and asking for the playerā€™s help with something. He then accompanies us to check on the Stomemaul ogres and after some quests where we help them or something they officially join with Rexxar as their voice on the council.

Rexxar should be involved if the Stonemaul Ogres come back into the story and become playable, but Iā€™m not sure him being their leader again or speaker would be the best course of action.

My opinion is that having an Ogre leader just gives the playable Ogre faction more of an identity, which the Stonemaul has in Tharg. Rexxar also strikes me as the type to be more of a wanderer that lives on the land rather than leading a civilization of sorts, so itā€™s unclear if he would want to become the main leader of the Stonemaul Ogres again or represent them.

Not to mention that if Tharg became the speaker for the Stonemaul Ogres, this leaves Rexxar open to become the racial leader of the Mokā€™nathal if they were to become an allied race or even a customization option for regular Orcs. Seems like this would please both Ogre and Mokā€™nathal fans. Just my opinion, of course.
