Yes they do mainly for group content but in open world some like to have a pet out.
We understand that pets are useless in Dungeons and raids but when out in the world when we are by ourselves doing things they are helpful and we don’t feel we should have to change specs depending on the content we are currently playing . No one should have to .

Except that is still going to happen because BM and Surv will still have pets and in most cases MM only used pets in open world and only in dungeons on demand if they were the only source for lust/hero

They aren’t being taken away. You can use them in two other specs. The one that optimally doesn’t use pets and most play without one just no long will have wasted talent points making that as it is.
It will get more and the only change is talents to remove the pet being changed. Your argument is moot. The pets you have are still usable as the beast master and the survival hunter.
Your claim is rediculious… A Marksman by its very definition is skill in shooting… Nothing about pets or mastery of beasts at all. So no the name doesn’t need to be changed. Thats just silly straw grasping now.
A Marksman prizes their own skill above all else to be the best at shooting. A pet thus actually fantasy wise makes LESS sense to have as one.

i’ve said all i need to say about this on the hunter class forum but i’ll sign this thread in solidarity
seconding that the removal of pets is a mistake.

exactly, now run to blizzard and ask them why are they adding some random pet that cannot be controlled or interacted with, if a marksman by its very definition is skill in shooting… Nothing about pets or master of beasts at all. go, we will wait.
Hawks, falcons, birds of prey were the OG hunter spotter and tracker. Whats fail is you trying to mix what Marksman by definition means literally being an expert shooter.
Blizzards original description of them on wowpedia:
Marksmen shroud themselves in the perils of the untamed wilds, perfecting the use of weapons that are deadliest from great range. They’ve maintained little interest, however, in gaining the loyalty of the many beasts inhabiting these crude landscapes. Instead, the marksman blends into the surrounding environment, surveying behavior of all manner of predator and gleaning deadly methods for stalking their own prey. A sniper in hiding, the marksman unleashes arrows and bullets with deadly precision, exposing the weakness in whoever—or whatever—passes through their crosshairs.[1]
ok Mr. Contradictive.
you are free to go sit in the corner now.
Because birds of prey are a far better long range scout and surveyor to find targets for the hunt.
It makes perfect sense… You just dont want it to. Oh lordy lord. Lol the bird isnt in your control its a spell like murder of crows. Its not a companion pet as youre defining a “pet”
Sure though, you try to tell me to “sit down” person who doesn’t understand the definition of Marksman.
Nothing to do with a pet.
just because you cant control it does not mean it is not a pet.
eat your own words.
Theirs nothing there to eat. By wows definition of what youre complaining and seem to be confused about isnt by wow definition a pet.
Can’t ignore facts. Calling me a troll doesn’t make it so.
you see, i will leave you with this. deep down i dont really care as much as other people about this change. i play every class equally. but mm the most. i play mm with no pet in raid and m+. raid and m+ accounts for around 5-10% of my playtime. the other 90-95% of my playtime i am farming, getting achievements and 100% solo play. i play with a pet out.
the issue that i am having with the change is that there is nothing wrong with leaving the pet as an option. we are “HUNTERS” after all. and since wow’s launch the hunter staple, the hunter niche was having a pet.
the changes can still go ahead. having the option will not affect the rebuild whatsoever. they can add a damage penalty or whatever, it dont matter. but the fact remains that there is no harm in leaving it as an option, and in a way it will still be unique from bm and survival which mandates you have a pet, whereas MM it is optional.
that is all. if i need a pet for some tougher solo challenges i will play bm or one of my other warbound classes. but my personal grievance over the complete pet removal revolves around, why? it changes nothing. you mean blizzard is taking it up a notch with rp that they are tearing the very core of a class apart within said spec? i think not.
The history of hunters using birds of prey, or falconry, dates back thousands of years. It was a popular sport in many civilizations, including those of China, Arabia, Persia, Europe, and the New World.
Origins
Evidence suggests falconry originated in Mesopotamia around 2,000 BC
The earliest accounts of falconry are from Mesopotamia
The Gilgamesh Epic of 2000 BC mentions hunting with birds of prey in Iraq
Popularity
Falconry was popular in Medieval Europe, especially between 500–1500
Falconry was popular in England in the 1600s
The sport declined in popularity in the late 18th century due to the French Revolution and the growing popularity of firearms
Falconry became popular again in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
Status
The type of bird of prey a person owned indicated their social standing
Kings and queens kept the most prized birds of prey, such as gyrfalcons
Commoners kept less prized birds of prey, such as kestrels
Notable falconers
Henry VIII, who used a gyrfalcon
Queen Elizabeth
William Shakespeare, who was an avid falconer
Genghis Khan, who used falcons and other hawks.
So from a RL and class aspect it works. Its a spell really so more for flavor. It doesn’t need a pet because they use their skill and marksmanship to take down the enemy.
The point of it all is to clear up talent points making MM what it should be and giving it a much needed power boost and permanent identity.
There is nothing wrong with leaving it as a visual. Sure, glyph it to change the hawk into your stable pet. Just saying it as a flavor and fantasy to its name is true to what it was intended to be and is being changed so youre not wasting talents to spec into it to play as its intended.
I have no issue with keeping a pet as a visual just saying the envisioned identity of MM was by spec description of MM becoming what it was intended.
They should offer a glyph or something of the sort may e a toy to use that hunters can get.
Theirs plenty they could do to please both sides without keeping the pointless talents.
Then their line about needing to customize it was a lie or at least misleading, since there is no need to customize something that doesn’t exist visually.
This has been the case with the existing MM hunter for the past two decades.
and that’s the thing.
it would be as simple as adding a “non-talented” passive in the MM spellbook. a passive that reduces your damage, i dunno by 10-15-20% if you have an active pet. there would be no need for lone wolf. no need for additional talents.
i would gladly take a 20-30% damage reduction with the benefit of having a tool / utility such as a pet, for everything outside of raid / m+.
but in the end, its blizzard’s decision and vision. while i think its just a power stroke because their vision for the new mm seems very cloudy (see: melee survival; LOLOL) but they are gonna do what they think is best.
To be fair I hated survival when it came out as is. Now its my go to in keys and becoming my raid spec too. Its fun and the tons of rushing onto targets with your pet smashing into them is super fun and satisfying.
You feel like you and your pet are a duo team and it honestly makes me feel my pet is my best buddy vs BM just controlling mindless creatures. As SV youre IN IT WITH your partner sharing the danger.
IMO Survival feels more hunter than any of the specs. In regards to really having that faithful battle buddy.
BM you’re holding mastery of them youre at range, it leaves me feeling detached from them, like Im using them as meat shields. As survival youre together close and brutal and “surviving” together or dying together.
ranged survival hunter was my 1st class. then i played druid tank / rogue from bc to wrath. then cata up until end of wod i was a ranged survival main again. when they change it to melee i unsubbed and quit wow for almost 2 years.
came back on and off and then around the end bfa came back full time and been bouncing between mm / bm and paladins and mages.
range survival really fit the bill. black arrow had to go but it was blissful imho. it was perfect.
the biggest problem now with this pet change for mm is that not many hunters i know like melee. so survival is not even an option. and then bm, which o.k. you are not really in control of your damage like you are with mm. you have to make you pet deal that damage. it is not as satisfying. mm with no pet is awesome in raids and m+ and i really do welcome the change. but i would also love to keep my pet for the other 90-95% of my playtime in open world, farming, collecting, delves, achievements and solo challenges.
