happens to me in classic nvidia card
I don’t think it really has anything to do with the flicker issue in this game. I’ve read through the notes on a dozen different sites and nothing in them indicates anything relative to the WoW model flickering. It’s just a newer version of the of the KB that they did the rollback on a few months ago and those flickers were completely different. I could be wrong, but I guess we’ll see.
The only real fix on the way, as far as I know, will be like I said a few posts back: The next branch of Nvidia drivers. So probably 2-4 weeks away.
Long time lurker here, because I’ve had this problem for quite some time now as well. I’ve got a 2080Ti. Something very interesting happened that appears to have made the flickering stop.
About a month ago, I opened up HWMonitor to see how my computer was performing, what kind of temps my computer would get to, and all that good fun stuff. I noticed something very alarming in the process. My CPU temps were fine, topping out at 60-65C on each core. My GPU temp was fine, topping out at 77-78C, but the very concerning part is that my GPU was hotspotting as high as 107C.
I decided that I was going to install a custom liquid cooling loop in my computer, so I could convert my GPU to liquid cooling, and cool my CPU with the custom loop too, and take out the AIO liquid cooler I had on it.
I finally got the loop installed Thurs. night, and all is working fantastically with it. My temps are way down across the board. Now my GPU tops out around 45C, and only hotspots as high as 65C. As I was taking the heatsink/fan, and everything else off my GPU, the thermal paste job on it was absolute trash. There was hardly any there, and since I’ve had the card since 2018, it was starting to dry up.
Here’s the really interesting bit… ever since I installed the custom loop, the flickering has completely stopped. I’ve spent a total of 8-10 hours leveling alts through Revendreth and Maldraxxas, killing the world boss in Bastion, and running bits and pieces of Castle Nathria, and the flickering is gone.
Maybe it was simply the (basically) re-seating of my GPU in the PCIe slot, since I had to take it out of my computer to put the water block on it. Maybe it was the trash thermal paste job on it from the factory that was letting it go crazy on some temps. Or maybe there’s some trash part of the driver that’s causing GPUs to hotspot like crazy, and this is keeping that from happening. Maybe it was just complete and utter luck.
That was just my experience though, your mileage may vary.
That’s normal. The temp sensor for the “hotspot” being exposed is a recent thing nvidia did. It’s just the reading of a very specific spot on a card and is in a very small amount of volume. The heat from it rapidly spreads into surrounding materials. Their hardware is designed around this delta between the regular temp reading and the hotspot reading. But yeah, it does seem alarming when you see a temp in the 100+ range.
I can make the flicker happen with my GPU running at 40C where it’s massively underclocked and I have fans all on 100% jet engine mode.
Can you confirm your Nvidia driver version from the NVCP, your WoW directX version and your WoW antialiasing setting? 457.xx drivers and older didn’t have the flicker, WoW in dx11 mode doesn’t have the flicker and WoW without MSAA doesn’t usually have the flicker.
I have tested drivers from 442.50 thru 466.11 and stopped there and tested with latencymon and various other tools the flickering does occur in older drivers prior to 457.51 just nowhere near as much, and tested on a few pcs with different gen video cards from Nvidia, I did use DDU before each testing phase and I even fresh installed the laptop that I tested it with. I do not believe it is solely on the fault of Nvidia however it is a huge contributing factor. I personally believe it is a number of different scenarios that are contributing to this flicking we are seeing from landscaping to shadows on mobs and so on mainly found in the SL areas. I know that windows is about to push an update that also is addressing this and with WoWs team working with Nvidia I hope that it can be resolved.
Systems Tested with:
9900ks w/2080ti ftw3 32gb ram@3600
9700k w/1070 ftw2, 32gb ram@3000
7700hq w/1060gb, 32gb ram@2400
Ryzen 5 2600 w/1660ti and 16gb ram@3200
These are all performed with NVME drives from samsung. I have left the 9700k and the 9900ks build on the 457.51, while the heat generated is a tad higher than other drivers it is the most stable. I left the Laptop on 442.50 along with the R5 Build.
I will post two screenshots of just examples for those that wish to see them, and if Caterpepi comes through I am positive he will speak good things as we have worked in the past to help solve other users issues. My personal recommendation is for anyone that doesn’t need to be on the latest drivers mainly I.E. people that just got cards that was recently released that are required to be on 466.xx+ I would stick to 457.51 for now and pray this MS update and the Nvidia driver update fixes this problem that has been ongoing since SL from what I can personally recall. https://imgur.com/a/guRjYVb
p.s. I really wish nvidia and MS has a better QC team or at least listened well to feedback hub / forums from the users who have dumped hundreds of hours into working on things with and for them.
p.p.s. Going back through my post history and talking with Caterpepi I found reports dating back to may’ 2020. Can provide links for it if requested.
new drivers in 471.11
notes indicate its resolved
On a side note you can find KB5003690 on windows update as well today. Check under optional
It’s been a long ride, glad they finally hashed it all out. On the plus side, I learned a lot about the DX API and DWM MPO systems lol…
Indeed this is finally fixed and man did it take a long time. Thanks to nVidia and Blizzard for their work on this.
Also, as mentioned, I would grab KB5003690 for Windows 10 as well.
What does this do? I’m always hesitant to do option stuff since its what has caused a few issues for me in the past haha.
This has been a long and wild ride, glad its finally over and now we can enjoy the game with all the DX12 optimizations.
Seems new patch 471.11 has fixed my flicking now and I am running Direct X12 now and added bonus mine and herb nodes are sparkling more then before …quite nice.
It also seemed to fix the pixelated particle effects bug as well. I could normally reliably reproduce the bug, but couldn’t manage to do so after a bit of testing.
I imagine the DX12 performance will get even better with the drivers when they do the culling of support for older models of GPUs. I think that’s a couple months away though.
I’ve seen an odd issue twice now since updating to 471.11. On rare occasion, when alt-tabbing back to the game from another window, my framerate is getting stuck at like 40 or so. Once just alt-tabbing around again fixed it; the other time, I had to fully restart the game. This was on TBC Classic.
Just wanted to note it here in case others see this too.
For me this driver did nothing. I still have flickering shadows in the bastion. Also i can temporarily fix it when i switch my shadows to low and back to max (also this improve my performance too. for example i have 68 fps in 4k with raytracing and after swap to low and max shadows i got 90 fps in same place without any movements).
i play with full ultra settings, ray tracing etc.
Confirmed fixed here as well with MSAA and RTX Shadows turned back on. Also noticed OBS no longer has UI element flickering in it when RTX Shadows are left on or some weird flickering in other UI windows (only showing in OBS) while in the Night Fae sanctum. Not sure if that’s related to the drivers or the new major version of OBS though.
Flickering like crazy during load screen and few spots in zones RTX 3080, latest driver, DX 12, Gsync panel. When i turn off gsync, it all stops. Anyone else ?
Don’t have GSYNC on, but 3080 here, there is some…odd flicker here and there.
I mainly updated these drivers for doom eternal
Check WoW under advanced settings and see if your max background FPS is set to something around there. It’s possible that in your alt tabbing back in forth, the game isn’t being pulled to the “front” and the game still thinks it’s in background mode.
Other than that, check your Gsync settings. I set mine to: Enable for full screen mode(not the one with it +windowed) and can verify it’s working with WoW in DX12 mode and doesn’t suffer from the frame rate bugging. The only other times I’ve seen that issue is with programs like Photoshop when I had gsync set to fullscreen+windowed. If you ever need it for a windowed program or game, you can always change it to use gsync in the game profile of the NVCP.
As for anyone else having issues the drivers, try a DDU clean reinstall
Post your dxdiag info and screen cap a clip of the flicker. It might not be the same flicker we are talking about in this thread. There was a VRR flicker bug as well that was tied to gsync/async.
It sounds like you guys have your gsyncs set up wrong. Just set it to enabled fullscreen. Don’t set it to do windowed as well. Again, if you need it for a windowed app that won’t proc the drivers to use gsync, change it on a per application profile basis in the NVCP.
Oh and reboot your PC after changing that setting just to make sure.
7 months later we get a fix. New driver has fix.
I have odd issues with G-Sync in Fullscreen mode only selected as well, but I think it’s more to do with I’m using a Samsung CRG9 which is Freesync not G-sync approved. G-Sync will let me use it but loading screens and in game the monitor can’t seem to adjust right and looking at the info screen on it will vary from 50hz to 120. If its over 90 its fine under 90 and you get some odd issues where lighter areas will go dim and bright (its not dramatic but it’s noticeable), not really a flicker but it’s annoying. I just leave G-Sync off lol
New driver works great, i still see rocks flicker a little in Bastion on a FM but I saw that with 457.51 as well so maybe the rocks are modeled oddly or something. Arden isn’t in full EDC party mode anymore and it’s finally great to use a newer more optimized driver for once. Hopefully it only gets better from here.
Has seemed to of fixed it for me, was getting worse all the time, installed driver today Ange seems good.
Although cannot get my overlay settings the same, brightness or something just feels a tad off
