Mage Tower too difficult? Boycott it

Oh I see. So you must’ve raided in Nihilum back in the day.

A subscription fee is $15 a month. It is economically viable, if you’re playing long-term, to pay the 6-month subscription which over time is less than $15/mo. And you get free mounts and cosmetics for it.

I am boycotting the Mage Tower.

6 Mages in my guild have all tried it and say it’s crap.

Another Blizzard fail.

Exactly. You have a game that was built to challenge both players. It is a classic game, perfect in design, and in today’s age, you don’t even need another human to play. You’re all good. You don’t need Dark Souls and the Mage Tower.

Video games are a story-telling medium. Since the start, people have used hacks, game enhancement devices, and console commands to eliminate or circumvent rules in games. People who play video games are not traditionally challenge-seekers.

When you combine the two things, you end up making someone angry because they get excluded. Either the challenge-seeker is denied their challenge (which they could’ve instantly found and maintained if they had chosen to play Chess instead) or the casual gamer is denied their reward because it is gated behind a challenge. This is unfortunate, as casual gamers equate to movie-viewers and novel-readers. We are here to enjoy an interactive ride, not to develop and demonstrate any sort of skills.

I believe that games should belong to casual gamers, because challenge-seekers already have a game of their own, and most of life is challenging by its nature.

Whereas pleasant experiences through which we can enjoy an exciting story without worrying about stress and failure are rare commodities. This should be cultivated whenever possible.

Gamers should be treated as readers/viewers of an interactive story.

We should not be tested, as we are customers; not contestants, students, or employees.

You are still paying more up front. The entire point of it is to get you to commit the money, because you can’t refund it. So if after a month you stop playing, they still get the money for a 6 month sub. The mounts are literally just bait to get you to fork over the cash. The $15 sub, as you said you pay, gets you nothing more than server access. You don’t get free anything for it.

I can handle mythic raid bosses, but I can’t handle some of these MT challenges. God-Queen’s Fury really, really sucks as a warlock. I have 9.8% physical dmg mitigation as a clothie and the mobs won’t stick to my felguard. I completed this same challenge in Legion on my shaman. I just take way too much unavoidable dmg. People keep saying, “oh, you just need to group them up”. That’s really hard when they can’t make up their mind who they’re going to hit.

I put all of my MT gear in the bank and I’m going to seek challenges that aren’t ridiculous.

Depends on the game. WoW has always been a game that catered to different types of players. Sorry dude

I remember using the invincibility cheat on the original Legend of Zelda and having the most fun of my young life. I remember Game Sharking infinite HP in Final Fantasy and enjoying it all the way to the end. I remember how exciting it was to see all the later stages of Castlevania after I first made sure I couldn’t be killed.

Stories are my favorite thing in the world.

I watch a lot of movies and series and I read a lot of novels, but the vast majority of stories I’ve enjoyed have been presented through video games. JRPGs tend to tell the best stories IMO.

That was when lots of people played. There are like 8 challenge-seekers who are still subscribed and they’re all pretty demoralized.

Well not everyone is like you dude, believe it or not there are just as many people that actually enjoy the satisfaction they get from conquering the game at the hardest difficultly and not just turning on god mode. Its a good thing this game offers both

Works for the opposite end too. Pokemon doesn’t have an elaborate story (at least imo), yet it was still a lot of fun for me because I enjoyed collecting all the Pokemon and powering them up. It was one of those games that I actually wanted to grind and level up, because the rewards were fantastic. New abilities, evolutions… just felt so good to progress in.

Not all stories are explicitly written. Sometimes, you and what you do are the story.

I like games like Pokemon where the “challenge” is based on strengths like playing a lot, paying attention, and grinding - a low-effort, productive activity that can become tedious for some people. That’s the sort of strength a gamer should have, because that strength is a metric of engagement and personal priority rather than a demonstration of skill in some invented technical process coded to look like a battle.

“Challenges” in WoW are like playing with Bop-it.
