I mean, so far in this thread by just about everyone who has those appearances … if you just waited it out, admittedly you were able to outgear it and basically got it handed to you at the end, so thanks for proving the point that it’s not about the prestige of skill. It’s just an optional cosmetic. So why gatekeep?
Why is the point in time the most prestigious part of those skins? Not the skill, not the will to do it… just that you happened to be active in the game at that point in time? That’s the only thing people with the skins have over people who don’t. Not more skill, not more prestige, not more will, not more effort. They just happened to be subbed at the right time in WoW’s 19 year history.
You wanted something and you got it. And if you didn’t put in the time, effort, and practice to get it… that was on you. Makes perfect sense. I am 100% willing to put in the time, effort, and practice (hundreds of times, over and over until I get it right) to EARN that skin, just like anyone else. But I can’t because we’re gatekeeping a point in time.
Side note: the COUNTLESS OTHER OPTIONS don’t match my aesthetic. Recolors don’t match my transmog. My glowy bear druid wants the same glowy cat form to match. Not in different colors - the same color purple that my bear has. So a recolor won’t work.
Again - Blizz chose to bring the mage tower back for people who missed out the first time. So there’s no reason to not give those skins back, too.
This makes sense, as long as it isn’t something which looks better than the usual stuff and suits the theme you want to go with your character. That’s the problem.
I have that mount. I love it and use it all the time.
There’s absolutely zero reason it couldn’t be made a low drop chance on mythic difficulty. Keep it in the game/bring it back and just make it a drop chance. Or put it on a vendor for 100k gold or something.
It’s kind of silly that they take stuff out of the game for the sake of prestige.
I made a post about this exact topic not so long ago, and my stance on it remains the same - permanently removing content for the sake of FOMO is never a good idea.
Bring back the Mage Tower Appearances, but make them a reward for obtaining this:
Tower Overwhelming is a Feat of Strength obtained when you clear 36/36 of the Mage Tower challenges - every class, every spec.
If there was ever an achievement that should reward the player for their time, dedication, and mastery over their characters, it’s this FoS - and your reward should be the original Mage Tower appearances.
As someone who earned all of them except the healer ones I’m gonna have to say no. We all knew during that time that you wouldn’t be able to get them ever again. So there was the prestige of knowing you earned something that wasn’t going to be obtainable anymore.
Now trust me I would love to be able to get some old elite pvp mogs from legion. But I know they are a limited time thing. And I missed out. Sure I’m bummed, but I’m not crying about it.
ALL of the ones druids don’t have are listed greyed out with a lock icon. ALL of them. The mage tower ones, plus the other few I still don’t have yet. Let me make sure you understand… ALL APPEARANCES WE DON’T HAVE YET ARE LISTED GREY WITH A LOCK ICON. The difference is that I can actually go out and do the work to get the 2nd and 3rd owlcat colors if I wanted them. Or I can go do the Legion world boss achievement to get one of the other alternate colors if I wanted to.
I can’t post links, but if you want proof… here is my barber shop screen to show you:

If I wanted to, I could go out and get all of those greyed out + lock icon ones EXCEPT for 22 - 25. (Mage tower.) All the rest are available for me to go unlock if I want.
There is nothing I can do to go and get the mage tower ones. So either don’t list them for people if there is never going to be a way to get them, or give them back to us so we can try to earn them like anyone else.
Sorry, but nothing about being subbed at the right time 7 years ago is prestigious. “We all knew during that time…” but what about people who hadn’t started playing yet? Or people who have played since 2004 but was not subbed during that window of time in 19 years of a game’s history for various reasons?
Since the word keeps getting thrown around, prestige should be based on skill and knowledge of your class to beat the challenge provided to earn the skins.
Quit pretending that a limited time makes something prestigious.
With the advent that is the WoW Token, there is nothing prestigious to this game anymore. Anything you want can effectively be purchased via RMT now - Keystone Hero, M+ 20 Portals, AotC/Cutting Edge, Mythic Raid mount, 2400 Elite PVP Rating, BoE Gear, Pets, Etc.
Literally anything & everything you want in this game can be obtained via swiping your credit card. How very prestigious…
Oh I’m “over” it - otherwise I wouldn’t be playing or enjoying my druid. I still think those appearances should be available to anyone who wants to EARN it via SKILL. Since that’s prestigious - having the SKILL to beat the challenge and EARN something.
Keep telling yourself there’s something prestigious about something being limited time, lol.
“Hey I didn’t play during x expansion. So I should be able to still get the cutting edge achievement for beating the mythic raid.” Or, “hey I didnt like to pvp during an expansion. But now i do and i want an old elite set.”
“It’s not my fault that I didn’t play during it. It’s your fault for making a timed thing that I can’t get anymore.”
Except Blizzard brought the Mage Tower back to allow people to earn the achievements for those who missed it, so your argument is invalid here. The things you mentioned were not brought back to allow people to achieve them at a later time if they missed them.
They brought the Mage Tower back, you can earn all of the achievements again, and for druids - the skins are listed as an option to unlock in the barber shop. Except they are still unobtainable. There’s no reason to not allow those appearances to be accessible again then.
The only difference between someone who beat the challenge 7 years ago and someone who beats the challenge now is time. That doesn’t make someone who did it 7 years ago any more prestigious, and it’s a stupid reason to gatekeep. It doesn’t make it any less meaningful for someone who did it 7 years ago - both people in this case have the skill to beat the challenge and EARN the appearance.
LOL
The only people crying victim in this thread are the ones who somehow think their achievement of beating a challenge 7 years ago is going to suddenly be meaningless because others now get a chance to also beat the challenge.
Nah. Things that are exclusive are cool in part because they are exclusive. Blizzard is making new cool things all the time. Focus on those, and then the next time Blizzard says “hey, you’ll only be able to acquire/earn these now, and then they’ll go away,” pay attention.
FOMO should never be a thing to push a game to be more “Active”. If you require limited time events to obtain an item before it disappears for good just to make the game seem more “Active” then there is something wrong with the game at its core that is causing a lack of activity.
To the topic of the Mage Tower skins:
For Druids in general the original Mage Tower Skins are still listed there at the barber shop, they’re literally just “locked” for the most of us that couldn’t complete the content. I don’t agree with the philosophy of “You had to be there to get it.” I was there, well I was there near the tail end of it desperately trying to gear up as quickly as I could after having a long hiatus that lasted the entirety of WoD and almost the entirety of Legion.
Keeping the old skins as a reward further incentivizes going back and doing the content to try to accomplish it. It gives us something to do in a time of content drought. It’s not like we can now out gear the Mage Tower and have the content be trivial. We still have to put in the effort to succeed at the fights and strategize after wipes.
