Whats the prefered spec for leveling mages in BC?
fire frost or arcane
Frost due to increased survivability plus nice burst with freeze, shatter, ice lance combos.
frost 1-60, fire 60-70, arcane/fire at 70 for pve and pvp. That’s what I would do, as someone who leveled as both fire and frost having an undead mage i levled to 60 as fire and this gnome mage i leveled to 60 as frost. I also have experience in TBC with mages, i personally cannot stand frost spec, don’t like it at all, that’s great if the rest of you do but it’s just not for me, i got Arcane fire instead at 70, talents points down to mind mastery to get 5/5 25% of int converted into spell power and pyroblast/ignate/blastewave from fire. I have improved manashield/improved dampen magic/bonus intellect/bonus sp from intellect/arcane power/increased critical and spell dmg by 3%/30% chance to crit while clearcasting/clearcasting/50% crit dmg bonus increase/bonus 10 spell penetration rating/ignite/bonus 4% chance to crit with scorch and fireblast/improved scorch that gives up to 15% additional fire spell dmg/pyroblast/blastwave/bonus last 2 points in impact for a stun because even with so little points in it it still will proc enough off molten armor to save you when a rogue cheap shots you all the time.
don’t underestimate the ability to aoe entire groups of people in resillience gear down in wsg when 3 rogues and 2 warriors are on your flag carrier with arcanepower/silver crescent trinket/berserking buff/pom flamestrike for 2.5k dmg blastwave 2.5-3k dmg spam arcane explosion 1k-1.4kdmg each. It works, i’ve done it, a lot. Yes the players i’ve killed were geared, one rogue even had warglaives.
I leveled as frost, but switched to fire at around 54 (recently.) I feel as though I’ve hit a wall currently between 52 and 56 (current level.)
Frost is excellent survivability, but they put an aoe cap on blizzard so kiting isn’t as easy as it used to be.
Fire melts single target, but when the mobs catch up to you then you’re done unless you can nova, blink, hope, and pray you get away lol
The aoe cap shouldn’t affect the blizzard ability while leveling that drastically that you should even notice it at all, it only even takes affect beyond 10 mobs being hit, a good mage will be pulling 3-8 mobs max of his own level, sure u could theoretically do more but it’s hard to do out in the open world where mob leashes are so limited and they will just reset if you run too far away and then your health is depleted by the time you gather them all up anyway.
As fire spec that’s why you want spell power and crit chance, so you can hit as hard as possible, because then you don’t gotta worry about the mobs reaching you because they’re dead before they can reach you.
The disparity between full fire and arcane fire is pretty big damage wise. in full s1 gear a full fire mage down to dragon’s breath will be doing 2,7000 dmg fireball crits and 2k dmg dragon breath and 1.8k dmg blastwaves and 1.8k dmg fireblasts and 4k pyroblasts.
Arcane/Fire mages do 3500-4200 dmg fireballs, 2-2.2k dmg blastwaves 2.4-2.7k fireblasts and 4.8-5.4k pyroblasts WITHOUT arcane power/trinket/berserking.
it’s a huge difference in damage output because of the synergy of a few talents, mind mastery(25% of your int converted into bonus spell power which is 550-600 intellect which equates to a bonus 125-150 spellpower) and SpellPower(talent)(increases your critical strike damage bonus of ALL spells by 50%) which is why your fireball hits hard than the mere 10% bonus dmg you get to fireballs with full fire spec. Even frostbolt with ZERO talents in frost crits for 3k-3.2k dmg which is more than fireball does with full fire spec. Arcane is just simply the best burst spec. I tried frost, icelance was only critting for 2k, very bad dmg in my opinion. I haven’t tested an arcane frost build while trying arcane power/icelance and how all those multipliers would work but i imagine you could potentially see some 5k icelance crits if i had to guess. a lot of the pve mages that raid rather than pvp do arcane/frost so they can get icy veins and cold snap to reset icy veins.
Damn, Arcane not that great this expac?
Not until around T6 when they get gear for it. Not sure if its T5 or T6 but one of them has a set bonus that helps.
what are you smokin
whats the dungeon spec for mages
fire?
Fixed that for you to be accurate.
It was frost before and it’ll still be frost now. You have the build with the best survival and least dependence on gear. Slowing/freezing mobs as you murder them makes the game so easy it might get boring. If you want more danger and excitement… then you can go fire.
You are not going arcane until T6.
I am going arcane at 70.
You need to hop on the classic mage discord.
Arcane will pump right from the start.
Also t6?? Like where is your info from??
Arcane is the top dps spec in T5 because of its set bonus so as to why you’re skipping that is beyond me.
