A question for the competent and knowledgeable Mages

I, much like so many others, have been playing WoW, off and on since it dropped waaaaaay back in November of 2004, in all that time, there have been less than 4 classes I’ve not leveled to cap, Mage is one of them, until now. I recently rolled a troll Mage, am now sitting at 45 and was doing the Frost AoE build, it’s…ok, I can see the appeal to solo grinding but I don’t want to speed my way to level cap doing the same thing over and over, I also love running dungeons and questing w/friends when we all have the opportunity to play together. I just ran Mara, was the lowest level (tank druid, feral druid and S.Priest) but was doing the most damage, admittedly many of the times were due to grouped pulls.

My question is, can I not get just as much, or more out of a Fire, or Arcane/Fire build? I read a post by another player on here who seemed to know a bit the class and insisted that Arcane/Fire dps wise was absurdly better. This is the post, it’s a bit dated but…from what he/she is stating…it seems phenomenal!

TL;DR - I’m wondering if there are other viable leveling options other than the age old Frost AoE build, thank you for any help =)

Frost AoE is the fastest by far leveling spec, Blizzard kiting allows you to pull more mobs and kill them safely, you can pretty much only do this with frost while leveling.

Fire is very bursty and has great single target damage.

Arcane isn’t viable for leveling because it’s very mana hungry and you don’t get your main arcane spell, Arcane Blast until you’re level 64. Which means that you’ll be spamming arcane missiles, a channeled spell in the meantime or not even using arcane spells.

Yes, all that I know from what I’ve experienced (at least up to 45) and read. I’m just curious if this is legitimate

  • i got Arcane fire instead at 70, talents points down to mind mastery to get 5/5 25% of int converted into spell power and pyroblast/ignate/blastewave from fire. I have improved manashield/improved dampen magic/bonus intellect/bonus sp from intellect/arcane power/increased critical and spell dmg by 3%/30% chance to crit while clearcasting/clearcasting/50% crit dmg bonus increase/bonus 10 spell penetration rating/ignite/bonus 4% chance to crit with scorch and fireblast/improved scorch that gives up to 15% additional fire spell dmg/pyroblast/blastwave/bonus*

Admittedly, I’d have to first get to 70 but it seems at 60 a lot of people are stating you should respec from Frost anyway…

i leveled a bloodelf mage from 1to60 as arcane under 60hours in tbcc pre-patch by having a group of friends spamming dungeons non stop and all i did was arcane explosion for everything, for 60~70 i stayed as deep arcane with imp frost to use rank1 blizzard if needed, if not arcane explosion is better dps and i had to pick “Slow” deep arcane talent since it works on boss’s (yup it work on those boss’s who can’t be slowed by frost/poison or anything) and that slow talent helped me kite/solo many heroic dungeon boss’s just for lolz & Fun.

if you aim to level as arcane? focus to get best green gear with int each couple of levels, if you’re running dungeon find a paly tank to hold threat against a lot of mobs or a frost mage in group to slow and you can nuke them as arcane. i remember when the frost mages was doing 100~150dps as aoe by blizz for low lvl dungeons my arcane mage was doing 400~500, and in ZF massive pulls i’ve reached +5k dps just with arcane explosion, something a frost mage can never do as lvl 40

frost mages are the best levelers if they’re leveling solo & without organized group, but the true fast leveling group is 3x arcane mages(1with imp blizz) with tank &Healer and they simple spam dungeon.

anyway in wow you can level with any spec, it won’t matter much, just find a person to group with so you don’t have to rely on slowing/kiting while questing and then you’ll enjoy doing dps as you like, and for random dungeons? you don’t need to max to clear the dungeons, just play what you wanna play.
