M+ Feels Less Friend-Friendly This Season

Mythic+ has always been my favorite part of WoW. I’m a decent player, usually hovering around a 3-3.2k IO score. I main a tank and have been on track to do the same this season. But it seems like I’ll have to push without my real-life friends, who I’ve played with for over 15 years, and many of my guildmates are in the same boat.

The challenge level in M+ this season has definitely gone up compared to previous seasons. While I could help carry my friends before—enough to keep us all progressing—this season, that’s no longer the case. It’s not a complete carry, but without my support, they’d struggle to keep up. I can time +10 keys in PUGs by carefully selecting my team, but when I run with friends, we can’t even time +7s together. Maybe when we all have the best gear, I’ll be able to help them push higher, but as of now, even +9s seem out of reach.

For me, progress is what makes WoW fun, but helping my friends now results in a whole night of stalled progression. I’ve had to start pugging, which takes away from playing with the friends I’ve known for so long. The carry potential in this iteration of M+ is drastically reduced. While some carry is possible, the limit is much steeper this time around.

I read a post about M+ feeling less fun, and for me, it’s because of this. No longer can I enjoy pushing keys with my longtime friends or guildies—we’re all splintered off, pugging or running lower keys. Discord is now the only thing keeping us connected; we talk about our separate runs instead of experiencing the excitement of barely timing a key together.

I could continue playing with them and not progress, but none of us find that enjoyable. I’ll keep pushing M+ as long as it’s fun for me, but it’s not the same without my friends at my side.

The problem is that idiotic Afflix that increases Death Penalty up to 15 secs per dead, thats just too severe of an Afflix and it shouldnt be a thing at all.

Some timers are already pretty strict unless youre team is heavily optimized, so even a single wipe is enough to brick a key due to this afflix.

If you enjoy your friends, why aren’t you working with them to master those +7 keys? When I have friends who are behind, I play with them at their level and help them work up.

I am feeling this as well. Ive spent a couple afternoons helping them run low keys for gear and stuff. But they seem hardstuck <+7. Theyre running alts now instead of pushing on mains and its hard because i want to help them but I also have goals of my own and need to split my time between progressing my own toon and helping them.

The more ilvl i have the more i can carry but i cant progress my ilvl at all running with them so i basically just watch them do their key while i wait to get inv in town.

I try to do a couple keys with them when i can but pugging is so time consuming im not really able to.

Everyone was very excited to do keys again this season but im getting a real sense of apathy and frustration from them.

So much this that stupid affix i have no idea why they thought it would be a good idea all it does is now in most pugs 2 wipes and the key is dead so most people just bail the moment it happens

Been playing WoW for many years now without a Friend. Guildless. To me, Guild needs me more than I need them. They need my carry and they cant carry me.

It’s just I became a Casual and I have no pattern on when I could go Online. I would just play whenever I have a free time. I cant participate on any scheduled meetings when with Guild.

And I felt bad on M+. It’s becoz most players cant cope up with the current difficulty. Need to be lucky to find tough players… especially tough healers.

I think DF S4 made people forget M+ is not easy content.

S1 has been out for a bit over 2 weeks if I remember correctly. Unless they were key pushers, most people are not at the skill or gear level of easily timing +10s yet.

I really can’t rant about this moronic affix enough. Who decided that deaths need to be quadrupled down on?

If you wipe now you receive:
Mob/boss HP reset.
Cooldowns likely still on CD (especially screwed if you wiped with lust).
25 seconds subtracted from the timer.
A long walk back.

And now for some reason the dev team decided you should lose another 50 seconds off your timer on top of all of that?

This can happen for any stupid reasons with current tuning like your tank missed a single tank buster in a 3 minute tyrannical fight or someone disconnecting for 3 seconds. And bam your key is now bricked.

It seems the OP is saying that running +15s or +20s pre-squish was possible and running +7s or higher post-squish is not possible for the skill level his friends have. You can teach them what to do (knowledge), but if they can’t execute it (skill) then they will fail anyways. To “master those +7 keys” requires both knowledge, coordination (voice-chat), and SKILL for many players.

Then there are the born-gamers that can pug +10s with no comms, but I think those are the top 10% (likely mythic raiders playing with other mythic raiders), but that’s doesn’t sound like the OPs friends.

Yeah kinda same situation here. Im running with 3 of the 5 completely new to modern wow and m+ but i just kinda took a step back and been bringing them along trying to teach them as we go. Definitely a slow burn but im not hell bent on ksm or anything this go. Just trying to enjoy it with the homies. It’s been fun. When i pug though it’s heavy lifting at times :joy::joy:

Because it takes a lot of time to help people push past those things and, like the OP stated, people really like knowing they progressed when they logged in. Helping others learn is great but its not something that can be focused on when your own goals havent been met or even for an entire night because it can feel wasted.

For example, I almost exclusively play games that give me something to grind for. Without a grind, I realize that my time feels wasted. Having something directly to work for is a big part of the point of mythic+

RIGHT. I wouldnt be as upset about the squish if we spawned right at the boss. The intense silence after a wipe on the walk back for a simple, unforgiving mechanic, is awful.

Made that run back to the second boss in batol 6 times before the group called it lmao. After 2 i felt uncomfortable and no one said a word :joy:

Vortimer summarized precisely.

Why do people constantly lie about their experience in these opening posts? You got 3k once in DF S3.

If you are looking to push higher keys I run quite a few keys weekly. Let me know and I’ll give you my b-net tag

This was the last time I played and last known IO and you very well know there is IO inflation, 3k didn’t even exist in s2 or s1 for the decent average joe player such as myself, that was reserved for the top .5% or whatever, now its like 3.8k for that, so not sure I follow what your getting at. I ran my first 10 and successfully timed it at 611.3 equipped ilvl, I think that’s decent, but you know, cause you’ve cleared them at 614, edit - my bad you are hard stuck on 9s still.

It’s week 3 and I spent all of week 2 spamming for trinkets. I’m not hard stuck and far from it. You are trying to boost your own ego by comparing your runs on week 3 when historically I have been consistently running +20 and up. Funny.

It’s all good buddy, your decent too, would love your take on the M+ discussion though rather than personal attacks. What are your honest thoughts on M+ this season compared to seasons past?

I’ll just quote myself on this one, but I will add that 20+% have already reached KSM where historically only 30-35% get it at the end of a 6-8 month season. This should tell you that the scaling isn’t as hard as you think it is.
