LGBTQ+ Megathread & Lounge (Part 3)

More like an hour and half wait time

I wish our government here stop screwing things up. Like, years ago, when they decided to go with the National Broadband Network, the government wanted our internet speeds to be at the same speed as most other nations, but we’re still got some of the slowest internet speeds behind the world. And it didn’t help much there is bans here in Australia stopping from other countries helping out Australia with internet speeds as well.

Oh, according to this site:

Australia has some of the slowest and most expensive internet speeds in the developed world. According to the Speedtest Global Index, Australia ranked 60th worldwide for average download speeds in October 2023, with an average speed of 57.9 Mbps. This is significantly slower than the global average of 97.5 Mbps and behind many other developed countries, such as Singapore (220.0 Mbps), South Korea (178.7 Mbps), and New Zealand (119.7 Mbps).

Australia also has some of the highest internet prices in the developed world. According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the average monthly cost of a broadband plan in Australia is $70. This is significantly higher than the global average of $48.60 and behind many other developed countries, such as New Zealand ($56.50), the United Kingdom ($52.20), and the United States ($50.60).

Blights me it’s called a Throbber… I didn’t know that class of icons had a name… reading that description in the mood I’m in was interesting.

Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

Yes I absolutely knew I needed the Wikipedia link to help explain myself!!

I’m glad my ocd for definitive naming could aid in bringing you levity.

Sometimes my inner rainman helps. Sometimes.

YES! That’s the one!

was neat, although a bit frustrating at missing steps like “Lets make sure the nation’s food supply is less cruel” “Your country is now vegan!”

Good call :grimacing:

I’m usually fine with violent fantasy stuff or the violent action movie stuff, but the violent modern period TV series stuff like the boys/American gods was a bit off putting for me. Feels like they’re trying to outdo each other and it gets really wooow.

If it wasn’t so sad, it’s funny that some politicians were using basically word for word arguments from a previous infrastructure upgrade (iron cables or something?) prior to copper to argue about upgrading to fibre.

I’m not hugely either politically or tech savvy, but from what I gather, the lnp were doing their usual dumb stuff trying to sabotage the alp and the country, but then got the reins and just went “welp, guess now we can really screw em” and did more dumb stuff. And that’s why our internet is worse than like some small war torn country in africa or something.

Then there’s the whole mess with selling all our natural resources (or the rights to mine them and sell them to other countries) to that lady who got upset about the portrait a few weeks ago.

I’ve heard about some countries that tax the crap out of mining so the country isn’t just shooting itself in the foot for a quick buck, but unfortunately Australia is very keen to sell itself off for a dollar today rather than make more in the future.

Ugh.

I’m in regional Australia and can only get fixed wireless Internet from a tower in a cow paddock down the road. The maximum speed is 25 Mbit, what’s worse is that new housing estates around here get way faster fibre to the node connections.
