That tends to be the reason why it turns ugly rather fast. I think people convince themselves that they should get to have their own cis/white/whatever group because it’s “only equal” to be held to the same standard. (Following their logic) When all you have to do is take a few steps back and realize that people in general are never that consistent. The reality is people are never universally held to the same standard. That’s why we have 30 threads worth of people complaining about non existent barbershop pronouns. Any time there’s something that caters to a marginalized group, there is always push back. Always.
Idk, more and more are starting to support it. Maybe they’re realizing that the factions have actively hurt their favorite race than help. Team N’zoth though. Alliance and Horde can burn
Like I said earlier, I think it’s more that it’s not an actual desire to have a space like that, just a cheap tool used to try and deny others a space of their own. This thread had a reason to exist that was based on talking about things in game (and in general) that were relevant to the group in here. Those threads are just there to try and score some point against others and not because there’s anything there to discuss.
I dunno where I stand with it anymore, but I like having the expansions have multiple stories in it. Like get rid of the war and horrible acts section of BFA and it was nice that you had the two separate islands for each faction with stories that didn’t really need the backdrop of the war. I’d love if they could keep up with something like that without getting too stupid with the faction clashes. And I can easily see them dropping into something like Legion where one side dominated the plot if they got rid of the faction line.
I think bfa had some of the best storytelling we’ve ever gotten if you ignore the faction war (and also the n’zoth ending but that’s seperate)
Even though I mained horde, I really felt like the Alliance story was special. There was something that really tugged on my heart strings seeing Jaina recap with her mom. I distinctly remember I teared up when Katherine went to that dark place and got to experience Jaina’s trauma. It hits a little close to home.
I didn’t feel the same way about the Horde campaign with how sus the Horde is in general. But we did have vulpera so that just makes it better by default.
I liked the Horde campaign in general. Would have been nicer if we didn’t completely fail at stopping the 3rd party evil threats in EVERY zone. But I felt like it was a good Horde story, and would have been perfect if it wasn’t packaged inside completely destroying the horde that those quests represented.
BfA had good pockets of storytelling, but the overall arc was unimpactful because it wasn’t player driven.
Shadowlands took the worst parts of BfA and made it worse by forcing you to experience it. It’s also not nice that the story is being driven by a character a lot of people dislike, and how much existing lore it had to retcon.
I typed a gigantic wall of text trying to rationalize my understanding of the story, but I felt like it went on too long and rambled on a bit. Also, i didn’t want to be disproportionately negative for the sake of it.
To surmise, the writing team are competent and they definitely have the talent. But for some unknown reason the Sylvanas thing in particular is… well, you know.
I plan on seeing this through to the end, I’ve already invested so much of my attention into the story already, but I also do not think that the payoff will be worth it.
For the simple fact that for a period of at least two years, I felt like literal human garbage being an undead death knight.
Seriously, I would not be surprised if that whole mess ends up being some stupid petty BS writer clash of egos.
I’d prefer Shadowlands a lot more if we got to explore the origins of the Eternal One’s (or at least get some build up towards it as we get into 9.2), and also spend more time the main 4 and learn their motivations, feelings, etc…
Fact is that I just don’t care if the story itself is not giving me a reason to care.
I was going through depression at the time of bfa, and weirdly enough I was able to connect with the crippling nihilism aspect along with he old god delerium stuff going on.
It was literally the worst time in my life, and yet the only thing that kept me afloat at the same time.
Shadowlands is just meh to me. I thought it would be cool to adopt the Jailer’s side and go against reality.
Like you know how they say when life gives you lemons you make lemonade?
Well, if you’re like Sylvanas or Zovaal, then your outlook goes more like
“If life gives you lemons, you destroy reality and make a universe without lemons”.
And I know it sounds funny putting it like that but I really do think there’s something empowering about that.
But it looks like none of that will come to pass, sylv was just a pawn, the Jailer is bad, and there’s no nuance within any of that. I hope I am wrong though.
I just wish there was a covenant that spoke more to the kalimdor horde, give Bwom more than a dungeon tied into the heavily Nelf centric group, or draw on Tauren and Orc afterlife things.
Go to the Against Patriarchy conference and get uninvited…
This so much this.
I just can’t stand all the “4d chess” of shadowlands. Zovaal was expecting SO MANY THINGS to go right that it’s just silly
It would’ve made more sense if they gave him a power that actually explained why things go the way he needed them to. For example, N’zoth had the power to see into all possible futures and this was inevitably how he was able to be so close to victory.
Zovaal is supposed to be an ancient being who dabbled into forbidden arts and magic, he should’ve had better powers than being able to put bdsm chains on people and have a personality duller than a rock.
Rocks at least have a purpose.
They rushed their world building in the literal realm of death with infinite destinations tailored for souls. Absolutely shameful.
They couldn’t even be bothered to utilize their island expedition system to further branch out the Shadowlands.
It just sucks because all the not jailer / sylv related stories are actually fun. The npcs as well.
Its just such a waste
The biggest question I have is why the actual hell the writing team is so insistent on the cosmic plotline. One of the most glaring weak points the WoW writing team has always had is world building. And yet they insist on ascending the player into a cosmic war.
