Layer Hopping now has Internal Cooldown

Don’t fight the hypo.

What if the “concurrency” is 3,300. Are you putting 3,000 in one layer and 300 in another. Are you splitting them in two aprox. equal groups?

You will be on a server with the same amount of players as you were in vanilla. It will feel the same no matter how much you want it not to.

In the stress test they’re dialing that number way lower because those 3000 players (just to use that random number) are all in 1 or 2 zones. A layer might encompass the entire continent, but early on the players are all congested. I would imagine as time goes by and players spread out, Blizz will increase the number of players per layers, which means less layers. Until they feel comfortable with how congested the areas are.

By the way, this is the metric that I fear they’ll go overboard with. “Players have too much quest competition. People can’t run around and solo all the quests!!”

This fix will probably be good enough until the tourists leave and they merge all the layers.

Ion actually mentioned in an interview that this is what they would be doing.

Your response to “layering is as game breaking as CRZ” was that retail is a successful MMO. By extension, since retail is a successful MMO according to you, every feature in retail is fine because of retail’s success. Logic.

You are missing the concern. People want to be on a static server with the same people. The number is less important.

The server is static though. The same people will be on that server. The only difference is layers will make them invisible physically. But not verbally.

Has Blizzard stated the total number of players they’re capping each server at? I certainly haven’t seen it.

They will be in a matter of weeks, when it matters.

The layers aren’t.

We just disagree on what matters.

Which is a bad thing, since WoW has been one of the most solo-friendly MMOs to date, and was the most solo-friendly MMO when it released.

MMORPG doesn’t mean “YOU MUST GROUP WITH SOMEONE ALL THE TIME.”

Exactly what abuses are you trying to curtail using your system above?

Something not unlike the Resurrection (timeout) mechanic would likely work fairly well in this case, just start at a higher increment on it(“You will be able to ressurect in 30 seconds”).

Anybody trying to farm a specific node, at the specific location they’re standing on, is going to find that 30+ second to couple minutes worth of forced “timeout” to make that approach rather non-viable in short order. They’d be further ahead to just run around and farming nodes the old fashioned way instead.

Yes, the pvp aspect “is a concern” but that one is an entirely different matter that is then trying to be handled, and the anti-layering crowd is pretty much correct that the only way to truly fix that is to not have layers in the first place.

Which puts us back to “the layering issue being addressed is PVE in nature” and focused around preventing people from looting multiple Arena chests in STV in the course of a couple minutes, or picking Purple Lotus flowers/mining thorium veins from the same location on multiple layers, before moving to the next node to repeat the process again. An issue which can be easily solved by placing them in a “time out” period that lasts only a couple minutes. Because at that point the time to reward ratio hits the proverbial floor pretty quick.

That’s a big difference. Someone compared it to CRZ, and they’re not the same thing…but the effect is similar. You see people that you might see at some future time, but you might not (until layering is removed). It’s also similar to sharding or phasing when people you would otherwise be interacting with are stuck on a different layer and you don’t see them. This is not an ideal way to make new friends. It’s bad for creating new communities.

Because it’s just a rumor at this point, and more testing will be needed to ensure it would actually resolve the exploits. If true, it is promising, though.

Your stance only supports the notion that catering to this mentality with layering is the wrong approach. Players should absolutely feel compelled to group in a well designed mmorpg. Especially at launch.

They already have instanced pvp, its called a pvp realm. Unless u want warmode which is just sooooooooo perfect…

No.

A MMORPG is a living world that the residents are constantly changing, giving you the OPPORTUNITY to play with many different people.

The only things a MMORPG should require you (or compel you) to group for is PvP, dungeons, and raids. There must also be soloable content. That is part of why WoW was so successful compared to its predecessors, and is part of nearly every modern MMO now.

I actually made a Rick and Morty meme that had Rick saying “Layering in Classic WoW? That just sounds like CRZ, but with extra steps!” XD

You are not wrong, but this is just what we have to deal with. Those that can’t deal with it can show protest by not playing the game. Will just make the layering go away faster.
