And you’ll see a ton of folks breaking the political chat rules in Trade chat. It’s honestly frustrating. Doing my best to report these folks but 1. it doesn’t seem to be enough despite spreading the word that political talk is reportable and 2. the ignores “clear” whenever I switch characters.
I don’t think I should have to leave Trade, because sometimes useful stuff does come out of there, and I feel like the rulebreakers should be the ones not welcome there, not the ones playing nicely.
Just had to vent slightly, sorry. It would be cool if something were done though.
There are no GM staff that monitor the forums, it’s mainly player discussion with some extra moderation. You would need to right click and report in game, which should also block those reported until the next time you log in.
All you can do is report the offending chat messages and move along as engaging with them could also get yourself in hot water. When you report them you won’t see anymore from that individual until you log out or change to another toon. Also if it gets too annoying you can also turn off the chat window. Also I wouldn’t be suggesting in the chat channels that people report those doing the wrong thing as that could also get you in trouble.
Just as an aside - be careful of how you do this. If you’re specifically telling folks to report someone by name? Unfortunately, it opens you up to reports for harassment. And I’ve seen people who have been sanctioned for trying to direct folks to report other people - no matter the reasoning why. That kind of thing ties into the headache of “mass reporting.”
And too, if you’re switching characters to try and report them again on another alt? Your reports only count as one, not someone using all their characters to try and garner a quicker squelch on a player who is breaking the rules.
While if enough unique accounts report a player, it can squelch the troublemaker’s account, we don’t know what exactly that metric is. But even though the ban hammer doesn’t just immediately crash down - folks who have been reported and are breaking the rules, the reports do catch up with them. It just takes a little time for the GMs who handle investigations and such to do their thing.
Yup. Also while you’re noticing trade chat being bad, you should also note services chat is full of ban evading throwaway accounts of RMT boosters there. Level 10s saying gold only for heroic/mythic runs, but if you ask them for their discord it’s one for an RMT boosting website that’s full of cross realm boosters AND half their “management team” also sits in a gold selling discord.
There’s a meme someone made that I saw recently that fully explains this…
Accent marks on new toons to pretend they weren’t sanctioned recently really is a thing it seems, lol.
I used to report as many Trade run-sellers on level 1-10 alts posting to Trade Services as I could on my bank alt when I passed through, but I was spending so much time doing it and they were so pervasive I finally just gave up and turned off Trade Services instead.
It’s bat country there, now, but at least by banishing them there they don’t usually spill over out of their containment zone.
It would be if it’s taking place in Trade Chat though which is what OP said. I know a lot of people tend to use it as a game wide catch all channel but it’s technically only for selling and buying goods.
Just going to requote an old quote from Vrakthris, and I think the same thing actually still applies today:
Basically, yes, some channels does have some rules in regards to in-game advertising as far as I remember, how ever, there isn’t really any rules in regards to having discussions within a such channel, even if the discussion is about politics, as far as I can translate with Vrak’s quote. Of course their is rules in regards to communication, but the rules is basically not being vulgar, or using profanity, etc.
You report and move on. Chat that breaks ToS in Trade is just as valid as anywhere else
Although if Trade is getting to you to this point it may be better to leave unless you do want to trade or something.
I use Trade for two things: Chat with other players sometimes during DPS queues and posting crafting orders. I’m not sure what ‘good stuff’ you’re looking for but you aren’t very likely to find it in what is basically a social moshpit.
As an aside, think politic talk is fine, being rude and insulting over it, which usually happens, is not.
“I suggest you follow the time tested rule and leave political, sexual and religious topics out of our game - which is mixed company, among strangers.”

None of this is very hard, folks. These aren’t ‘discussions’ being done in Trade, they are bait games to increase toxicity for the amusement of the trollish bored. Frankly, it don’t belong on Azeroth. It often leads responders to get so worked up, they cuss in anger and frustratiuon, further breaking ToS and getting themselves actioned (maybe that’s part of the point of the poitical bait). It’s bad for the game and chat. I report it, Blizz can decide.
People doing this should just right click and report them for spam. if it is permissible nothing will happen. Report and let blizzard sort it out. Yes they are looking to get a rise out of someone. So saying reported in chat at best will do nothing and at worst will get you a stalker.
I just ignore trade chat and go to Darkshire when that stuff starts and I’m tired of seeing it. Here’s the thing - I didn’t know it was against ToS, and honestly, it shouldn’t be. Half the reason we’re all in this mess is because we locked ourselves inside of echo chambers. Most of the time, I don’t mind seeing people having a discussion outside of their echo chambers, even if it’s getting weird and spicy.
I shouldn’t have to ignore trade chat, though. If I did that I wouldn’t have gotten 8k gold the other day because someone decide to host a public game with prizes. It’s the political trolls who should leave, as they don’t belong in trade. They have 4chan and stuff they can go to.
If you feel someone is breaking the rules, you should report them. There isn’t much else to be said as this is starting to become a GD thread. Nothing more can be done here as this is an information desk.
