Is WoW out of touch with it's core audience?

How did we kill the Lich King if it was Tirion Fordring who shattered the blade and delivered the final blow. The game should revolve are lore characters that actually exist and not some background characters that observe the world and watch the lore progress. We do not actually exist in the world and are just people playing a game and experiencing the lore via a monthly subscription cost.

It’s because you don’t exist in the world.

I disagree completely and only a hand full of people like being a champion, that’s why you’re in the extreme minority of people who have commented on this post. The truth is we don’t like having our feet kissed and worshipped like some god in a video game where we escape reality to just unwind and relax and be immersed in a game and not have it broken by constantly having talking heads pop up when doing world quests or being told you’re the chosen one constantly, its a boring broken used up trope and people are tired of it.

The logical extension of this, considering all of our past “accomplishements”, is that by now we’d be the faction leaders for our respective sides and would essentially never leave Stormwind/Orgrimmar. Because we would be directing the actions of all of the subordinates doing the actual leading/fighting. By now the only activity any of our characters should be engaging in, would be mission table type content. With the occasional leaving of the faction capital to lead a raid team on the last boss of the expansion…

Which is why, way back when, I decided not to become a manager and to stay an individual contributor/contractor in my career.

Easy, people that love to grief/be griefed.

Classic WoW is fun and funny. Corpse camping is hilarious. The thrill of the hunt and the hunted. The world felt like a world because you could not fly past everything in a minute.

I really do feel like flying ruined the game and removed pvp from the equation of the world = dangerous. Now we no longer have pvp servers because no one can pvp outside of camping where people zone in so now you opt into world pvp via “war mode” but it’s not the same thing as questing and at any moment someone could attack you much like real life, everyone want’s a safe space which is completely an unrealistic expectation, but here we are, a neutered game.

Except… The majority of people on the WoW forum are a very select minority? TF? You think the WoW forums actually reflect the view of a huge portion of the WoW community? You can turn a blind eye all you want if you choose to hold onto that, but our characters have existed in the world since Wrath. One man taking down Arthas? Lul. Were you even there during the fight or have you just been farming for invincible and didn’t actually do ICC when it was current?

We did all the fighting while Tirion was frozen. Arthas, trained us up. Individually mind you, you know he appears to you in quests throughout Northrend and adresses you personally, because he knew you weren’t some random loser. Arthas established our characters in that moment.

Other examples include, but not limited to:

  1. Grom, telling Gul’Dan that he’s seen us in battle and that Gul’Dan will lose against our player characters and basically that he will be reveling in the fact that we will ultimately kill Gul’Dan.

  2. In the story (since it’s unlikely you’ve read it or listened to it) Tomb of Sargeras. Gul’Dan is given power by Kil’Jaeden to undo the wards, and open a portal at the tomb. Gul’Dan getting a major power boost tells Kil’Jaeden to shove off, because he found out what happened to the first Gul’Dan, being betrayed by the Legion the first time. After cutting off the connection with Kil’Jaeden Gul’Dan started to remember that even if he killed Khadgar, there were others (the player characters) the ones who toppled Archimonde and invaded the Hellfire Citadel.

You can keep saying that our characters don’t exist in WoW lore but they are quite established at this point. The funny… yet kinda sad and I feel sorry for you is that this is something that means a lot to you for some reason, and you refuse to give it up when, at this point there’s no going back and it’s highly unlikely Blizzard is going to go back. Our character is already being established in Shadowlands as an anomally already. There’s even a line in the intro scenario where the teleportation rune to Oribos reacts to us, they players and not Jaina, Anduin or Thrall.

The jailer takes note of this as well.

Try as you might but, the story is unlikely to go back to our PC having no presence at all, and I’m perfectly happy with that.

Just because the people working at blizzard writes fanfiction doesn’t mean any of it’s cannon. At any moment all this could be erased by time travel tropes.

Except it means exactly that. Listen, I get it. You want to be a loser nobody in the game so you can express yourself. You want to relate to your character, and I totally get that. At the same time, you’ll never be a god in real life so why not play one in a game?

It’s the same thing as people wanting to play super ugly characters, which in general most of the time tend to be people who are really ugly in real life as well. They don’t feel represented enough I guess or something.

What kind of egotistical person would want to be a god? I just want to experience a living world. I’m sorry you feel like a loser in real life and want to feel like someone important in a video game, I truly do feel sorry for you. :frowning: Life will get better and it can’t rain all the time. Just keep your chin up and keep moving forward!

Yeah, and I suck at classic but I love it. Blizzard thinks people only want a game they can breeze through but we all love a challenge.
Hell even without a challenge there is fun to be had in classic. Escaping a camper is such an epic feeling that cant be replicated in current retail because flying mounts and OP items. Blizzard designed retail to make you feel like a god.

Classic was more grounded and you were asked to do mundane tasks but you couldnt solo an entire city camping it without a group.

Say what you will but the fact of the matter is that this is the direction WoW has been heading since Wrath, and you’re in a minority. I asked people in trade chat what they thought and they thought people like you were crazy. Even still, that’s a small portion of the community, but it’s likely to echo throughout the game. There are games out there where you can be a good for nothing loser nobody that has no name. WoW is not that game, hasn’t been that game for 12 years and it’s unlikely to return.

I’d take your losses and either adapt or find a new game. /shrug. If it really makes you that unhappy then I have no idea why you’re even here.

Exactly this, classic feels much better and far superior. With minor QoL improvements the retail game could be truly fun again. They’re slowly taking steps to make the game more like classic with bringing back weapon oils and sharpening stones along with armor patches.

I want the game to be fun and challenging at all levels instead of a boring turn your brain off and face roll gameplay that Diablo 3 and retail has given us. The world should feel dangerous because it is and not because you get a debuff and too many stacks of that debuff and you get one shot, it’s not fun and doesn’t feel threatening.

Being a god in a mmo is really dumb and like I said before a super boring trope. I made a post forever ago predicting that classic would do far better than retail and that we’d start seeing mechanics from the vanilla game be reintroduced to the live version.

Looks like I was right all along and the people trying to argue with me are just in denial.

Yeah… Classic tends to be filled with you lot of masochistic people who have a weird sense of fun. Even if you got rid of flying in EK and Kalimdor, the leveling experience is pretty much dominated by pushing dungeons due to LFD. So seeing people actually out and questing isn’t likely to change. The leveling experience might change that though come level squish so we’ll see.

Now that you mention it though I did think about leveling a class to 60 just so I could gank people and dispel world buffs when Naxx comes out, cause that’s a pretty nasty walk from LHC to the Ziggurat.

in FFXIV you are the Warrior of Light, the hero

Its sad to see this type of thread be posted every expansion. Of course the developers are out of touch. But with Shadowlands they show some reconnection. Not totally redeeming connection but a little bit

Yeah but FF lore isn’t taken very seriously and is far less established than warcraft lore. Less established means that… Sure you’re like this paragon of power… But no one really cares about the lore.

He doesn’t mean it in a mechanical sense. He wants to play as McLoser the Nobody from Loserville. It’s like this guy has never played DND before.

You clearly dont play FFXIV.

The more I think about who the core audience Blizz is catering to the more I realize the answer is: themselves. PvP is a perfect example. Ion doesn’t like it, so that’s why we’ve had two xpacs in a row without a new BG. No dev time is being spent on PvP. I don’t think there’s even a PvP dev anymore.

Do you have proof of him talking about not liking pvp? I hate how we don’t get new BG’s or even reasons to do BG’s anymore. I used to like going to BG’s with new weapons or gear to see how hard I hit but now everything feels like it’s covered in NERF foam and your attacks feel like they do next to nothing. I miss when doing BG’s was fun but it’s been tuned to the point of an e-sport where no one has an advantage outside of those few classes that perform the best.

It honestly feels like that. One shotting people in arena’s with TD or IS feels extremely bad. You don’t even have control over it like say a strong weapon or trinket you activate. I miss when the game had some challenge for pvp but in arena’s healer’s are basically like mana batteries that constantly recharge and never go oom.

I hope arena’s are fun in shadowlands because it’s been so boring as of late.
