Is Shadowlands even worth being called an expansion?

Haven’t preordered since WoD screwed me. Got the mounts during a forum giveaway when they were having a sale. Never bought one myself.

Thanks for proving my point, I used to have confidence in Blizzard. I no longer do.

The main thrust of Shadowlands seems to be rejigging the games mechanics to bring back older systems (talent points, a greater emphasis on class rather then spec, greater levels of control over crafting) while polishing the ones that they have (giving us more control over the outcome of weekly chests) and hopefully mothballing some things which have kind of overstayed there welcome (AP and mission tables).

As such, I’m pretty ok with not getting a new class or race to play around with at launch as long as the rest of the systems work well.

The issue with Necromancer is that there isn’t really any way to distinguish it from DK or Warlock since both of those classes fit the archetype already.

Who cares? Just make them spawn undead, give them lich form and decaying death magic.

Or make like warden class, that’s new and unique.
Or make battlemages, which combine melee with magic.

So many options for classes.

Bard, tinker, the list goes on.

Let’s see…

Remaking how the classes work and not spec based? Yep

Pushing in multiple forms of new customizations and graphic features for current races? Yep

Adding new mechanics based on customizing and enhancing your class and its skills? Yep

Sounds like an Expansion to me…

  1. How is this different from warlock again? Aside from it being undead instead of demons?
  2. Ok, you’ve mentioned a class, now what exactly is it and how is it not just a reskin of an existing class?
  3. You have this. It’s called an enhance shaman.

Its not like its any different from Warlords of Draenor. Its a filler expansion first and foremost. Its trying to rememdy a number of problems while offering nothing new to the game’s life. The trouble comes in with a lack of creative options.

Shadowlands is boasting the following systems:

  • New Character Customizaiton
  • A Covenant System that acts as secondary progression. (A non-equipped Artifact/Heart of Azeroth
  • Level Squish & Levelling experience from 1-60
  • RNG Dungeon Delve

We’re really not getting a lot in Shadowlands that can change as the patch cycles continue. Yet I’m holding not a breath for this as this expansion just doesn’t capture the same lure as others have. We’re going outside of Azeroth again, to a realm that places WAAAAY too much conflict about the afterlife of Azeroth’s universe.

Shadowlands is also following Failure for Azeroth. We all have a right to be warily upset about how few changes are coming to shake things up.

See, now bard is a class I could see making for an interesting class that doesn’t just rehash what someone else was; you could easily do a thing where you have a lot of AOE effects that are empowered by powers you activate in a rhythm.

DK suck, i do think monks are cool (panda land xpac sucked) and DH suck. maybe that is why those xpac are good they add bad classes for all the cry babies to jump on and press 3 buttons to be OP

Horde got Paladin, Alliance got Shaman.
Each faction got a new class /shrug

Legion was a crap expansion, it only had a lot of things to do, but it was crap anyway, feels better because came after wod and anything could be good after that

good expansion with good new playable races

shadowlands will be more or less like wod, with no races and class, and will feel like a filler

hope i am wrong, but with recent years i will be skeptical

cata was worse then wod

Probably not. Then again, you and anyone else who thinks that are wrong.

There are new systems.

All northrend was was some new place branching off from wc3. All WoD was was some place branching off from MoP. So I don’t see how you can make that argument. Yes, expacs relate to the game world and/or story in some way.

People like different things about the game, but to me theres several red flags about shadowlands. We lose levels and leveling is overhauled as the big feature. Well I dont care about leveling, losing levels alone doesnt bother me but it will cause tons of problems. Story, well you can make it interesting without destroying the aura of the lich king. Making him a bumbling fool that couldnt win with an entire army was poorly done to say the least.

We know next to nothing about Shadowlands, so I don’t think people can give a fair assessment either way. I will admit to being very nervous though considering Blizzard’s decisions as of late.

I’d rather have no new classes, and give us old abilities back. The more classes they add into the game, the more balancing is required. Just focus on fixing the classes we have now

To be fair, Cata did give us new race / class combos on top of giving us Worgen and Goblins.

Below is a list of all the new race / class combos that came with Cata
Tauren Paladins
Tauren Priests
Night elf Mages
Blood elf Warriors (I am not joking)
Human hunters (again, not joking)
Undead hunters (still not joking)
Troll warlocks
Troll Druids
Dwarf Warlocks
Dwarf Mages
Dwarf Shamans
Gnome priests
Orc Mage

And Shadowlands is allowing Pandaren and Allied races the option to be Death Knights.

If shadowlands is like Cata or WoD it is going to be recognized as a filler expansion.

But the clock is ticking because right now I am seeing shadowlands as not ambitious enough given the scant info.

I don’t think i’ve seen anyone refer to Cata as a filler expansion. WoD basically was as blizzard wanted it to be a year long expansion (they failed), gave up on it half way through and all it served was a way to kill off Garrosh and sent an AU version of Gul’daddy to Azeroth. While also putting Archimonde into a box and saying he is dead, but alive at the same time. Due to the whole Mythic ending vs cinematic ending debate.
